(01. 24-207) The invention relates to a closure device, particularly applicable to cloths, under cloths and all other articles made of flexible materials and comprising members fixed in spaced relation or at intervals on a band and adapted to slide on flanges provided on the edges to be united.
One object of the invention is to avoid the crumpling or frowning as well as the wear of the .fabric and to insure straight sliding movement of the fastening members without rubbing and jamming.
Another object of the invention is to enable the closure to be easily locked and unlocked in any desired position. l5 According to the invention, the fastening members are fixed in. spaced relation to the band, which band may be also formed as a chord like member and said fastening members are provided with notches formed in the side faces of said members adapted to accommodate the folds formed on the band between the members when said members are moved towards and in contact with each other.
The fastening members are provided with side openings accommodating the flangededges to be '25 united and either the band surrounds the lower parts of the fastening members to be fixed thereto substantially in the centralplane passing through the side openings, or the fastening members are provided with a flat base applied against the band the latter'thus retaining the members in a straight position when a pull is exerted thereon to operate the closure. According to another feature of the inv'ention the closure device is provided with locking means comprising strings or cords one of the ends of which is of larger diameter than the other and passing through holes provided in the leading member, said strings or cords being'provided with knots, pearls or the like and the arrangement being such that when a pull is exerted on the thin ends of the strings or cords the flange or flanges is or are jammed in the hole or holes of the fastening member while when a pull is exerted on the 7 thick end of the strings or cords the jamming action is removed.
According to another feature of the invention the ends of the flanges are provided with plate-like members having-sliders mounted thereon, saidsliders forming stops for the fastening members 50 or enabling the latter to be removed from the edges to be united, according to whether said sliders are placed adjacent said edges or moved away therefrom.

The closure in accordance with the invention 3 comprises a series of fastening members I fixed in spaced relation, as by stitching, on a band 2 and sliding on to the parts 3 to be united. These parts are provided with flanged or corded edges 4 (Figs. 1 and 2). In prior closures of this type, the fastening members were fixed to the band by that face thereof which is remote from the central plane containing the lateral openings accommodating the edges to be united, with the result that when a pull was exerted on the band the fastening members were reaching an inclined position cause ing the jamming thereof on the edges of the'fabric and soon wearing out the latter, the operation of the closure being moreover diflicult. In accordance with the invention, the fastening members are fixed to the band'through their middle or central point, that is to, say through a. point lying approximately in the plane containing the flanges or corded edges on which the fastening members are adapted to slide.
This method of fixing the fastening members is illustrated in Figures 3 and 4, showing that the band 2 has been stitched on the members I along its middle or central line, so as to surround the adjacent or lower part of each member and so that the said members are fixed to said band at points lying on the longitudinal, vertical and central axis as shown in Fig. 3 and centrally in each member as shown in Fig. 4.
Such stitching may be performed, for example,
by means of threads 5 passing through the central holes 26 of the fastening members.
When the leading member 6 is moved from the position shown in Fig. 1 to that illustrated Fig. 2, the fastening members are'applied against each other by their middle or central portion with the result that they slide quite freely.
Owing to the arrangement illustrated in Figs. 3 and 4 when a pull is exerted on the leading member 6 to move the closure from the position shown in Fig. 2 to that illustrated in Fig. 1, the pull which is applied to the fastening members lies substantially in the plane of the resisting rubbing forces and passessubstantially through the central portion of said members, so that they slide as freely as before without any tendency of tilting and jamming.
As will be seen in Fig. 4, the slots I in which 'pass the edge parts 8 of the fabric are relatively long .and they are further arranged in line with one another in the plane containing the axis of the holes 8 accommodating the flanges 4.
Owing to this arrangement the ends of the slots 1 have no tendency to wear out the edge portions of the fabric, while instead of crimpling or frowning and of jamming in the holes 8 as with certain known fastening members, said edge portions are flattened between the two faces of the slots 1.
The wear is still further reduced by forming the holes 8 as well as the slots 1 of relatively large sizes and making the flanges relatively thick.
The axial connection of the fastening members could also be insured by passing or stitching them on a cord instead of stitching them on a band.
It will be observed that in the arrangement in accordance with the invention the band 2 does not pass through the slots I or the holes 8, so that there will be no contact between said band and the edges to be united and rubbing on said edges as well as crumpling of the band by forming small folds between the surfaces of the holes 8 and the edges to be united are avoided.
Fig. 5 illustrates a leading member 6 provided with a locking device in accordance with the invention.
Said device comprises two small cords 9 passing through the holes 8 and. thickened at one of their ends. Their thin ends are united together and to a pearl III, while the thick ends are fastened to two pearls I I (oralso united with one another and with a tassel). 1 When a pull is exerted on the pearl Hi, the thick ends of the cords are engaged in the holes 8 causing the jamming of the flanges 4 therein. Owing to this arrangement the closure device may be retained in closed position as illustrated in Fig. l, or in any intermediate position between the open and closed positions.
When a pull is exerted on the pearls Ii, the thin ends of the cords are engaged in the holes 8 and the jamming action on the flanges I is removed, owing to the holes 8 being made large enou h to enable the sliding movement of the fastening members is effected without difficulty.
To close the device it is suflicient to exert a pull (in upward direction in Fig. 2) on the leading member 6 and at or about the end of this movement, to pull in turn the pearl It so as to lock the 15 closure in the desired position.
The flanges in accordance with the invention are formed with flattened ends and connected therethrough to end plates l6 (Figs. 1, 2 and 6). Each of these'plates is provided with a slider I1 20 mounted thereon by means of an extension I8 passing through a slot I9.
When the sliders are moved to the position 11- lustrated in Figures 2 and 6, the flanges are in line'with the plate ends supporting 'the sliders 25 and=the total thickness of these parts is such that they cannot pass through the slots I of the fastening members. In this manner these plates .and sliders form stops for the fastening members.

Fig. 7 illustrates a leading member of ogee 40 shape which member is to be held at the top and the bottom thereof to operate the closure.
Fig. 8 represents another form of leading member which is to be held at the sides thereof, such a'mode of holding the member beingmore con- 45 venient. The upper part of the member is larger than the lower part thereof, so that the fingers come in contact with the upper part only without a pressure being exerted on the fabric the latter being thus able to slide freely through the slots 50 of the member. Such-a fastening member has the shape of a flat bar or breach and terminates harmoniously with the closure.
In Figs. 9 and 10 a leading member'is illustrated which is provided with a transverse hole 55 20 accommodating a loop 2| formed of a silk or metal thread and having a tassel 22 mounted thereon. In such a case the closure may be opened and closed by pulling the tassel in one or the other direction as the overhanging is of 0 reduced value.
In the fastening members which are provided with stitching holes to enable them to be stitched on the band in the usual manner, these stitching holes terminate on the faces of the-fastening a5 members which are opposite and in contact with is moved in the 3 and 4, aside from these threads, portions of the band are also extended to the stitching holes.
When the fastening members are moved against each other, to open-the closure, the lower parts of the fastening member remain spaced from one another with the thickness of the threads and of the folds of the band, and the chaplet so formed takes a curved form i. e. the shape of a scorpion tail, rendering thus the closing movement very difficult.
To avoid this drawback, and in accordance with the invention, the stitching holes terminate in notches 23 (Figs. Hand 12) adapted to accommodate exactly the thicknesses of the band folds 28 interposed between the fastening members, so that the latter main in straight and correct position when moved against each other (Fi 12).
Instead of the fastening members being stitched by their middle or central part to avoid their twisting or rotating movement, as illustrated in Figs. 3, 4, 5, l1 and 12, said members may be also secured as illustrated in Fig. 13.
In this figure, instead of being formed with a rounded lower face, the fastening members i are provided with a flat face 24 firmly secured as by stitching threads 5 on the band 2.
The stitching holes 26 terminate again into notches such as 23 and on either side of the face 24 small notches 25 are formed and adapted to accommodate the folds of the band so that when the fastening members are moved together they will lie flat against each other. y when a pull is exerted on the band (or on the leading member) in order to move the device in the closed position, the band remains straight because it is taut, and the fixing of the fastening members prevent their rotating movement (in anticlockwise direction in Fig. 13) and remain in correct position without jamming on the edges to be united.
It is to be understood that the invention has been described and illustrated by way of example and that modifications may be made therein without departing from the spirit thereof.
I claim:
1. A closure device for cloths and other articles made of flexible materials comprising flanged edges to be united and separated, a flexible band, fastening members provided with side openings accommodating said flanged edges, said fastening members being fixed in spaced relation to said band, and notches in the side faces of said members to accommodate the :folds of the band between the members when the latter are adjacent to and in contact with each other.

A closure device for cloths and other articles made of' flexible materials comprising flanged edges to be united and separated, a flexible band, fastening membersflxed in spaced relation to said band, notches in-the side faces of said members to accommodate the folds of the band between the members when the latter are moved adjacent to and in contact with each other, side openings in the fastening members accommodating the said flanged edges and the said openings located in one and the same plane and substantially the plane in which the fastening members are fixed to the band.
3. A closure device for cloths and other articles made of flexible materials comprising flanged edges to be united and separated, a flexible band, fastening members fixed in spaced relation to said band, lateral openings in said fastening members receiving said flanged edges, plates provided at the ends of the flanged edges, sliders mounted on said plates to be moved to and from said flanged edges, said sliders forming stops for the fastening members when located adjacent the flanged edges, and said plates passing through said openings when the sliders are moved away from the flanged edges whereby the fastening members may be mounted on or separated from the flanged edges.

A closure device for cloths and other articles made of flexible materials comprising flanged edges to be united and separated, fastening members, side openings in the said fastening members accommodating said flanged edges, a flexible band, the fastening members fixed in spaced relation to said band, notches in the side faces of the fastening members to accommodate the folds of the band when the fastening members are moved towards each other and the band surrounding the lower part of the fastening members and being fixed thereto substantially in the central plane passing through the side openings.
