IMPROVEMENT IN UMBRELLA-HOLDERS FOR VEHICLES.

Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 202,385, dated April 16, 1878; application filed September 17, 1877.

To all whom it may concern:

7 Be it known that I, EVAN THOMAS, of J ackson, in the county of Northampton and State of North Carolina, have invented an Improved Umbrella-Holder for Carriages, l/Vagons, and other Vehicles, of which the following is a specification and I do herely declare that in the same is contained a full, clear, and exact description of my said invention, reference being had to the accompanying drawing and to the letters of reference marked thereon.

This invention relates to an adjustable device to be secured to some stationary part of a carriage, wagon, or other vehicle, for the purpose of holding an umbrella; and the invention consists of a vertical revoluble standard, resting in a stationary or fixed socket, and provided at its upper end with an adjustable clamp, of novel construction, in which the handle of the umbrella is held.

In the further description of the invention which follows, reference is made to the accompanying drawing, forming a part hereof, and in which- Figures 1, 2, and 3 are exterior views of the invention as seen from different points, and Fig. 4 is a plan of Fig. 2.

Similar letters of reference indicate similar parts in all the views.

A is a socket or step, fastened in any suitable manner to the floor, seat, or other stationarypart of the vehicle; and B, a standard, with the lower end thereof resting within the said socket or step, and adapted to turn freely therein, except when prevented by the setscrew a. The upper end of the standard B terminates in a curved bar, and is provided with'a clamp, between the two parts or jaws of which the umbrella-handle is confined. The said clamp consists of the jaws C D, the one, 0, being pivoted to the standard, and ad justablein angleofinclination,andtheother,D, connected to the former by a thumb-bolt, b.

Aset-screw, a, passes through the jaw O,and the end thereof is pointed, in order to admit of its enteringconical depressions in the curved bar, before referred to. By this means steadiness is imparted to the umbrella without undue strain being placed upon the set-screw,

The jaws are distended when the thumbbolt is unscrewed by the extension of a spiral spring, 0, coiled around the thumb-bolt, and the jaw D is prevented from turning by means of a pin, d, projecting from the inner face of the said jaw D, and which enters a perforation in the jaw O.

E is a hook, fastened to the side of the standard B, to support the driving-rein when not in use.

It will be seen that by the adjustable clamp being supported upon a revoluble standard, the attached umbrella may be placed in any desired position, and secured therein by means of set-screws a a. V

I do not broadly claim as my invention a standard capable of being revolved, and having an upper portion adapted to be turned to give the umbrella held therein the desired angle of inclination, for such an arrangement is not new; but the special features of improvement claimed as my invention are as followsthat is to say:

I claim- The jaws O and D, provided with the setscrew 1), spiral spring 0, and pin d, combined with the standard B andset-screw a,the said standard having at its upper end the curved bar with a series'of depressions, substantially as described.
