Abstract

A hair brush with a slideable brush head that allows the brush head to be positioned on either end of the elongated handle to thereby providing ease of use by both right handed or left handed users. The elongated handle arrests the brush head in any desired position via the use of activating flanges that depress an activating rod held in place with compression springs with a cam and arresting balls in the center of the handle. When the activating rod is depressed, the cam is displaced by the compression springs which in turn releases the arresting balls creating a smooth surface of travel for the brush head therealong. The brush head may also be removed from the handle, if so desired, so that a brush head of a different circumference but the same inner diameter may be used. The handle is streamlined and elliptical in shape and contains rubber cushions for easier grip.

  • BACKGROUND OF THE INVENTION Field of the Invention
  • The present invention relates, generally, to the field of hairbrushes, and specifically toward a hairbrush having a slideable brush-head for flexibility of use.
  • Background of the Prior Art
  • Hairbrushes are extremely conventional for use in grooming hair as well in styling the hair. Typically, a hairbrush is constructed of a handle and a brush head having bristles thereon of varying thicknesses and stiffness for use with a variety of hair types to achieve various styles.
  • U.S. Pat. No. 1,951,023 discloses' a brush including a handle having a mass of sponge rubber secured thereto. The handle is disclosed to be collapsible and is composed of two or more telescoping members one of which is embedded within the mass of the sponge rubber with an inner member being slideable into and out of an embedded member to form other convenient extending handles.
  • U.S. Pat. No. 2,641,012 illustrates a brush that has telescoping handle parts that form extendable sections of a hairbrush One part of the handle section has a larger diameter while other sections are progressively smaller whereby the various sections can telescope within each other to form a longer or shorter handle.
  • U.S. Pat. No. 3,690,331 discloses a combined brush and comb including a body having tufts on an exterior surface of the body and a comb that may be adjusted for various angles with respect to the body of the brush and included are retractable handles. In one embodiment the handles are extendible from either end of the brush body to facilitate its use by either a right-handed or a left-handed person.
  • U.S. Pat. Nos. 8,353,076, 8,756,744, 8,752,231 and 8,782,842 to the instant inventor Asta describe a variety of hairbrushes with slideable brush heads. However, there were some shortcomings to these inventions, which the instant invention seeks to overcome, including a handle that was not comfortable for use due to short length, wide diameter and mechanical parts along the handle that were used as guides that were not comfortable to the user.
  • It is the object of the instant invention to provide a hair brush with multiples sized slideable brush heads that has an increased handle length, a decreased handle diameter and an improved shape that provides ease of use and comfort that was not possible with the devices of the prior art, including the prior patents to the instant inventor.
  • SUMMARY OF THE INVENTION
  • The inventive concept of the instant invention hereby disclosed is a specific hairbrush that includes a handle upon which a grooming roller can be moved from one end of the handle to the other or stopped in the middle to all two hands for rolling, depending on the needs of the beautician due to styling requirements or mere left- or right-handedness. The concept also allows for the grooming roller to be moved from one end to the other, or removed altogether, during styling and or storage, in order to provide a space for another hairbrush having a different circumferential size or different brushing elements as long as the inner diameter remains the same so as to conform to the outer diameter of the handle.
  • The preferred embodiment of the instant invention encompasses a hair grooming device comprising: a brush head that is substantially round, having a first end and a second end and having a hollow elliptical center; an elongated handle having an exterior top half, an exterior bottom half, an interior created by the attachment of said exterior top half with said exterior bottom half, a first end and a second end wherein said brush head is movable between said first end of said elongated handle and said second end of said elongated handle along said exterior top half and bottom half wherein said brush head has the same inner elliptical diameter as said elongated handle; a first aperture in said top half substantially halfway along the length of said handle; a second aperture in said bottom half substantially halfway along the length of said handle wherein when said top half and said bottom half are connected a first opening and a second opening are created, both said first and second openings being positioned substantially on opposing sides of said handle substantially halfway along the length of said handle; a first activating rod extending from said first end of said elongated handle and having a first activating flange proximate said first end and a first activating clevis proximate said handle center; a second activating rod extending from said second end of said elongated handle and having a second activating flange proximate said second end and a second activating clevis proximate said handle center; a scissor-style spring having doubly opposing inclined planes and being positioned between said first activating rod and said second activating rod; a first arresting tip connected to the scissor spring and positioned in said first opening; a second arresting tip connected to the scissor spring and positioned in said second opening; a first compression spring between said first activating flange and said handle; a second compression spring between said second activating flange and said handle wherein when one of either of said first or second activating rods is depressed through the application of force to either said first or second activating flanges, said first or second activating clevis displaces said inclined planes of said scissor spring thereby moving said first and second arresting tips in a radial direction inside of said interior of said handle thereby allowing said brush head to slide therealong until said first or second activating flange is released wherein said first or second activating clevis releases, said scissor spring returns to its original position and said first and second arresting tips return to said first and second openings and said brush head is secured to said handle.

  • FIG. 7 is a side view of the brush barrel without the bristles of the hair brush of the instant invention.
  • FIG. 8 is an interior isometric view of the handle assembly of the instant invention illustrating the mechanism for releasing and securing the brush head along the handle.
  • DETAILED DESCRIPTION OF THE PREFERRED EMBODIMENT
  • Turning to the drawings, the preferred embodiment is illustrated and described by reference characters that denote similar elements throughout the several views of the instant invention.
  • FIGS. 1-7 illustrate the preferred embodiment that discloses a hair brush with a slideable brush head assembly. 40 that has an elliptical hollow barrel 42 with a plurality of bristles 44 extending radially outward therefrom. The internal chamber 48 of the brush head assembly 40 receives and snugly houses an elongated slideable handle assembly 8 having a top half 10 and a bottom half 12 that together form an elliptical gripping portion with an internal chamber 50 therein.
  • Inside of the top half 10 and the bottom half 12 is a substantially concave shape with a series of width-wide ribs 54 that repeat along the length of the handle assembly 8. Each rib 54 terminates on one end with a male portion 52 and on the other end with a female portion 56. These male 52 and female portions 56 are assembly posts and there are six of each per handle 8 per side. They are designed in such a way that the handle 8 is doubly symmetrical, i.e., each handle half can be used as a top 10 or a bottom 12 and it can be turned 180 degrees and maintain its structure. They serve as a means to secure the handle halves 10, 12 together. They also serve as guides for the activating rods 22, 24 to restrict the rods to only axial inward and outward movement.
  • In the center of the handle assembly 8 is a post 14 for the placement therein of a scissor spring 82 and accompanying arresting tips 26, 28. The cam 30 has a substantially rectangular shape with a hump 36 on either side.
  • In the internal chamber 50, placed in the lengthwise direction, is housed a plunger 70 which is split in half creating a right side activating rod 22 and a left side activating rod 24 wherein the scissor spring 82 is placed therebetween. Each activating rod 22, 24 terminates in an activating flange 22 a, 24 a that extends beyond the length of the handle assembly 8 top 10 and bottom 12 and a pair of compression springs 32, 34 are positioned between the activating flange 22 a, 24 a and the handle rib 8 a and whose purpose is to keep the activating rods 22, 24 pressing outward when not in operation. They also provide a resisting force when the activating flanges 22 a, 24 a are depressed.
  • Both the top portion 10 and the bottom portion 12 of the handle assembly 8 have two lengthwise recesses, totaling four 72, 74, 76, 78 into which rubber grips 62, 64, 66, 68 are placed for comfort when in use. To move the brush head assembly 40 along the length of the handle assembly 8, the plunger 70 is activated through depression of one of the activating flanges 22 a, 24 a at which point the corresponding the compression springs 32, 34 is likewise depressed and the corresponding activating clevis 22 b, 24 b is moved axially. This causes the inner inclined planes of the activating clevis to slide along the inclined planes of the scissor spring which in turn causes the arresting tips to move radially inward making it so that the arresting tips 26, 28 are no longer abutting into the handle assembly 8 and therefore no longer impeding the path of the brush head assembly 40 therealong.
  • Once the arresting tips 26, 28 retract inward, the brush head assembly 40 can slide off the handle 8. As the pressure is released from the chosen activating flange 22 a, 24 a the reverse happens, i.e., the compression springs 32, 34 push the arresting rods axially outward, thereby causing the scissor spring 82 to return to its normal positions and allowing the arresting tips 26, 28 to extend into the recess hole 16, 18 thereby securing the barrel 42 of the brush head assembly 40 thereon. The brush head assembly 40 may also be removed from the handle 8, if so desired, so that a brush head 40 of a different circumference but the same inner elliptical diameter may be used.
  • The description above describes how to remove the brush head from the handle. However, it is important to note that the mechanism of the instant invention allows for installation of the brush head onto the naked handle without having to depress the activating flanges.
  • The invention illustratively disclosed herein suitably may be practiced in the absence of any element which is not specifically disclosed herein.
  • The discussion included in this patent is intended to serve as a basic description. The reader should be aware that the specific discussion may not explicitly describe all embodiments possible and alternatives that are implicit. Also, this discussion may not fully explain the generic nature of the invention and may not explicitly show how each feature or element can actually be representative or equivalent elements. Again, these are implicitly included in this disclosure. Where the invention is described in device-oriented terminology, each element of the device implicitly performs a function. It should also be understood that a variety of changes may be made without departing from the essence of the invention. Such changes are also implicitly included in the description. These changes still fall within the scope of this invention.
  • Further, each of the various elements of the invention and claims may also be achieved in a variety of manners. This disclosure should be understood to encompass each such variation, be it a variation of any apparatus embodiment, a method embodiment, or even merely a variation of any element of these. Particularly, it should be understood that as the disclosure relates to elements of the invention, the words for each element may be expressed by equivalent apparatus terms even if only the function or result is the same. Such equivalent, broader, or even more generic terms should be considered to be encompassed in the description of each element or action. Such terms can be substituted where desired to make explicit the implicitly broad coverage to which this invention is entitled. It should be understood that all actions may be expressed as a means for taking that action or as an element which causes that action. Similarly, each physical element disclosed should be understood to encompass a disclosure of the action which that physical element facilitates. Such changes and alternative terms are to be understood to be explicitly included in the description.
