The present invention relates to containers and, to illustrate one form which it may take, is here shown as applied to a cigarette container of the usual hinged type. Obviously it is applicable to other forms.

It has for its object to provide a container for articles as, for example, cigarettes, combined with which is a perpetual calendar so disposed and assembled with the container as to be readily manipulated and set, and applied to the case in such manner that there is no interference in the ordinary use of the container nor any diminution of its cubical area, nor are there any objectionable projections interiorly which might injure or interfere with the articles as, for example, cigarettes, when placed in the container.

Furthermore, the disposition of the calendar parts is such that when once set they are not likely to be displaced as they are incapable of manipulation exteriorly of the container and their arrangement is such that the external appearance of the container or case is in no way detracted from by the calendar parts, but is, in fact, enhanced by the ornamental appearance produced.

In the drawing herewith I have shown a cigarette case as one form of the container to which my invention is applied, and in said drawing:

Figure 1 is a View in plan of the container having the calendar applied thereto.

Figure 2 is a perspective View showing the container in open position and illustrating the method of attaching the calendar parts and operating the slides.

Figure 3 is a longitudinal sectional view substantially on the line 3 3 of Figure 1.

Figure 4 is a cross sectional view substantially on the line 4-4 of Figure 1.

Referring to the drawing by numbers, like numbers indicating like parts in the several views, it will be seen that the container is made up of two members, here shown as hinged together, the member I9 constituting the cover portion and the member I I constituting the container portion. The articles I2, here shown, are cigarettes adapted to be placed in the container portion and there held by the usual clip I3.

The cover portion I may, as stated, be hinged to the container portion II, this being done in any suitable or convenient manner, as by a long hinge I4, which may be of the usual spring type.

Mounted on one of the container members, preferably, and as here shown,. the cover member I0, is a plate I5 of substantially H-shaped formation, the central portion or cross bar of which carries the day dates, running from 1 to 31 inclusive.

(Cl. llil- 109) Extending from the central portion of plate I5, here shown as separate, although they may be formed integral therewith, are the portions I6 and I'I which are stamped up so as to be raised from the cover member I and provide recesses I8, as 5 best shown in Figures 3 and 4, the outer, inner, and end edges of the raised plate I5 being downwardly turned so as to make a close linished contact with the cover member I!) of the container and retain the slide members, hereinafter de- 10 scribed, in place. The plate I5, and the recessed members I5 and I'I, may be secured in any suitable manner to the cover plate ID, but preferably, as here shown, the plate I5 will be fixedly secured, in any usual manner, to the cover member III, and the members I5 and II for the purpose of assembly, will be provided at the ends and at the edges with projections I9 which pass through slits or apertures in the cover plate It) and clinch down so as to provide Va substantially smooth, unobstructed interior face for the cover Ii and permit of the polishing or finishing of the interior surface of the cover I0, there being no objectionable protuberances or projections to interfere with the appearance or with the finish of the interior surface.

The raised members I6 and I1 of plate I5 are provided with apertures 2| and 22, one of the members I6, as here shown, having an aperture which will expose letters indicating the days of the week. The other member II has an aperture which will expose letters or indicia indicating the month.

Mounted in the recess I8 of the member I6 is a slide 20 on which indicia indicating the days 35 of the week are provided, which slide will be of such length and have such range of movement in recess I8 that it can be set to bring the letter indicating any day 0I" the week opposite the initial date day of the month on which that week day falls, and obviously the day slide may be manipulated to take care of any calendar adjustment that may be necessary, the slides being held from complete removal by the downwardly turned edges of the members.

The month slide 23 will be manipulated to bring in position exposed to the aperture 22, any one of the twelve months, the slide 23 being of such length and range of movement as to permit it to be set in twelve different positions.

In order to provide for manipulation of these slides 20 and 23, I form the cover member I0 of the container with slots 24 and 25, and projecting from the slides 2| and 23 are studs 26 and 21, the ends of which project slightly beyond 65 the bottom of the cover member I so as to be readily engaged by the ngernail and the slides moved to the desired position. The studs 26 and `2'! are small and their projection slight so that neither they nor the slots materially affect the interior appearance of the cover, nor do the studs Yproject far enough to interfere with or injure the goods contained in the box.

The parts are so assembled that the slide containing recesses and the slides are closelyV fitted so that friction of the slides in the recesses Will `maintain them in their adjusted positions and yet permit them to be moved to their different positions Without any undue exertion.

It Will be seen that by the expedient of having a central or bar portion and the elongated symmetrically arranged leg portions on each side thereof, which leg portions are-elevated to form the slide recesses, a very effective and ornamental result is provided, as Well as a unique utility in the matter of the perpetual calendar feature. The construction is such that it lends itself very conveniently to nishes in contrasting metals or enamels and, Without departing from the conventional form of the type of container shown, gives a combination which, preserving all of the necessary features and maximum cubical area of a container of this type, has as Well the added feature of the perpetual calendar. obviously the indicia may be so disposed Vas to read with the long dimension horizontal, if desired. Such departures in structure and assembly as Vlie Within the skill of the mechanic may, of

course, be made from the structure here shown and still remain within the purview of my invention.

I claim:-

1. Acontainer of the class described, comprising separable members, one of Which members is provided with an exteriorly disposed fixed indiciabearing area, an exteriorly disposed apertured slide-receiving section adjacent said area, an indicia-bearing slide movable in said apertured section, and means for manipulating said slide.

2. A container of the class described comprising separable members, a xed indicia bearing plate` on one of said members, an apertured exteriorly disposed slide-receiving plate adjacent said indicia-bearing plate forming an indiciabearing slide in said apertured plate, and means aossjee projecting interiorly of said container member for manipulating said slide.

3. A container of the class described comprising separable members, a fixed indicia-bearing plate forming a central portion on one of said 5 members, apertured exteriorly disposed slidereceiving plates secured to said container at each side of said central portion, indicia-bearing slides mounted beneath said apertured plates, and means projecting interiorly of said container V1() member for manipulating said slides.

4. A container of the class described comprising separable members, a fixed indicia-bearing plate on one of said members, recessed apertured exteriorly disposed slide-receiving plates on each side of said central plate, indicia-bearing slides in said recessed apertured plates, and means operable from the inside of said plate-'carrying member for manipulating said slides.

5. A container of the class described having an article receiving member, a cover member having slots therein hinged thereto, a fixed indiciabearing plate secured to said cover member, apertured exteriorly disposed recessed plate members adjacent said first-named plate member, indiciabearing slides mounted in said recessed plate members, and means on said slides extending into the slots in said member and accessible from the inside of said slotted cover plate for operating said indicia-bearing slides.

A container of the class described having an article receiving member, a slotted cover member hinged thereto, plate members assembled in substantially H-shaped form secured exteriorly of said cover and comprising a horizontal ixed limb bearing indicia, apertured exteriorly disposed and recessed vertical limbs adjacent said horizontal limb, indicia-bearing slides in saidV recessed vertical limbs, and projections on Vsaid slides-passing through the slots in said cover 40, member and operable from the inside of said member to manipulate said slides.

A container of theV class described having an article receiving member, a slotted cover member hinged thereto, plate members assembled in 4a substantially H-shape form and comprising a fixed plate having day dates thereon and forming a horizontal limb, an apertured and recessed ver-- tical limb disposed exteriorly on said cover ad- Y jacent said horizontal limb, a slide in said rei cessed plate having on its upper surface day names in sequence readable through said apertured plate and having a projection extending through the slot insaid cover to permit; manipulation of said slide from the inside of said cover, a second apertured and Yrecessed vertical limb disposed exteriorly of said cover on the opposite side of said day date plate, and a slide in said secondi recessed plate having on its upper surface the ,l names of the month and having a projection on 601' its underside extending into the slot in said cover to permit said month name slide to be manipulated.
