Abstract
A level apparatus for promoting balanced lifting of an object includes a first material portion, a second material portion, a fastening mechanism formed on at least one of the first material portion or the second material portion for providing a temporary bond between the first material portion and the second material portion, and a level component disposed through an opening within the first material portion. The level component includes a level disposed within a level housing structure. The first material portion and second material portion are configured to wrap around the object such that the level is exposed to a user lifting the object.
Description
- The present disclosure is generally related to fitness equipment, and more particularly, to level apparatuses for promoting balanced lifting of objects.
- Individuals can utilize fitness equipment to increase muscle mass, improve cardiovascular fitness, and/or aid with muscle rehabilitation. Free weight exercise equipment, referred to as “free weights,” can include barbells, dumbbells, etc. Free weight exercises performed using free weights, also referred to as movements or lifts, allow for more natural movement as compared to non-free-weight exercises performed using exercise machines. As such, in addition to the primary or target muscle groups, free weight exercises generally recruit stabilizer muscles for stability and balance during multi-plane movement. Therefore, free weights can be used to reduce muscle imbalances over time. Accordingly, in addition to increasing strength, muscle mass and overall fitness, free weight movements can also improve balance and posture by developing stabilizer muscle groups.

- In accordance with an embodiment, a level apparatus for promoting balanced lifting of an object is provided. The level apparatus includes a first material portion, a second material portion, a fastening mechanism formed on at least one of the first material portion or the second material portion for providing a temporary bond between the first material portion and the second material portion, and a level component disposed through an opening within the first material portion. The level component includes a level disposed within a level housing structure. The first material portion and second material portion are configured to wrap around the object such that the level is exposed to a user lifting the object.
- In accordance with another embodiment, a weight lifting apparatus is provided. The weight lifting apparatus includes a bar, and a level apparatus attached to the bar for promoting balanced lifting of the bar. The level apparatus includes a first material portion, a second material portion, a fastening mechanism formed on at least one of the first material portion or the second material portion for providing a temporary bond between the first material portion and the second material portion, and a level component disposed through an opening within the first material portion. The level component includes a level disposed within a level housing structure. The first material portion and second material portion are configured to wrap around the bar such that the level is exposed to a user lifting the bar.

FIG. 10B depicts a perspective view of a level apparatus wrapped around a bar, in accordance with some embodiments. - A barbell is a piece of fitness equipment that is generally used for weight training (e.g., bodybuilding, weightlifting, powerlifting). A barbell is generally formed of a metal bar having a central portion that includes grip regions, and an outer portion at each end of the central portion for receiving weighted plates. A barbell can have a length ranging from about 1.2 meters (m) (4 feet (ft)) to about 2.4 m (8 ft). For example, a standard barbell has a length of about 2.13 m (7 ft) and a mass of about 20.41 kilograms (kg) (about 45 pounds). The diameter of the central portion can range from about 25 millimeters (mm) (0.98 inches (in)) to about 50 mm (1.96 in). Cross-hatch patterns can be knurled within the grip region to assist with grip. Knurling generally refers to a process of forming lines (e.g., straight lines, angled lines, or crossed lines) into a material. Weighted plates can be added or removed based on the desired total weight for the particular barbell exercise. Examples of barbell exercises include bench press, overhead press, squats, deadlifts, bent-over rows, etc.
- Barbell exercises typically recruit multiple muscle groups in a symmetric fashion on both left and right sides of the body with respect to the centerline of the body. For example, the traditional flat bench press recruits, inter alia, the left pectoralis major, the right pectoralis major, the left triceps and the right triceps. It is generally advised to perform lifts with proper form to enable even or balanced lifting across both sides of the body. Uneven lifting can lead to muscle imbalances, in which one side of the body becomes stronger than another, and the stronger side begins to overcompensate for the weaker side. Moreover, muscle imbalances can contribute to progress plateaus that limit the ability to lift heavier weights as the weaker side cannot keep up with the stronger side. Therefore, uneven lifting can lead to increased risk of injury and reduced overall fitness. However, it can be challenging for an individual to determine whether he or she is lifting evenly without a spotter in real-time. This is particularly true for heavier lifts in which the individual may be more focused on lifting the weight than maintaining proper lifting form throughout.
- Aspects of the present disclosure address the above noted and other deficiencies by providing an apparatus for promoting balanced lifting of objects. In some embodiments, the apparatus can promote balanced lifting of bar-shaped objects (“bars”). One example of a bar is a barbell, although embodiments described herein can be implemented with respect to any suitable object. For example, the apparatus can include a specially-designed level embedded within a material having a first material portion and a second material portion, and the fitness level apparatus can be wrapped around a bar (e.g., barbell) designed to be lifted by an individual. In some embodiments, the material includes a synthetic rubber material. For example, the material can include a neoprene material. In some embodiments, the material includes leather. The material can be fastened around the bar using any suitable fastening mechanism.
- To allow for removal of the apparatus, the fastening mechanism can provide a temporary bond that can allow for simple unfastening after use. More specifically, the fastening mechanism can be formed on at least one of the first material portion or the second material portion for providing a temporary bond between the first material portion and the second material portion. For example, the fastening mechanism can be embodied as a hook-and-loop or touch fastening mechanism, where a first portion of the hook-and-loop fastening mechanism (e.g., the hook portion or the loop portion) can be attached to a first end of the first material portion, and a second portion of the hook-and-loop fastening mechanism (e.g., the loop portion or the hook portion) can be attached to a second end of the second material portion. As another example, the fastening mechanism can be embodied as a magnetic fastening mechanism, where a first portion of the magnetic fastening mechanism (e.g., a first magnetic strip) is attached to a first end of the first material portion, and a second portion of the magnetic fastening mechanism (e.g., a second magnetic strip) is attached to a second end of the second material portion.
- The level can be positioned to be visible to an individual during a lift, thereby providing the individual with a real-time indication with respect to whether the lift is uneven. More specifically, the level can include a bubble that will stay in the center of the level only if the bar is being evenly lifted on both sides. If the individual notices that the lift is uneven (e.g., the bubble of the level is off-center), the individual can adjust the lift in real-time to correct the imbalance. The level can also promote a more controlled lift by incentivizing the individual to smoothly lift the bar in order to keep the bubble toward the center of the level. Therefore, embodiments described herein can be used to reduce injury and improve lifting efficiency.

FIG. 1 depicts a top-down view of afirst material portion 100 of a level apparatus, in accordance with some embodiments. Thefirst material portion 100 can have a rectangular shape. Alternatively, thefirst material portion 100 may have other shapes, such as a triangular shape, a trapezium shape, a rhombus shape, an oval shape, and so on. In this illustrative example, thefirst material portion 100 has a square shape having a number ofsides including side 110 having a length “A.” In some embodiments, the length A ranges from about 5 inches to about 6 inches. For example, the length A can be about 5.5 inches. In some embodiments, thefirst material portion 100 is formed from a synthetic rubber material. For example, thefirst material portion 100 can be formed from a neoprene material. In some embodiments, thefirst material portion 100 is formed from leather. However, thefirst material portion 100 can be formed from any suitable material. As will be described in further detail below, a first portion of a fastening mechanism (e.g., a hook portion or a loop portion of a hook-and-loop fastening mechanism, a magnetic strip of a magnetic fastening mechanism) can be attached to an end of thefirst material portion 100. -
FIG. 2 depicts a top-down view of asecond material portion 200 of a level apparatus, in accordance with some embodiments. Similar to thefirst material portion 100 ofFIG. 1 , thesecond material portion 200 can have a rectangular shape. Alternatively, thesecond material portion 200 may have other shapes, such as a triangular shape, a trapezium shape, a rhombus shape, an oval shape, and so on. In this illustrative example, thesecond material portion 200 has a square shape having a number of sides including sides 210-1 and 210-2 having the length “A.” In some embodiments, length A ranges from about 5 inches to about 6 inches. For example, length A can be about 5.5 inches. In some embodiments, thesecond material portion 200 is formed from a synthetic rubber material. For example, thesecond material portion 200 can be formed from a neoprene material. In some embodiments, thesecond material portion 200 is formed from leather. Thesecond material portion 200 can be formed from the same material as thefirst material portion 100, or a different material from thefirst material portion 100. As will be described in further detail below, a second portion of a fastening mechanism (e.g., a loop portion or a hook portion of a hook-and-loop fastening mechanism, a magnetic strip of a magnetic fastening mechanism) can be attached to an end of thesecond material portion 200. - As further shown, the
second material portion 200 further includes anopening 220. In some embodiments, and as shown, theopening 220 is a rectangular shaped opening defined by longsides including side 222 having a length “B” and shortsides including side 224 having a length “C”. However, theopening 220 can have any suitable shape in accordance with embodiments described herein. - The distance between the side 210-1 and the
side 222 is defined by a length “D” and the distance between the side 210-2 and theside 224 is defined by a length “E”. In some embodiments, the length B ranges from about 37 millimeters (mm) to about 47 mm. For example, length B can be about 42 mm. In some embodiments, the length C ranges from about 9 mm to about 15 mm. For example, length C can be about 12 mm. Length D is approximately half the difference between length A and length C. For example, if length A is about 5.5 inches and length C is about 12 mm (about 0.47 inch), then length D can be about 2.5 inches. Length E is approximately half the difference between length A and length B. For example, if length A is about 5.5 inches (139.7 mm) and length B is about 42 mm, then length E can be about 48.85 mm. -
FIGS. 3A-3C depict views of atop portion 300 of a level housing structure of a level apparatus, in accordance with some embodiments. More specifically,FIG. 3A depicts a top-down view of thetop portion 300,FIG. 3B depicts a perspective view of thetop portion 300 andFIG. 3C depicts a side view of thetop portion 300. As shown, thetop portion 300 is formed as a hollow half-cylinder having lateral surfaces includinglateral surface 310 having a length “F” and half-annular shapedbases including base 320 having an outer diameter “G1” and an inner diameter “G2”. Thetop portion 300 further includes alevel compartment 330 configured to hold a level, as will be described in further detail herein. In some embodiments, the length F ranges between about 60 mm to about 70 mm. In some embodiments, the outer diameter G1 ranges between about 30 mm to about 40 mm. In some embodiments, the inner diameter G2 ranges between about 32 mm to about 38 mm. Thelevel compartment 330 has dimensions suitable for inserting a level having particular dimensions, as will be described below with reference toFIGS. 5 and 8 , and insertion through theopening 220 of thesecond material portion 200. Thetop portion 300 can be formed from any suitable material in accordance with embodiments described herein. For example, thetop portion 300 can be formed of a plastic material. -
FIGS. 4A-4C depict views of abottom portion 400 of a level housing structure of a level apparatus, in accordance with some embodiments. More specifically,FIG. 4A depicts a top-down view of thebottom portion 400,FIG. 4B depicts a perspective view of thebottom portion 400 andFIG. 4C depicts a side view of thebottom portion 400. As shown, similar to thetop portion 300 ofFIGS. 3 , thebottom portion 400 is formed as a hollow half-cylinder having lateral surfaces includinglateral surface 410 having a length “H” and half-annular shapedbases including base 420 having an outer diameter “I1” and an inner diameter “I2”. In some embodiments, the length H ranges between about 55 mm to about 65 mm. In some embodiments, the outer diameter I1 ranges between about 28 mm to about 38 mm. In some embodiments, the inner diameter I2 ranges between about 30 mm to about 36 mm. As further shown, thebottom portion 400 includes adivot 430. Thedivot 430 has dimensions suitable for receiving a level having particular dimensions, as will be described below with reference toFIGS. 5 and 8 , and insertion through theopening 220 of thesecond material portion 200. Thebottom portion 400 can be formed from any suitable material in accordance with embodiments described herein. For example, thebottom portion 400 can be formed of a plastic material. Moreover, thebottom portion 400 can formed from a same material as thetop portion 300 ofFIGS. 3 or a different from than thetop portion 300 ofFIGS. 3 . -
FIG. 5 depicts a cross-sectional view of alevel 500, in accordance with some embodiments. More specifically, thelevel 500 can have a cylindrical shape, as will be described in further detail below with reference toFIG. 8 , such that thelevel 500 has a rectangular cross-sectional shape. As shown, thelevel 500 has lateral surfaces includinglateral surface 510 having a length “J” andbases including base 520 have a diameter “K”. In some embodiments, the length J ranges between about 35 mm to about 45 mm. In some embodiments, the diameter K ranges between about 7 mm to about 12 mm. - The
level 500 further includes abubble 530 having an oblong or oval shape. Thebubble 530 is configured to move within a liquid housed in thelevel 500. More specifically, the bubble is configured to move between the bases of thelevel 500. The position of thebubble 530 indicates whether the level 500 (and thus the object to which thelevel 500 is attached) is aligned with respect to a particular plane (e.g., horizontal plane). For example, thebubble 530 will be located substantially toward the center if thelevel 500 is substantially aligned with the plane, while thebubble 530 will move toward the ends of thelevel 500 based on an amount of deviation from alignment (e.g., thelevel 500 is tilted at an angle relative to the plane). - As further shown, the
level 500 can include marker regions 540-1 and 540-2 defining acentral region 550 indicative of a range of acceptable positions for thebubble 530. The marker regions 540-1 and 540-2 can be customized to be narrower or wider, depending on the amount of deviation tolerance desired for a particular application. In some embodiments, the marker regions 540-1 and 540-2 have a length ranging from about 1 mm to about 4 mm. For example, the marker regions 540-1 and 540-2 can have a length of about 2 mm. In some embodiments, thecentral region 550 has a length ranging from about 10 mm to about 20 mm. -
FIG. 6 depicts a top-down view of afirst portion 600 of a fastening mechanism of a level apparatus, in accordance with some embodiments. Thefirst portion 600 is configured to create a temporary bond when placed in contact with a second portion of the fastening mechanism, as will be described in further detail below with reference toFIG. 7 . In this illustrative example, thefirst portion 600 is a hook portion of a hook-and-loop fastening mechanism. However, the fastening mechanism can be any suitable fastening mechanism in accordance with embodiments described herein (e.g., magnetic fastening mechanism). - The
hook portion 600 includes a number of tiny hooks that catch into a number of tiny loops of a corresponding loop portion of the hook-and-loop fastening mechanism. As shown, thehook portion 600 has a rectangular shape having longsides including side 610 defining a length “A” of the hook portion 600 (similar to the length A of thematerial portions FIGS. 1 and 2 ), and shortsides including side 620 defining a width “L” of thehook portion 600. In some embodiments, the width L ranges from about 0.5 inch to about 1.5 inches. For example, the width L can be about 1 inch. -
FIG. 7 depicts a top-down view of asecond portion 700 of a fastening mechanism of a level apparatus, in accordance with some embodiments. As mentioned above, thesecond portion 700 is configured to create a temporary bond when placed in contact with a first portion of the fastening mechanism (e.g., thefirst portion 600 ofFIG. 6 ). In this illustrative example, thesecond portion 700 is a loop portion of a hook-and-loop fastening mechanism. However, the fastening mechanism can be any suitable fastening mechanism in accordance with embodiments described herein. Examples of fastening mechanisms that may be used include one or more magnetic fastening mechanism, one or more buckles, one or more snaps or studs, one or more zippers, one or more toggle fasteners, one or more squeeze buckles, one or more clasps, one or more sliders, one or more G-hooks, and so on. - In one embodiment, the
loop portion 700 includes a number of tiny loops that receive a number of tiny hooks of a corresponding hook portion of the hook-and-loop fastening mechanism (e.g., thehook portion 600 ofFIG. 6 ). Similar to thehook portion 600 ofFIG. 6 , theloop portion 700 has a rectangular shape having longsides including side 710 defining a length “A” of theloop portion 700 and shortsides including side 720 defining a width “L” of the loop portion 700 (similar to the length A and the width L described above). -
FIG. 8 is a diagram 800 illustrating the formation of alevel component 810 of a level apparatus, in accordance with some embodiments. As shown, thetop portion 300 of the level housing structure, thebottom portion 400 of the level housing structure and thelevel 500 are assembled to form thelevel component 810. Thelevel 500 is secured within thelevel component 810 at least due to the insertion within thelevel compartment 330 and contact with thedivot 430. -
FIG. 9A depicts a top-down view of alevel apparatus 900 andFIG. 9B depicts a bottom-up view of thelevel apparatus 900, in accordance with some embodiments. As shown, thelevel apparatus 900 includes thefirst material portion 100 and thelevel component 810 formed through theopening 220 described above with reference toFIG. 2 . Theloop portion 700 of the hook-and-loop fastening mechanism is formed on one side of thefirst material portion 100 parallel to the length of thelevel component 810. Thehook portion 600 of the hook-and-loop fastening mechanism is formed on one side of thesecond material portion 200 corresponding to the opposite side of theloop portion 700. However, in alternative embodiments, thehook portion 700 can be formed on thefirst material portion 100 and theloop portion 700 can be formed on thesecond material portion 200. -
FIG. 10A depicts a side view of aweight lifting apparatus 1000 andFIG. 10B depicts a perspective view of theweight lifting apparatus 1000, in accordance with some embodiments. As shown, theweight lifting apparatus 1000 includes thelevel apparatus 900 wrapped around anobject 1010. In this illustrative example, theobject 1010 is a bar. In some embodiments, theobject 1010 is a barbell. Thelevel apparatus 900, including thefirst material portion 100 and thesecond material portion 200, are configured to wrap around theobject 1010 such that the level is exposed, or visible, to a user of theobject 1010 throughout the entire movement of theobject 1010. For example, when theobject 1010 is lifted, a user can determine an evenness of the lift by observing the position of the bubble within the level housed inside of thelevel apparatus 900. If the bubble stays within the region defined by markers illustrated on the level, then the user knows that the lift is approximately even on both sides, and thus efficient and safe. However, if the bubble veers outside of the region defined by the markers illustrated on the level, then the user knows that the lift is uneven and that an adjustment should be made to the lift to correct the imbalance and thus improve efficiency and/or avoid injury. - Embodiments described herein have described a level apparatus that is inserted into a material configured to be wrapped around an object. However, in alternative embodiments, the level apparatus can include a magnetic level housing configured to be magnetically secured to the bar. In alternative embodiments, the level apparatus can include a level housing configured to be secured to the bar using an elastic material (e.g., elastic string). In alternative embodiments, the level apparatus can be a hinged level apparatus including level housing components secured via a hinge-and-latch mechanism.
- Although the operations of the methods herein are shown and described in a particular order, the order of the operations of each method may be altered so that certain operations may be performed in an inverse order or so that certain operation may be performed, at least in part, concurrently with other operations. In certain implementations, instructions or sub-operations of distinct operations may be in an intermittent and/or alternating manner.

Claims (20)
1. A level apparatus for promoting balanced lifting of an object, comprising:
a first material portion;
a second material portion;
a fastening mechanism formed on at least one of the first material portion or the second material portion for providing a temporary bond between the first material portion and the second material portion; and
a level component disposed through an opening within the first material portion, wherein the level component comprises a level disposed within a level housing structure, and wherein the first material portion and second material portion are configured to wrap around the object such that the level is exposed to a user lifting the object.
2. The level apparatus of claim 1 , wherein the first material portion and the second material portion are each comprised of a synthetic rubber material.
3. The level apparatus of claim 1 , wherein the first material portion and the second material portion are each comprised of leather.
4. The level apparatus of claim 1 , wherein the first material portion and the second material portion each comprise a side having a length between about 5 inches to about 6 inches.
5. The level apparatus of claim 1 , wherein the opening is rectangular shaped opening having a first side and a second side.
6. The level apparatus of claim 5 , wherein the first side has a length between about 37 millimeters (mm) to about 47 mm, and the second side has a length between about 9 mm to about 15 mm.
7. The level apparatus of claim 1 , wherein the level housing structure comprises:
a bottom portion having a divot underneath the level; and
a top portion having a level compartment for holding the level;
wherein the bottom portion and the top portion are each formed from a hollow half-cylinder;
wherein the level has a cylindrical shape; and
wherein the divot is formed on an upper surface of the bottom portion and the level compartment is formed on an upper surface of the top portion.
8. The level apparatus of claim 7 , wherein:
the bottom portion has a lateral surface having a length between about 55 millimeters (mm) to about 65 mm and a base having an outer diameter between about 28 mm to about 35 mm;
the top portion has a lateral surface having a length between about 60 mm to about 70 mm and a base having an outer diameter between about 30 mm to about 40 mm.
9. The level apparatus of claim 8 , wherein the level has a lateral surface having a length between about 35 mm to about 45 mm and a base having a diameter between about 7 mm to about 12 mm.
10. The level apparatus of claim 1 , wherein the fastening mechanism is a hook-and-loop fastening mechanism having a first portion formed on a first end of the first material portion and a second portion formed on a second end of the second material portion.
11. A weight lifting apparatus comprising:
a bar; and
a level apparatus attached to the bar for promoting balanced lifting of the bar, wherein the level apparatus comprises:
a first material portion;
a second material portion;
a fastening mechanism formed on at least one of the first material portion or the second material portion for providing a temporary bond between the first material portion and the second material portion; and
a level component disposed through an opening within the first material portion, wherein the level component comprises a level disposed within a level housing structure, and wherein the first material portion and second material portion are configured to wrap around the bar such that the level is exposed to a user lifting the bar.
12. The weight lifting apparatus of claim 11 , wherein the first material portion and the second material portion are each comprised of a synthetic rubber material.
13. The weight lifting apparatus of claim 11 , wherein the first material portion and the second material portion are each comprised of leather.
14. The weight lifting apparatus of claim 11 , wherein the first material portion and the second material portion each comprise a side having a length between about 5 inches to about 6 inches.
15. The weight lifting apparatus of claim 11 , wherein the opening is rectangular shaped opening having a first side and a second side.
16. The weight lifting apparatus of claim 15 , wherein the first side has a length between about 37 millimeters (mm) to about 47 mm, and the second side has a length between about 9 mm to about 15 mm.
17. The weight lifting apparatus of claim 11 , wherein the level housing structure comprises:
a bottom portion having a divot underneath the level; and
a top portion having a level compartment for holding the level;
wherein the bottom portion and the top portion are each formed from a hollow half-cylinder;
wherein the level has a cylindrical shape; and
wherein the divot is formed on an upper surface of the bottom portion and the level compartment is formed on an upper surface of the top portion.
18. The weight lifting apparatus of claim 17 , wherein:
the bottom portion has a lateral surface having a length between about 55 millimeters (mm) to about 65 mm and a base having an outer diameter between about 28 mm to about 35 mm;
the top portion has a lateral surface having a length between about 60 mm to about 70 mm and a base having an outer diameter between about 30 mm to about 40 mm.
19. The weight lifting apparatus of claim 18 , wherein the level has a lateral surface having a length between about 35 mm to about 45 mm and a base having a diameter between about 7 mm to about 12 mm.
20. The weight lifting apparatus of claim 11 , wherein the fastening mechanism is a hook-and-loop fastening mechanism having a first portion formed on a first end of the first material portion and a second portion formed on a second end of the second material portion.
