My invention relates to hair clippers and is an improvement on that type of clipper shown, for example, in my co-pending application Serial Number 545,964, led June 22, 1931, for Clipper blade control, Patent No. 1,895,183, dated January 24, 1933.
In this type of clipper, the comb and the cutter blade are so mounted that by movement of the comb angularly about a pivotal mounting on the 1..,- clipper frame, an endwise sliding movement is effected between the comb and cutter blade so as to vary the coarseness of the cut.
The present invention h-as for its principal purpose the provision of a combined cover member 1;; and comb supporting member which will serve not only as a means for supporting the comb but will also enclose and protect the working parts such as the driving arm for the cutter blade and its connections to the cutter blade.
My invention contemplates also the provision in conjunction with the cover member of a novel means for angularly adjusting the cover and comb.
My invention also contemplates in connection with the cover member mentioned, the arrangement of the cover in such fashion that although it does not .disturb the cutter blade in operation, it may be made to t very closely thereto and thus exclude hair and other matter from with- 3o. in the cover.
I will describe the preferred form of my invention by reference to the accompanying drawing wherein- Fig. 1 is 4a side view of the front portion of a 35 clipper embodying my invention;
Fig. 2 is a longitudinal section through the front portion of the clipper showing the clipper adjusted for a very ne cut; l
Fig. 3 is a similar section showing the clipper i0 adjusted for the coarser cut;
Fig. 4 is a section on the line 4-4 of Fig. 1; and
Fig. 5 is a fragmentary view similar to Fig. 1 showing the change in the position of the operating member in adjusting the cut of the clipper. Referring now in detail to the drawing, numeral 5 indicates the clipper fra-me, 6 and 1 are the comb and cutter blade respectively, and 8 is the driving arm which is preferably driven by 50 an electro-magnet in a well known fashion, this electro-magnet being housed in the frame 5 and not shown herein as it forms no part of the present invention.
The comb 6 is carried by a combined support- 55 ing and cover member or head 9 which is pivoted at both sidesof the frame, for example by means of the members I0, so that it can swing about these pivots to cause angular movement of the comb 6 with respect to the clipper frame. This head 9, it will be noted, has a front portion Il extended up and overlapping with the clipper frame at I2 and the side portions I3 and I4 also overlap with the sides of the frame which are cut out as indicated at I5 so that the cover is never separated from the frame, even in the extreme 1U forward adjustment thereof.
'Ihe front I I and sides I3 and I4 of the ymovable head 9 are cut away as indicated at I5. This provides clearance for the cutter blade. The cutter blade is always pressed against the comb so that it is always in the same relative plane with respect to the comb. The driving arm 6 moves slightly up and down during adjustment of the mov-able head but, owing to the fact that the cutter blade remains in the same plane with respect to the comb, the clearance between the cutter blade and the movable housing remains the same.
lThe cover at the sides near the back has the extensions I1 land I8 which are turned 'inward as shown most clearly at Fig. 4 and serve as a means for securing the comb in position. The screws I 9 and 20 screw into these rextensions I1 and i8 to firmly attach the comb.
In order toadjust the comb plate angular-ly with respect 'to the frame, I provide the lever `2l o which lever is pivoted by means of the screw 22 to the clipper frame and this lever has -a short arm 23 provided with the inturned cam member 24 for operating the cover member. The cam member 24 fits in the opening 25 of the side wall 5 of the cover member and itwill be clear from an inspection of Figs. 1 and 5 that as the lever is moved down from the position shown in Fig. 5 to the position shown in Fig. 1, the cam member 24 engages with the wall 26 of opening 25 to push o the cover member outwardly and thus swing the comb and cover about the pivots I0. A limiting position is reached, however, when the member 24 strikes the web 21 at the back of the opening 25 and thus the web 21 and the member 24 func- 45 tion to limit the outer angular adjustment of the comb plate. In turning in the opposite directionthe edges of the sides I3 and I4 engage with the shoulders I5 to limit the adjustment of the comb and cover in this direction. The arm 23 of the lever 2| is very short, and a small amount of friction opposing rotation .of the lever is sulicient to prevent rotation of this arm by the pressure of the comb 6 when the clipper is being used. 4 as being placed directly beneath the head of the screw 22 .and bearing against the lever 2| to provide the necessary friction opposing a change of position of the lever 2|. K
It will be noted that the connection of the lever with the cover member 9 is substantially at the rear end of the cover and removed from the pivots IIJ. This has an additional advantage in that it enables one to have a rather large movement of the lever 2| for a small angular adjustment of the comb, thus making the adjustments capable of fine division and preventing'any diiiculty due to inability to properly gauge the adjustment.
HavingV thus described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
1. In a clipper, a clipper frame, a comb, a cutter blade, a driving arm for said blade, and means pivotally mounting said comb on thle frame comprising a cover member pivoted on the frame and carrying said comb, a lever pivoted on said frame at a point spaced from the pivot of the cover member and connected with said cover member for changing its angular position with respect to the frame, said lever and member having cooperating portions limiting the angular movement of the member in one direction.
2. In a clipper, a clipper frame, a comb, a cutter blade, a driving arm for said blade and means pivotally mounting said comb on the frame comprising a cover member pivoted on the frame and carrying said comb, and means for adjusting said member and comb angularly with respect to the frame, said last named means cooperating with said member to limit the movement of the member away from the frame.
3. In a clipper, a clipper frame, a comb, a cutter blade, a driving arm for said blade and means pivotally mounting said comb on the frame comprising a cover member pivoted on the frame and carrying said comb, an adjusting lever pivoted on the frame and cooperating cam portions on the'lever and cover for angularly adjusting the comb.
4. In a clipper, a clipper frame, a movable head pivotally mounted adjacent the end of the frame and projecting outwardly therefrom, a drive memberprojecting from the frame into the movable head, a comb blade fixed on the outer extremity oi said head, a cutter blade slidable on the comb blade, said driving member being connected with the cutter blade for operating said blade and providing a pivot about which said cutter blade is angularly movable in response to angular adjustments of said head about its pivot, and means for adjusting said head about its pivotal mounting on the frame.
5. In a clipper, a clipper frame, a movable head pivotally mounted adjacent the end of the frame and projecting outwardly therefrom, a comb blade xed on the outer extremity of said head, a cutter blade slidable on the comb blade, the front edge of the head being cut away to permit projection of the cutter blade between the head and the comb blade, means carried by the frame and cooperating with said cutter blade to cause said cutter blade to move forward and backward on the comb blade in response to an- 10 gular movement of said head, said cutter blade being movable angularly with respect to the frame to follow the angular movements of said head and thereby maintain the same clearance between the cutter blade and said front edge of the head in al1 positions of said head.
6. In a clipper, a clipper frame, a movable head pivotally mounted adjacent the end of the frame and projecting outwardly therefrom, a comb blade fixed on the outer extremity of said head, a cutter blade slidable on the comb blade,
the front edge of the head being cut away to permit projection of the cutter blade between the head and the comb blade, means carried by said frame providing a pivotal axis for said cutter blade between the pivotal axis of said head and the comb blade, whereby angular movement of said head causes angular movement of the cutter blade about said pivotal axis, and longitudinal movement of the cutter blade on the comb blade. '7. In a clipper, a clipper frame, a movable head pivotally mounted adjacent the end of the frame and projecting outwardly therefrom, a comb blade xed on the outer extremity of said head, a cutter blade slidable on the comb blade, the front edge of the head being cut away to permit projection of the cutter blade between the head and the comb blade, means carried by said frame providing a pivotal axis for said cutter blade between the pivotal axis of said head and the 0 comb blade, whereby angular movement of said head causes angular movement of the cutter blade about said pivotal axis, and longitudinal movement of the cutter blade on the comb blade,
said means comprising a driving arm pressing 5 said cutter blade against the comb blade.
8. In a clipper, a clipper frame, a movable head mounted on one end of said frame for angular movement with respect to said frame, and projecting outwardly from said frame, a comb blade xed on said head and spaced from the frame by said head, a cutter blade resting on said comb blade, said head and said comb blade being spaced apart at the front edge of said head, and said cutter blade projecting through the space between the comb blade and head, means to cause the cutter blade to slide forward and back on the comb blade in response to angular movementV of said head, and means for moving said head.
