10 Claims. (01. 271-) This invention relates in general to mechanism for delivering folded products out from a web to conveying mechanism, having for its object, the provision of means adapting the mechanism to be conveniently adjusted for delivering products of various thicknesses.
It is a particular object of the invention to provide a single manually-operable means for adjusting all the fan blades of a printing machine delivery mechanism to handle sheet products of various thicknesses.
It is also an object of the invention to provide a mechanism for delivering products to conveying mechanism, of generally improved construction, whereby the device will be simple, durable and inexpensive inconstruction, as well as convenient, practical, serviceable and eflicient in its use.
With the foregoing and other objects in view, which will appear as the description proceeds, the invention resides in the combination and arrangement of parts, and in the details of construction hereinafter described and claimed.
The preferred embodiments of the invention are illustrated in the accompanying drawings,'
wherein:
Figure 1 is a.- fragmentary side elevational view of a printing machine folder to which an embodiment of the delivery invention has been operatively applied;
Figure 2 is an elevational view, partly in section, as seen in the direction of the arrow 2 of Figure 1;
Figure 3 is a fragmentary side elevational view of a modified form of the invention;
Figure 4 is a view of the modified form of the invention similar to that disclosed in Figure 3, but showing a different adjustment of same; and
Figure 5 is a fragmentary elevational view of details embodied in Figures 3 and 4, as seen in the direction of the arrow 5 of Figure 3. t
In the drawings, the numerals l0 and I0 designate supporting members or standards .of a frame on which delivery or folding rolls l l are rotatably mounted, one of the rolls being yieldingly or resiliently mounted by means enclosed in a casing H fastened to the frame of the device in accordance with well-known practice. The standards l0 and III are providedwith bearing blocks !2, l3 in which a shaft I4 is rotatably mounted. The shaft I4 has rotatably mounted thereon a gear l5 which is coactingly engaged with a'plurality of segmental gears l6 each secured to ,Shafts or bars I1 rotatably fastened 01. Supported in spaced relation on extensions l8 formed on each of a pair of plates or members I 9, l 9' which are secured on shaft I4. To the bars I! a pair of dish-shaped guide members or pans 21, 22 are also slidably or adjustably secured as shown in Figure 2.
The shafts I! are flattened on one side as at 23 to which flattened surfaces are fastened by screws 24 the resilient delivery fan arms or blades 25 which as best shown in Figure 1, in combination with discs or plates 30 fixed to the rotatable shaft [4 and suitably aperturedto receive therethrough the bars l|,-are adapted to receive products passing downwardly from the folding rolls II, the products passing thence through a slot or guideway 26, arranged between guide members 21, adjustably secured to the frame II in any suitable or well-known manner which in the present instance comprises a socket or jaw member 28, 28 formed on each of the said guide members 21. The sockets or jaws 28 accommodate studs or pins 29, 29 fastened in the frame of the device and engaged by set screws 3| threaded in the jaw members 28, 28 formed on each of the said guide members 21.
The products received by the fan delivery blades 25 are detached therefrom by stripping fingers or stops 32 secured on a rod or bar 32' fastened to the standards l0, l0 and are deposited on endless traveling tapes 33 which are engaged with drums 34, 35 supported on shafts 36, mounted at one end in the standards I0, l0 and at the other end in arms or members 31 adjustably or rockingly supported on a pair of uprights 38, one of which is disclosed in Figure 1.
In further accordance with the present invention, a bracket or arm 39 is secured to the gear IS, the bracket having an extension 4| which is engaged on either side by a pair of adjusting screws 42, 43 which are threadedly engaged in lugs or posts 44 fastened on or formed integrally with the member 19, the said adjusting screws 42, 43 being fastened in the desired position by lock nuts 45. It will now be seen that all of the gears l6 and consequently all of the fan delivery blades 25 can be simultaneously adjusted by turning the single gear IS on the shaft l4 which is accomplished by turning the adjusting screws 42, 43 mentioned above. The movement or rotation of the fan delivery blades 25 when turning with their shafts I! will increase or decrease the distance or space as measured from the extremities of the discs 30 to the nearest point of each blade 25.
It will now be understood that products pass- I ing down through the slot 25 will be clampingly held between the blades 25 and the edges of the discs 35 and carried therebetween until engaged by the fixed stripping fingers 32. While clamped between the resilient arms 25 and discs 35 the products will be bulged in by each disc between each adjacent pair of discs 38, in this manner a comparatively secure grip being maintained on the successively received products by the fan delivery blades or rotating carrier assembly until they are stripped therefrom on to the tapes 33.
In Figures 3, 4 and 5, a modified form of the invention is shown wherein resilient fan delivery arms 46 are fixedly secured in any suitable manner as by the screws 55' to disc-shapedmembers 41, the hubs d8 of which are secured or keyed to a driven shaft 49 which corresponds to shaft M of Figure 1. On the shaft 49, discs or plates 5| having projections 52 are fastened, the plates 5| being limitedly rotatable on the shaft 49' of the carrier assembly and connected to each other by a rod or bar 53.
As best shown in Figure 3, the end of the bar 53 protrudes through a slot 54 formed in each of the disc-shaped members 51 and may be slid or adjusted axially or lengthwise of the slot 55' to the desired position by loosening nuts 55 which clamp same to the aforesaid members 47, after which the nuts 55 are tightened. By comparison of Figures 3. and 4, it will be seen that the space betweenthe fan blades 46 and the projections 52 of the discs 5| can be varied for accommodating products of. different thicknesses, it being noted that the series of discs 5| will all be simultaneously adjusted when the bar 53 is moved lengthwise of the said slot 54. It will also be understood. that while in: Figure 5 a representative number only of fan delivery blades 45 and coacting discs 5| are shown, as many blades and discs as are desired or requisite may be empl yed. y
, In the modified form of the, invention last described and illustrated in Figures 3, 4 and 5, the resilient fan arms or blades 46 are fixed n the carrier assembly while the discs are adjustable. In the first form of the: invention, shown in, Figures 1 and 2,..th resilient fan arms or blades. 25 are adjustable on the carrier assembly while the discs 5! are fixed on the rotatable shaft I14.
It will be understood that the invention may be embodied. in other specific forms without departing from the spirit or essential attributes thereof, and it is therefore desired the present embodiment be considered in all respects as illustrative and not restrictive, reference being had to the appended claims rather than to the foregoing description to indicate-the scope of the invention.
What I claim is: i

In. delivery mechanism for a printing machine, the combination of a carrier, a plurality of fan delivery blades adjustably mounted on said carrier, sheet engaging means on said carrier, iand other means for simultaneously adjusting all of said blades relatively to said sheet engagingmeans for receiving products of variable thicknesses.
2. In delivery mechanism for a printing machine, the combination of a shaft, a plurality of fan.- blades' fastenedtc said shaft, 2. second shaft, a. plurality of members fastened to said second shaft, and. means for. turning. thefirst mentioned shaft to move the fan blades towards and away from the said members whereby products of various thicknesses may be clampingly engaged between said blades and members.
3. In a delivery apparatus for a printing machine of the character described, a shaft, members fastened to said shaft, a plurality of other 5 shafts rotatably arranged in said members, a plurality of fan delivery arms secured to said plurality of other shafts, a plurality of gears fastened to the ends of said last-mentioned shafts, a gear rotatable on the first-mentioned shaft and meshing with all of the said plurality of gears, and means for turning the said last-mentioned gear whereby all of the fan delivery arms may be simultaneously adjusted.
4. In a delivery apparatus for a printing machine of the character described, a shaft having a gear rotatable thereon, a pair of members secured to said shaft and arranged in spaced relation thereon, a plurality of other gears meshing with said first-mentioned gear, a plurality of other shafts rotatably arranged insaid members, each of said other gears being securedto one of said other shafts, a fan delivery blade secured to each of the last mentioned, shafts, and means. coactingly connected to the first-mentioned gear and one of the said members. for adjusting the said first-mentioned gear to simultaneously rotate all of the other gears and. consequently adjust all of the fan delivery blades for accommodating products of various thicknesses between said blades and said members.

In a delivery apparatus for: a printing machine of the character described, the combination of a driven shaft, an assembly including fan delivery blades and coacting discs connected to said 36 driven shaft and revolving therewith, other shafts to which said blades are fastened, and gear means fastened to all of said shafts for predeterminedly arranging the said assembly in any one of a plurality of positions for accommodat- .0v ing products of various thicknesses.
6. In a delivery mechanism for a printing machine, the. combination of a frame, a shaft rotatably arranged in said frame, a pair of members arranged in spaced relation on the shaft, a plurality of other shafts rotatably arranged in and between said members, a plurality of other members fastened to said first mentioned shaft, gear means rotatably arranged on the first shaft, a gear fastened to each of the rotatably mounted shafts and meshing with the gear means, a fan blade fastened to. each of the rotatably mounted shafts, and adjusting means secured to one of said pair of members whereby when the first mentioned gear means is rotated all of the said fans may be adjusted relatively to the said plurality of members in order to accommodate a variable number of products therebetwe'en.

In a delivery mechanism of the character described, a shaft, a plurality of members secured to said shaft, a plurality of other shafts rotatably arranged in said members, a fan delivery blade and a gear secured to each of said last mentioned shafts, a gear rotatably mounted on the first mentioned shaft, and manually operable means for turning all of said gears to simultaneously adjust all of the fan delivery blades.
8. In a delivery mechanism, a rotary carrier, a plurality of means rotatably supported on the carrier, fan blades mounted on said plurality of means, and other means adjustable with relation to the carrier for simultaneously moving all of the fan blades to accommodate products varying in thickness.
9. In a delivery mechanism, a rotary carrier,
plurality oi. shafts rotatably supported adjacent the periphery of said carrier, fan blades mounted on said shafts, and means on the carrier for simultaneously rotating the said shafts to efiect adjustment of the fan blades.
10. In a delivery mechanism, a rotary carrier, a plurality of sets of fan blades disposed about the carrier and forming product receptacles therewith of fixed depth, and means adjustable with respect to the carrier for simultaneously varying the width of the receptacles to accommodate products varying in thickness.
