This invention relates to closure valves for dispensing devices such as tubes, for example, tooth paste tubes, oil discharge valves and the like.
The closure according to the invention comprises essentially a valve operable by rotation of a cap and presented by a hemisphere the equatorial plane of which is oblique to a through passage formed in the hemisphere or alternatively a vertical slot in the outer cap and projection in the hemisphere and abuts against the inclined face of a cooperating member unitary with the neck of the tube, the arrangement being such that, when the valve is rotated, the passage is movable into and out of register with the discharge aperture or apertures.
A projection engageable with a slot in the hemisphere and with a recess in the cap, or vice versa, operatively connects the hemisphere with the cap while permitting rocking movement of the hemisphere relatively tothe cap sufficient to open and to close the passage.
In the accompanying drawings constituting a part hereof and in which like reference characters indicate like parts;
Figure 1 is a vertical cross-sectional view, some parts being shown in elevation of one form of the valve .closure devices according to the invention. Fig. 2 is a plan view thereof. Fig. 3 is a plan view of the hemisphere. Fig. 4 is a vertical cross-sectional View of the cap and Figs. 5 to 'Z are detail views of the complementary parts of the valve. Fig. 8 is a vertical cross-sectional view illustrating a modified formzof construction and Figs. 9, 9a, 10 and 11 are detail views of the parts shown in Fig. 8. Fig. 12 is a vertical cross-sectional View of a further modification of my invention. Figs. 13 and 14 are views partly in section and partly in elevation of parts of the device of Fig. 12, and Fig. 15 is an elevational view of the locking ring.
As illustrated in Figs. 1 to '7, the valve, which is operable by rotation of a cap 9, comprises a hemisphere II] the equatorial plane of which is oblique to a through passage II formed in the hemisphere and abuts against the inclined face of the cooperating member l2 unitary with the neck of the tube (not shown), the arrangement being such that, when the valve is rotated, the passage H is movable into and out of register with the discharge aperture 13.
A projection- !4 is fitted into a recess I! in the interior of cap 9 and is engageable with a slot l6 partly in the hemisphere l0 and partly in the member t2 and operative-1y connects the hemisphere in with the cap 9 while permitting rocking movement of the hemisphere I0 relatively to the cap 9 sufiicient to open and to close the passage H.
The cap 9 is attached to the member l2 by 5 means of a resilient ring I8 engaging registering annular recesses I9; in the cap 9 and in the member l2, respectively. The member I2 is ro vided with a screw-threaded portion adapted-ta be secured to the tube or the like.
An alternative form of closure is shown in Figs. 8 to 15 which is the reverse of the crank movement as applied by the aid of a supplementary projection engaging with a slot in the hemisphere.
There is provided a hollow cap 9 having an 15 opening i3 at the upper end and a vertical slot 22 on the inside thereof. The cap is provided with a flange 25 at its lower end. A substantially hemispherical valve member I0, having a central opening H at an angle to the lower surface 26 20 thereof and a projection 2| adapted to fit into groove or slot 22, is held within said cap. A lower member i2 has an opening II corresponding to opening it of member l6, and a flange 21 on the lower end thereof. The upper surface 28 there- 25 of is at the same angle as surface 26 of member It. Disc 29 has an opening 30 and the flange 23 is orimped over flange 25 to hold the parts together. In the position shown in Fig. 8' the openings I I- are in alinement in axial position to 30 allow the contents of the tube to be dispensed.
Upon the rotation of the cap 9 the slot 22 engagesprojection 2 l' and mov es the hemisphere t0 over the surface 28 of member l2, causing the opening I l of member ID to assume a position at an angle to the vertical to such an extent as to close the passage.
This is accomplished by the rotation of the cap 9 the vertical slot 22' or which engages the projection 21 of member Hi, causing the latter to'40- move with the cap. The movement of bearing surface 26 of member ill over the corresponding surface- 28 of stationary member I2, causes projection 21 to move upwardly in slot 22 and results in a tilting of member 10. This displaces the opening it of member I!) to the right in Fig. 8 so that it is no longer in alinement with opening [3 of cap 9, thus efiecting closure of the de vice, and means are usually provided for preventing further rotation of the cap. Upon reverse rotation of the cap, member ID moves in the opposite direction until openings H and F3 are again in alinement.-
The modification shown in Figs. 12-15 is quite similar to that of Figs. 8-11. In place of the plate 29 a different means is used to lock the parts together. The cap 9 is provided with a groove 24 in a horizontal position near the lower end thereof. The members In and I2 are fitted intothe cap, the member l2 not having any flange as shown in Fig. 14. A split ring l8 of spring metal is sprung into groove 24 holding the parts together.
Although I have described my invention setting forth several embodiments thereof, it is to be understood that the invention is not limited thereto as it will be apparent to those skilled in the art that other modifications may be made therein within the spirit of my invention, which is to be broadly construed and not to be limited except by the claims appended hereto.
I claim:
1. A closure for dispensing devices comprising a cap having an orifice therein, a valve member therein having a substantially hemi-spherical shape, an opening therein, the lower face thereof constituting a bearing surface, a stationary member having a corresponding bearing surface at an angle to the axis of said closure, means for retaining said cap and valve member in movable relation, and cooperating means whereby upon rotation of said cap said valve member will move so that said opening and orifice are in or out of register.
2. A closure for dispensing devices comprising a cap having an orifice therein, a valve member therein having a substantially hemi-spherical shape, an opening therein, the lower face thereof constituting a bearing surface, a stationary member having a corresponding bearing surface at an angle to the axis of said closure, an opening in said stationary member in alinement with said orifice, means'for retaining said cap and valve member in movable relation, and cooperating means whereby upon rotation of said cap said valve member will move so that said opening and orifice are in or out of register.
3. A closure for dispensing devices comprising a cap having an orifice therein, a valve member therein having a substantially hemi-spherical shape, an opening therein, the lower face thereof constituting a bearing surface, a stationary member having a corresponding bearing surface at an angle to the axis of said closure, means for retaining said cap and valve member in movable relation, and a cooperating groove and projection whereby upon rotation of said cap said valve member will move so that said opening and orifice are in or out of register.
4. A closure for dispensing devices comprising a cap having an orifice therein, a valve member therein having a substantially hemi-spherical shape, an opening therein, the lower face thereof constituting a bearing surface, a stationary member having a corresponding bearing surface at an angle to the axis of said closure, means for retaining said cap and valve member in movable relation, and cooperating means whereby upon rotation of said cap said valve member will move so that said opening and orifice are in or out of register, said cooperating means comprising a groove in said cap and a projection in said valve member.
5. A closure for dispensing devices comprising a cap having an orifice therein, a valve member therein having a substantially hemi-spherical shape, an opening therein, the lower face thereof constituting a bearing surface, a stationary member having a corresponding bearing surface at an angle to the axis of said closure, means for retaining said cap and valve member in movable relation, and cooperating means whereby upon rotation of said cap said valve member will move so that said opening and orifice are in or out of register, said cooperating means comprising a groove in said valve member and a projection in said cap.
6. A closure for dispensing devices comprising a cap having an orifice therein, a valve member therein having a substantially hemi-spherical 10 shape, an opening therein, the lower face thereof constituting a bearing surface, a stationary member having a corresponding bearing surface at an angle to the axis of said closure, means for retaining said cap and valve in movable relation, and a cooperating member so located that upon rotation of said cap said valve member will move so that said opening and orifice are in or out of register.
7. A closure for dispensing devices comprising a cap having an orifice therein, a valve member therein, an opening in said valve, the lower face of said valve being at an angle to said opening, said face constituting a bearing surface, means for retaining said cap and valve in movable relation and a cooperating member so located that upon rotation of said cap said valve member will move so that said opening and orifice are in or out of register.
8. A closure for dispensing devices comprising a cap having an orifice therein, a valve member therein, an opening in said valve, the lower face of said valve being at an angle to said opening, means for retaining said cap and valve in movable relation and a cooperating member so 10- cated that upon rotation of said cap said valve member will move so that said opening and orifice are in or out of register, an opening in said cooperating member, the upper face of said cooperating member being at an angle to said latter opening.
9. A closure for dispensing devices comprising a cap having an orifice therein, a valve member therein, an opening in said valve, the lower face of said valve being at an angle to said opening, means for retaining said cap and valve in m0vable relation and a cooperating member so located that upon rotation of said cap said valve member will move so that said opening and orifice are in or out of register, an opening in said cooperating member, the upper face of said cooperating member being at an angle to said latter opening, said angles being the same.
10. A closure for dispensing devices comprising a cap having an orifice therein, a valve member therein having a substantially hemi-spherical shape, an opening therein, the lower face thereof constituting a bearing surface, a stationary member having a corresponding bearing surface at an angle to the axis of said closure, means for retaining said cap and valve in movable relation, and. a cooperating member having a flange so located that upon rotation of said cap said valve member will move so that said opening and orifice are in or out of register, a flange on said cap, and a disk for holding said cap and cooperating member together clamped over said flanges to allow rotation of said cap relative to said cooperating member.

12. A closure for dispensing devices comprising a cap having an orifice therein, a valve member therein having a substantially hemi-spherical shape, an opening therein, the lower face thereof constituting a bearing surface, a stationary member having a corresponding bearing surface at an angle to the axis of said closure, means for retaining said cap and valve member in movable relation, and cooperating means whereby upon rotation of said cap said valve member will move so that said opening and orifice are in or out of register, and means for limiting said motion.
13. A closure for dispensing devices comprising a cap having an orifice therein, a valve member therein having a substantially hemi-spherical shape, an opening therein, the lower face thereof constituting a bearing surface, a stationary member having a corresponding bearing surface at an angle to the axis of said closure, means for retaining said cap and valve member in movable relation, and cooperating means whereby upon rotation of said cap said valve member will move so that said opening and orifice are in or out of register, and means for limiting said motion so that at one end of said motion said closure is open and at the other end is closed.

A closure for dispensing devices comprising a cap having an orifice therein, a valve member therein having a substantially hemi-spherical shape, an opening therein, the lower face thereof constituting a bearing surface, a stationary member having a corresponding bearing surface at an angle to the axis of said closure, means for retaining said cap and valve in movable relation, and a cooperating member so located that upon rotation of said cap said valve member will move so that said opening and orifice are in or out of register, said cooperating member being adapted to be secured to a tube or the like.

A closure for dispensing devices comprising a cap having an orifice therein, a valve member therein having a substantially hemi-spherical shape, an opening therein, the lower face thereof constituting a bearing surface, a stationary member having a corresponding bearing surface at an angle to the axis of said closure, means for retaining said cap and valve in movable relation, and a cooperating member so located that upon rotation of said cap said valve member will move so that said opening and orifice are in or out of register, and opening in said cooperating member in alinement with said orifice, said openings being alined in an axial position when said closure is open.
