4 CURTAIN Filed June 8, 1935 Patented Nov.. l2, 1935 Irving Silverstein, New York, N. YI
Application June 8. 1935, Serial No. 25,577
. 4 Claims.
This invention relates to improvements in curtains. l
For some time pastit has been 'the custom to form' curtains with a single hem alongvits oppo site longitudinal edges as well as at least on one transverse edge. When a curtain of this type is hung, the longitudinal edges become the vertical edges and the transverse edge, the horizontal edgeand due inherently to the texture of the material from which the curtain is constructed combined with the single hem idea certain objections obtain. The curtain will pucker and sag; it is not truly ornate ln appearance; and almost invariably requires the addition of weights to produce a quasi-satisfactory draping.
By certain structuralchanges, I have eliminatedithese disadvantages.
To the accomplishment of the recited objects and other co-ordinating therewith the preferred embodiment of my invention resides in the construction and arrangement of parts hereinafter described, illustrated in the accompanying drawing and embodiedwlthin the' scope of the ap pended claims.
In the drawing, Fig. 1 is an'elevation of a window frame showing the adaptation of a pair of curtains constructed in accordance with my invention.
Fig. 2 is a fragmentary elevation of one corner of a curtain illustrating the structural improvements.
Fig. 3 is a vertical section taken along lines 3-3 of Fig. 2, and
Fig. 4 is a transverse section taken along lines 44 of Fig. 2.
Referring more particularly to. the drawing, I designates awindow frame over which a pair of curtains 2 and 3 are draped in conventional fashion. Since these curtains are substantially identical af description of one will suffice.
A certain width of the material from which the curtain is made, as rayon or the equivalent, is folded upon itself at I along the longitudinal edge and stitched as at 5 to present a double rolled hem. The fabric 8 is then carried along for a suitable distance away from the longitudinal (Cl. 15G-@10) edge, again folded upon itself asl at 1, and stitched at 8 to provide a second double rolled hern.v
This construction may be duplicated along each longitudinal edge of a curtain as well as at the base thereof-see Fig. 3 wherein the double rolled 5 hem structures are denoted in a general way by the reference characters 9 and I0. or if preferred, only one longitudinal or side edge and the bottom edge may be so formed.
l Each corresponding set of seams may be con- 10 structed separately or simultaneously by means of appropriate machinery. v
The side and bottom' seams reinforce the curtain fabric so that when itis hung it will be devoid of puckers and/or sags. Because of the 15 extra material required to form transverse hems 9 and I0 suillcient weight is present to obviate :the necessity of using curtain-weights. The
curtain'hangs in smooth graceful folds and retains its cleanly tailored and neat appearance 2 0 even after laundering or dry cleaning.
In itsbroader aspects my invention comprises not only the various means shown and described but equivalent means for performing the recited functions. It is desired to reserve the right to g5 effect such changes and modifications as may fairly ccme within the scope of the appended claims.
I claim:
1. A curtain having a marginal edgefolded upon itself along two spaced lines, the folded n portions being stitched down at each line.
v2. A curtain having one of its side marginal edges and its bottom marginal edge each folded upon itself along two separate spaced lines, the folded portions being stitched down'at each line. 35
3. A curtain having a marginal edge folded on itself, the outer extreme edge and the inner eir-l treme edge of the marginal fold beingin turn folded upon themselves along two spaced lines and stitched down at each line. n
4. A curtain having a marginal edge folded on itself, the outer extreme edge and the inner extreme edge of the .marginal fold having a doublerolled hem therealong.
Y IRVING SILVERSTEIN.
