Description
De@ 31, 19735 J. J. Lasci-1ER COMMERCIAL PACKAGE Filed Feb. 27, 1935 I INVENToR john Jfllescher' man;
ATTORNEYS WITNESSES Patented Dec. 31, i 1935 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE COIVIMERCIAL PACKAGE A 'John J. Lescher, New York, N. Y.; assigner to Blythe Johnson, New York, N. Y.
Application February 21, 1935, Serial No. 8,539
2 Claims.
. an improved cigarette package.
' illustrated as being applied to alcommerial pack- It is an object of this invention to provide an improved package which may be conveniently opened without any difficulty whatsoever and without destroying the body portion of the package which continues tolserve as a protection for the contents of the package.
A further object is the provision of an improved package opening at the-top and so constructed that the whole top or only a portion of the top may be readily removed without mutilating the body portion of the package, but after the top has thus been removed it can not be replaced, thereby preventing fradulent filling 'of the package or a removal or substitution of thev contents without the knowledge of the purchaser.
With these and other objects in view, reference should be had to the accompanying drawing, in which:
Fig. 1 is a perspective view of a cigarette package embodying features of the present invention;
Fig. 2 is a view 'similar to Fig. 1with a portion of the top removed;
Fig. 3 is a perspective view of the portion of the top which has been removed from the package in Fig. 2; u
Fig. 4 is asectional View in the direction of the arrows on the line 4-4 in Fig. 1; and
' Fig. 5 is a plan view of a blank provided .with
`suitable folding lines and-weakened lines which may be used in 'making the package shown in Figs. 1 through gi. e
In the'accompanymg drawing, theinvention is age vfor cigarettes, to which my invention has particular application. However, it is to be under y construction, being formed of a blank I preferably composedfofftw'o layers, an outer layer of foil I I and an inner layer of paper I2.v The blank.I
is provided with vertical fold lines I3, horizontal fold lines I4 adjacent the top and bottom, and
with diagonally disposed fold lines I5 at the two front, back and oneside of the pack- A generally loop-shaped severed line 25 demarking the handle `tab 26 communicates with the weakened line 20 and extends across the remaining side of the package. Another weakened or perforated line extends across the top of they package andcommunicates with the weakened line 20 at a point on each side .of the package. This weakened line is preferably disposed nearer the side of the package where the tab 26 is formed, and in the package illustrated inthe accompanying drawing the last mentioned Weakened line is made up of the two perforated lines 2| extending from the line 20 tothe edge of the blank, each of the lines 2| being spaced an equal distance from the horizontally disposed fold lines I3 at the side of the package. i
When the blank I0 is folded along the vertical, horizontal and diagonal fold lines to provide a package as shown in Fig. l of the drawing, it will be seen that the perforated line extends substantially -the entire distance around the top of the package,'while the severed line 25 extends the remaining distance providing a handle tab 26 at one side of the. package and integral with the top. The second perforated line 2| will then extend across the top of the package connecting two points on the flrst perforated line. A paper label 22 is then preferably secured around the outside of the package and a seal or revenue stamp A23 may be glued over the topl of the package. The label 22 is preferably provided with a cut-out portion 24 on the side where the tab 26 is provided, so as to facilitate both the opening of the package vand the removal of cigarettes after the package has been opened.v The tab 26 may be disposed inside of the outer wrapping label 22 as shown or, if desired, the tab may be permitted to extend outside of thelabell 22 so '-f-that it may be more conveniently'positioned for opening the package.
To open the package the tab 26 is grasped between the thumb and tforenger and raised upwardly, severing the top from the package along the perforated line 2|). By guiding the direction of the tear with the other hand the top may be completely'removed by permitting the tearing to continue along theline 20 while only a portion of the top may be removed by directing the direction of force along the weakened line 2|.
When the top or a portion thereof has been removed, as shown in"Fi'g. 2, due to the cut-out portion 24, it will be seen that the cigarettes "inside-of the package may be readily removed,
which may be conveniently opened without mutilating or destroying the body of the package itself, and which can not be resealed without detection by the purchaser.
It is to be understood that modifications may be made in the illustrated and described embodiment of the invention, such as forming the cut-out portion 24 in the outer label so as to conform with the tab 26 at the side of the package.
I claim:
l. A commercial package for cigarettes including side, bottom and top portions, said package being provided with a weakened line extending almost completely around the top of the package, a severed line extending the remaining distance around the top, and a weakened line extending across the top of the package and connecting two points on the rst mentioned weakened line, said severed line being formed so as to provide a handle tab integral with the top of the package.
2. A commercial package for cigarettes including front, rear, side, top and bottom portions, a weakened line extending around the front, rear and one side of said package adjacent the top, a generally U-shaped severed line formed in the other side portion of the package and communieating at its two ends with the weakened line, 10
and a second weakened line extending across the A top of the package and connecting two points on the first mentioned weakened line, said severed line being formed so as to provide a downwardly depending handle tab at the side of the package 15 integral with the top.
