It is known to make accumulators from socalled envelopes filled with active substance, said envelopes being fixed to frame rods of conducting material, which in their turn are connected to common bus-bars or pole bolts for instance by means of connecting lugs,
The known constructions of this kind have the drawbacks that by means of bolted or riveted joints it is difficult to obtain satisfactory electric connection between the frames or the connecting lugs and the bus-bars or the pole bolts.
The object of the present invention is to remove the said drawbacks.
This application is a division of application Serial No. 661,341, filed March 16, 1933.
The invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawing, in which Fig. 1 is a group of accumulator plates in front view, and
Fig. 2 the same group in side View.
Figs. 3 and 4 are views of other embodiments in front view.
Fig. 5 shows a detail of a somewhat modified embodiment.
In the figures the numeral I indicates socalled envelopes for electric accumulators made from thin perforated sheet metal and filled with active substance, which elements at the ends are fixed to frame rods 2, which by means of connecting lugs 3 are connected to a bus-bar 5, which is electrically connected to a pole bolt 4.
According to the invention the bus-bar 5 is provided with slits 6 extending in the transverse direction, and a connecting lug 3 is inserted in each of the said slits. In the longitudinal direction of the bus-bar there is a bolt hole 1, and the connecting lugs are provided with corresponding bolt holes 8. Through the bolt hole I of the bus-bar and the bolt holes 8 of the connecting lugs is inserted a bolt 9, and by means of a nut ID or by riveting a good and secure contact is obtained between the connecting lugs and the bus-bar. In order to make the separate parts of the bus-bar more reselient the slits 6 are preferably provided with extensions II at their interior ends. The bus-bar may consist of cast metal or metal compressed during casting. The bus-bar may also be made from sheet metal as No. 704,030. In Sweden in the illustrated embodiment. Before fastening the connecting lugs to the bus-bar the latter may be riveted, screwed or welded to a pole bolt 4. In the latter case the nickeling of the whole piece is preferably made after the welding. In order that no portions of the bus-bar shall extend past the outer envelopes the bolt heads 32 and the nuts 33 respectively are sunk, and the outer connecting lugs 34 are provided with a depression 35 corresponding to the bolt heads as disclosed in Fig. 5.
In Figs. 3 and 4 two somewhat modified embodiments are shown. Instead of special connecting lugs the frame rods 2 themselves are fastened in the slits ii of the bus-bar 5 and to the end surfaces of the bus-bar respectively. In the embodiment according to Fig. 3 the frame rods may be provided with recesses 13 for the straining bolt 9. The said recesses, however, are not necessary, but the frame rods may also be provided with projections or the like laterally of the bolt. In the embodiment according to Fig. 4 the frame rods 2 are provided with ears M for the introduction into the slits of the bus-bar 5.
Having now described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
.1. In an electric accumulator, frame rods, envelopes filled with active substance and fixed to said rods, a bus bar having slits therein, connecting lugs having plain surfaces engaged in said slits and secured to said frame rods, a bolt extending through said lugs and bus bar, and terminal members at the ends of the bolt, the inner ends of said slits being widened.
2. In an electric accumulator, frame rods, envelopes filled with active substance and fixed to said frame rods, a bus bar having slits therein, connecting lugs engaged in the slits in said bus bar and secured to said frame rods, said bus bar and connecting lugs having bolt holes therein, a bolt extending through said holes, said bus bar and said connecting lugs having corresponding depressions therein, and terminal members on said bolt engaging in said depressions, said slits being widened at their inner ends.
