SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 620,616, dated March '7, 1899.

To all whmn it may concern:

Be it known that I, HIRAM J. SHOEMAKER, residing at Bridgeton, in the county of Gumberlaud and State of New Jersey, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Sunshade or Umbrella Carriers for Bicycles, of which the following isaspecification.

My invention relates to an improved construction of sunshade or umbrella carrier for bicycles, the object being to provide in a simple and inexpensive manner a carrier for this purpose which may be applied to bicycles whose frames may be of varying construction, said carrier being so arranged thatthe sunshade or umbrella may be readily moved or adjusted so as to protect the rider from the sun or other elements coming from .any direction.

The invention further contemplates the use of means whereby the adjustment of said sunshade or umbrella may be easily and quickly accomplished without the necessity of the rider dismounting.

The invention consists, essentially, of a holder having means for securing it to the bicycle-frame, a clamp for receiving and sup:

porting the handle of the sunshade or umbrella, and means whereby the latter is adjusted in various positions, to be described, and for thereafter locking the same in such adjusted positions.

The invention further consists in the novel details of construction and arrangement of parts, all of which will be hereinafter fully described, and particularly pointed outin the appended claims.

Figure 1 represents a sectional elevation of the front portion of the bicycle-frame having my invention applied thereto. Fig. 2 represents a central longitudinal section thereof, the bicycle-frame being omitted. Fig. 3 represents a detail elevation of a portion of my improved carrier. Fig. 4: represents a similar view, looking from the right side thereof and showing a portion of the carrier in section and in position to be adjusted.

Theextension 4 is perforated, as indicated at 6, to receive therein the finger f a clamp 8, the opposite end of said clamp being provided with an opening, through which and an opening in the extension 4 a screw 9 is passed, the latter being provided with a thumb-nut 10, by means of which the clamp 8 is retained in its proper position at the other side of the frame. This construction serves to admit of the reception of frames which may be of more or less The lowerend of the extension 4 is bent substantially at 'right angles to the carrier 2, and its extremity is provided with a segmental extension 11, adapted to bear against the steering-post of the frame, said segmental portion being provided with a strap 12, which encircles said steering-post and is secured by a buckle 13, as seen in Fig. 1.

l4 designates a circular block securely fastened within tube or cylinder 3, the upper face of said block being provided with crownteeth 15,which latter engage with similar teeth 16, formed upon the lower extremity of a revoluble plug 17, the latter having a downwardlyprojecting rod 18, which passes through an opening in the block 14, and its lower end is threaded to receive thereon a nut or washer 19, between which and the block 14 is interposed a spring 20. The spring 20 serves to keep the teeth 16 of the plug 17 in constant engagement with the teeth 15 of the block 14, and thus a rotative movement of the plug 17 is prevented. The upper end of the plug 17 is provided with a plurality of segmental teeth 21, which are arranged upon an extension 22, the latter being perforated to receive a pin 23, the ends of which pass through similar perforations 24, provided in the legs 25 of the bifurcated block 26, said block 26 having a tubular extension 27 secured thereto. This tubular extension is designed to receive within it a latch 28, the lower end of which is provided with a tooth adapted to engage the segmental teeth 21 of the extension 22, while the upper end of said latch is bent in such a manner that the finger of the rider may readily grasp it when it is desired to release the tooth at the lower end from its engagement with said segmental teeth.

29 designates a collar arranged upon the latch 28, between which and the intermediate portion 30 of the extension 27 is interposed a spring 31, whose function is to keep the tooth at the lower end of the latch 28 in positive engagement with the segmental teeth of the extension 22.

The extension 27 of the carrier 2 is open, as clearly shown in Fig. 1, and a clamp 32 is arranged adjacent thereto, between which and the open upper extremity referred to the handle of the sunshade or umbrella is passed and is securely held against displacement.

The operation of my invention is as follows: The sunshade or umbrella having been prop-- erly secured to the upper extremity of the carrier 2, as described, and it is desired to give any desired inclination thereto, the finger-latch 28 is operated to release its tooth from engagement with the segmental teeth of the extension 22 of the plug 17, which will thus enable the tubular extension 27 to be moved upon its pivot 23 so as to assume the position shown in dotted lines in Fig. 2 or any other position within its radius, as will be evident. While in this position, it may be desirable to move the sunshade or unibrella so as to bring it in front or to either side of the rider, which is readily accomplished by raising the upper position of the carrier 2, so as to bring the teeth 16 of the plug. 17 out of engagement with teeth 15 of the circular block 14, so as to assume the position shown in Fig. 4:, in which position the plug 17 may be rotated within the upper end of the tube or cylinder 3 until the desired adjustment has been made, after which the spring 20 will serve to bring said teeth into engagement again and thereby lock the parts against further movement.

The extension 4 of the carrier 2 is preferably formed of malleable iron in order that it may be readily bent to conform to the varying shapes of bicycle-frames and to permit of the same being adjusted to the frame with a greater degree of accuracy.

It will be observed from the foregoing that my invention provides in a very simple and inexpensive manner a sunshade or umbrella carrier for bicycles which is particularly well adapted for the purposesintended, which by reason of its simplicity of construction and the ready manner in which the same may be adjusted make it a desirable adj unct to bicycles of all descriptions. 1

A sunshade or umbrella carrier for bicy cles comprising a tubular support having an extension provided with a concavity adapted to receive one side of the bicycle-frame, the lower end of said extension being bent at substantially right angles thereto and provided with a segmental terminal adapted to bear against the steering-post, a strap to secure said segmental portion in place, a clamp adjacent. to said concaved portion of the support, a screw and thumb nut adapted to secure said clamp in place, a toothed block secured within said support, a plug having corresponding teeth adapted to engage therewith, a depending rod secured to said plug and passing through an opening in said toothed block, a washer or nut for said rod, an interposed spring whereby said teeth are held in positive engagement, a segmental toothed extensionhaving pivotally secured thereto a tubular extension, the latter being open at its upper extremity and a clamp arranged adjacent to said open portion and adapted to secure the handle of the sunshade or umbrella, a spring-retained latch adapted to engage the teeth to said segmental extension and hold the same in adjusted position.
