This invention relates to a stand, the general object of the invention being to provide means whereby a tray can be placed in a horizontal position at the upper end of a standard or held in a horizontal position from one side of an intermediate part of the standard, the device forming part of a reading stand, such as forms the subject matter of my Patent No. 1,937,066, dated November 28, 1933.

This invention also consists in certain other features of construction and in the combination and arrangement-of the several parts, to be hereinafter fully described, illustrated in the accompanying drawing and specifically pointed out in the appended claim.

In describing the invention in detail, reference will be had to the accompanying drawing wherein like characters denote like or corresponding parts throughout the several views, and in which:-

Figure l is an elevation of the stand, with the rack in open position and the tray supported in inoperative position at the upper end of the standard.

Figure 2 is a view showing the rack dropped into the standard and with the tray in horizontal position at the top of the standard and the side support for the tray in folded position.

Figure 3 is a detail view, partly in section, showing the tray supported from the supporting 30 member at one side of the standard.

Figure 4 is an edge View of the tray.

Figure 5 is a view of the swinging part of the tray supporting means.

In this drawing, the numeral I indicates a 35 hollow standard having its lower end connected to the base 2, the standard being formed of two sections, with the upper section I pivotally connected to the lower section, as shown at 3. The supporting rack, shown generally at 4, is adapted 40 to be folded and dropped within the hollow standard, as in my patent above mentioned, when not in use. The tray is shown at 5, and a perforated projection 6 depends from the bottom of the tray, the perforation of which is adapted to receive 45 a pin 1 which passes through holes in the upper end of the standard adjacent a side part thereof so that the tray pivots on this pin, which enables the tray to be placed in a horizontal position at the upper end of the standard, as shown in Figure 50 2, or swung into vertical position, as shown in Figure 1. The pin is removable so that the tray can be entirely removed from the standard and said tray has a loop forming part 8 on its bottom which fits in the upper end of the standard, when the tray is in horizontal position, as shown in Figure 2, and helps to hold'the tray in horizontal 5 position. A hinged strap 9 is fastened to one side of the standard below the pivotal point 3 and a long strap I0 is pivoted to the upper end of the strap 9, as shown at H, and this strap ID has a projection l2 on its inner end for engaging a 10 part of the strap 9 so that downward movement of the strap I0 is limited as the same cannot move downwardly beyond a horizontal position, as shown in Figure 3. This strap is adapted to pass through the loop 8, as also shown in Figure 3, 15 so as to'support the tray in horizontal position. When the tray is removed from the strap It], said strap is swung upwardly and a latch 13 is engaged with its upper end so as to hold the strap [0 in the position its occupies in Figures 1 and 2. 20

From the foregoing it will be seen that the tray can be placed in any one of the three positions shown in the drawing, so that it will form a small table when in the position shown in Figure 2. and will form an ash receiver or the like, when in the position shown in Figure 3, and when the rack is in use, or the tray can be swung to inoperative position out of the way of the rack when said rack is in use. A small ash receiving tray I4 may be placed in the tray 5, when desired, as shown in Figure 3.

It is thought from the foregoing description that the advantages and novel features of the invention will be readily apparent.

It is to be understood that changes may bev made in the construction and in the combination and arrangement of the several parts, provided that such changes fall within the scope of the appended claim.

What is claimed is:

In combination with a standard, a fiat hinged leaf vertically disposed on said standard, a second leaf pivotally connected to the upper end of the first leaf to swing in a vertical plane, an integral stop on the second leaf for limiting downward movement of the leaf beyond a horizontal position, a tray having a loop forming member depending from its bottom for engaging the second leaf, and latch means for holding said second leaf in vertical position and against the standard.
