My invention relates more particularly to disklike sheet metal structures as for example and more especially those forming the heads of reels provided for the winding thereon of electric cable or the like.
My primary object is to provide a construction oi' the character above referred to which while presenting the desired strength, stiffness and durability may be manufactured at less cost and be of lighter weight than such structures as hitherto provided; and other objects as will be manifest from the following description.
Referring to the accompanying drawings:
Figure l is a view in elevation of a reel embodying my invention.
Figure 2 is an end View of the reel with a portion thereof broken away to disclose a detail of construction.
Figure 3 is an enlarged broken longitudinal sectional View of the reel, the section being taken at the line 3 3 on Fig. 2 and viewed in the direction of the arrows.
Figure 4 is a fragmentary sectional View taken at the line 4-4 on Fig. 2 and viewed in the direction of the arrows; and l Figure 5, a similar view taken at the line 5 5 on Fig. 2 and viewed in the direction of the arrows.
Referring to the particular illustrated embodiment of my invention, the reel as shown comprises a hub portion t sho-wn as formed of a sheet metal drum with its ends inwardly deflected to form annular flanges l', and sheet metal heads 8 positioned at the ends of the hub 6 and secured thereto as hereinafter described.
Each head 8 is formed of spaced apart disk-like sheet metal members 9 and it) centrally .apertured as represented at il and l2, respectively, to receive an arbor tube i3 secured in place as for eX- arnple by welding these parts together as indicated at lll and l5.
The member 9 is shown as formed of a substantially flat sheet metal disk which, in the reel construction, constitutes the inner face of the head.
The member i@ comprises an annular series of sheet metal segments i6 secured together as hereinafter described and forming in effect a sectional disk.
Interposed between the members 9 and l@ are reinforcing ribs il which radiate from the central axis of the head, these ribs being of wedge shape as shown in Fig. 3, tapering toward their outer extremities and engaging at their opposite longitudinal edges with the members 9 and I@ and in effect forming braces, the head structure thus formed being of general at cone form as illustrated.
The ribs Il in the particular construction shown are formed integrally with the segments 5 I5, being provided as flanges extending inwardly along the radially disposed edges of the segments. Preferably, and as shown, the flange along one edge of each segment and represented at I8 is doubled back as represented at I9 to present an l0 outwardly facing channel or groove 29 into which the flange on the other edge of the adjacent segment and represented at 2l, extends, whereby each rib I'l is formed of three thicknesses of metal imparting thereto great resistance to crushl5 ing.
The members 9 and I0 and hub 6 are secured together by tie rods shown as bolts 22 which extend through openings 23 and 24 in the flanges 'l and the disk 9, respectively, and openings in the segments IS; the heads and nuts provided on these bolts at their opposite ends engaging with the outer members I9, respectively, of the heads 8, as illustrated of the nut 25 in Figs. 3 and 5, to effect the desired clamping action. 25
It is desirable that the heads and nuts on the bolts 22 be inset relative to the plane of the outer surfaces of the members Il] to avoid undesirable projections thereon, and to this end the portions of the members l0 at which these head-forming 30 parts of the bolts engage, are formed of embossed washers 26 set into openings 21 in the segments I6 and lapping, at peripheral flanges 28 thereon, the walls of the openings 2l to which they are secured as by welding them thereto as indicated at 29.
The washers 2B are so positioned relative to the ribs il, as shown, that portions of the flanges 28 of the washers lap the joints between adjacent segments I6 and thus extend over the outer edges of the ribs, whereby the stiffness of the ribs Il is availed of in resisting the stresses produced in the tightened condition of the bolts 22.
Reels of this character are commonly rolled I along the iloor and to provide desirable tread surfaces at the peripheries of the heads I preferably curl the peripheral portions of the disks 9 around reinforcing metal rings 30, as represented at 3|, with the peripheral portions of the segments I5 50 interposed between portions of the rings 30 and the disks 9, and the curled portions 3l and the peripheral edges of the segments it tack-welded together as indicated at 32.
As will be understood from the foregoing, the
heads 8 while being of comparatively light Weight are highly resistant to the various stresses to which they may be subjected in use tending to distort them, the ribs I'l serving as compression members resisting stresses tending to deflect the peripheral portions of the heady outwardly and as tension members resisting stresses tending to deflect these portions of the head inwardly.l
While I have illustrated and described a particular construction embodying my invention, I do not wish to be understood as intending to limit it thereto as the same may be variously modied and altered Without departing from the spirit of my invention. Thus, by way of example, the reinforcing ribs may be omitted, in which case the member l0, of general conical shape, would preferably be formed either of a single sheet of metal or of sections connected together.
What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is:
A reel comprising a hub member, heads at the ends of said hub member, said heads being formed of spaced apart members and ribs interposed between said spaced apart members, the outer ones of said spaced apart members containing openings, embossed washers in said openings and having flange portions which extend crosswise of adjacent ribs and overlap the outer edges of the latter, and tie rods connecting t0- gether said hub member and heads and extending into said washers and having head portions lol5 cated in said washers.
RALPH B. HAYWARD.
