4 Claims. (01. ear-2s) The invention relates to new and useful improvements in a combined can opener and. pouring spoutwhich is designed particularly for the opening of hermetically sealed cans and the dispensing of the liquid content therefrom.
,An object of the invention is to provide a can opener and pouring spout which are formed as a unit structure and wherein during the opening of the can the spout is attached to'the can and a sealed connection between the spout and the can formed along the portion of the ,can adjacent the opening through which the contents are to be dispensed.
In the drawing: Fig. 1 is' a plan view showing a combined can opener and pouring spout embodying the improvements as applied to a'container.
Fig. 2 is a longitudinal sectional view through the same. v
Fig. 3 is an end view of the combined opener and pouring spout showing the cutting device, the
sealing gasket and the spout, the parts being.
viewed from the inside of the spout. The can is also'shown -in' broken lines.
The invention is directed to a combined pouring spout and cutter formed as a unit which is ,a very simple iorm'of construction containing few parts so that it is cheap to manufacture. Attached to thespoutis a projecting flange having a seat for a gasket which contacts with the.
side wall of the can for making a sealed contact between the spout and the can. Also attached to the spout is a projecting handle which extends over the top of the can. Mounted on this handle is a retaining lug having a recess onits inner face and this retaining lug is adapted to engage the end s'eam of the can at a point diametrically opposite. the-point where the spout is attached. The lug is so disposed that the gasket is held pressed against the can, making a tight seal therewith when the lug is brought .into contact with the end seam. Attached "to this handle extending from the spout is-a cutter which cuts the opening in the can as the spout is applied thereto.
Referring more in detail to the drawing, the body portion of a can which is to be opened, is indicated at l. The end 2 of the can is secured to the body portion by a double seam 3 This is the usual typeof an hermetically sealed can which maybe used for packaging liquids; such as lubricating oils or the like. The spout is indicated at 4. "It consists of a body portion 5' from'which projects a pouring nozzle 6; said 5 body portion has a depending flange 1, the inner face of which is'provided with a recess 8. In this recess is located agasket 9. The flange L is arcuate in shape and conforms to the shaplngof the outer wall of the can. The gasket 9 is similarly shaped and is adapted to make con-. 5 tact with the curved surface of the wall of the can body below the double seam and portions of the double seam.
Rigidly attached to the body portion 5 of the pouring spout is a handle Ill. The handle III is 10 v This member ID not only serves as-a handle, but- 'it also serves as a means for attaching and 15 positioning the spout relative to the'can. It also serves as a carrying means, for the cutter for forming an opening in the end 2 of the can. Said handle is provided with an opening I I. The cutter for severing the can end is attached to 20 the underside of the handle I. Said cutter in+ -cludes spaced side walls or wing members 12 and I3, which'are connected by a main portion l4 constituting the primary cutting blade; said main portion H has a piercing point a and 25 cutting edges leading therefrom to the wing members. The'side or wing members l2 and I3 are each formed with a projecting flange l5 which is adapted to rest against the underface of the handle I!) and ascrew I6 associated with each 30 flange firmly secures the cutter to the underface of the handle Ill. As shown in Fig. 2, the
side members l2 and I3 are cut away at the upper end of the main portion forming the cut-- ting blade It as indicated at H. The opening ll 35 in the handle'extends from .one side member to the other.
Attached to the handle are twocentering pins I 8 and I9 and also a depending retaining lug 20.
Said retaining lug 20 is provided with a' recess 2| 40 on its inner face and a tapered portion 22 at the inner side of the lug. When the can opener and spout is to be applied to a can, the piercing point isplaced in contact with the end close to the double seam and as it is forced down into the can 45 by hand pressure on the upper side of the spout, the gasket will pass down alongside of the double seam and the outer face of the can. This downward pressure on the cutter will penetrate the can end and cut the end along diverging lines' Q substantially parallel with the end seam and thence along lines which are parallel and, extending inwardly towardthe center of the can. This will cause the portion 2a cut out of the end to roll downwardly and backwardly so as to give a can may be dispensed.
After the cutter is forced into the can to form the opening and the gasket placed adjacent the end seam, then the end 'of the handle or casting I is brought down so that the retaining pin '20 will pass over the end seam. The centering pins l8 and I9 will pass inside of the end seam and finally contact with the can end 2. The pins contacting with the can end will limit the downward movement of the handle and insure the proper positioning of the spout on the can with the gasket against the can. When the tapered portion 22 of.the lug contacts with the can end, it will force the handle I 0 to the right and this will draw the gasket 9 into tight sealing contact with the can wall and the can end seam. When the seam slips into the recess, the tool will be firmly attached to the can so that it is not easily dislodged and at the same time the gasket will be held compressed so as to make a tight seal and to insure that the oil passing out through the opening ll into the spout 4, will be dispensed through the nozzle 6. This sealing gasket is preferably made of duprene or some other substance which is hot attacked by the oil. Inorder to provide a proper vent opening for the can, the handle or casting I 0 is provided with a piercing member 23 which is secured in any suitable way to the handle and is shaped and dimensioned so as to penetrate the end, as indicated in Fig. 2 and thus provide a vent hole to admit air into the container as the contents are being poured from the spout.
It will be apparent from the above, that a very simple device has been provided for the opening of the can and-the dispensing of the liquid contents thereof. Said device may be quickly attached to the can and when appliedjthe oil may be dispensed through the spout rapidly and the can completely drained as the opening is formed very close to the end seam so that the oil is not trapped. It'will also be noted that the gasket contacts with the end seam which is rigid and therefore a very tight seal may be produced with the pressure that is available when the retaining lug is passed beneath the end seam at the opposite side of the can. It will also be noted that the body portion of the spout and the gasket extend throughout an arc of substantially 90 and this will give a funnel-shaped body portion to the spout to receive the oil and direct the same to the pouring nozzle.
It is obvious that minor changes in the details of construction and the arrangement of the parts,
may be made without departing from the spirit of the invention as set forth in the appended claims. 7
Having thus described the invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
