One important object of the invention is to provide a novel structure for ornaments having a main or base part and separate parts carrying initials or other ornamental features, said separate parts or inserts being adapted for selective assembly with the base.

A second important object of the invention is to provide a device of this character wherein a rigid base and separate parts or inserts have coacting means enabling the separate parts to be correctly positioned in the base.

A third important object of the invention is to provide separate parts or inserts for such ornaments having bendable prongs adapted to lie behind the base, the latter being so formed that the prongs, when bent to secure the separate parts or inserts in position, will lie flush with the rear face of said base.

With the above and other objects in view as will be presently understood, the invention consists in general of certain novel details of construction and combinations of parts hereinafter fully described, illustrated in the accompanying drawing and specifically claimed.

In the accompanying drawing, which is drawn to a magnified scale, like characters of reference indicate like parts in the several views, and:

Figure 1 is a face view of the ornament constructed in accordance with this invention and showing the parts assembled.

Figure 5 is a rear view of one of the separate parts with the prongs in the position existing before assembly.

In the embodiment of the invention disclosed in the accompanying drawing there is a base member In having its front face preferably provided with ornamentation as at I I. In this base member there is provided one or more openings l2, the parts of the member around said openings being rigid and unyieldable. Preferably these openings have each a pair of parallel sides l3. The back or rear face of this base member is preferably smooth except that along each parallel side l3 there is provided a series of shallow indentations Hi, the indentations of one side being opposite thefindentations of the opposite side. Tongues l5 alternate with these indentations and project into the opening l2, these tongues being of less thickness than the material of the base and having their rear faces in the 6 plane of the rear face of the base member. Thus the tongues project from the sides l3 insuch manner as to form supports for any article placed in the opening and spanning the space between the sides l3.

The separate parts or inserts l6 are made in any preferred form, for instance as initials, and may have their front faces suitably ornamented. The letters of the alphabet are inserted from the front until their. rear surface bears against the tongues l5. Then the prongs H are bent into the indentations I4. These inserts are preferably somewhat thinner than the base In so that when an insert is placed in an opening l2 and has its back resting on the tongues l5 its face will be substantially flush with the face of the base member It). At those parts of the periphery of each insert which are intended to lie adjacent the sides l3, when the insert is in place, the insert is provided with prongs I! which, before the insert is in place in the base, extend perpendicularly from the rear face of the insert. These prongs are so positioned on the insert that they will pass between adjacent tongues I5 and can then be bent to lie in the indentations I4. The prongs preferably have a thickness corresponding to the depth of the indentations so that when bent to fit such indentations their rear faces will lie in the plane of the rear face of the base 10.

It will be seen from the foregoing that any desired insertion of a set such as an alphabet may be inserted in any opening 12 and there held by the tongues l5 and prongs l-l. It will also be seen that, by bending up the prongs ll of an, insertion in place, such insertion may be removed and replaced by another.

Further, it will be obvious that, while the invention is adapted for use with highly artistic ornaments, this invention is not confined to any particular type or character of ornament either on the base or on the insertions. It will also be noted that the prongs I! are so disposed as to properly center the inserts in the base.

There has thus been provided a simple and efiicient device of the kind described and for the purpose specified.

It is obvious that changes may be made in the form and construction of the invention without departing from the material principles involved.

It is not therefore desired to confine the invention the base member to hold the insert in place, the

to the exact form herein shown and described but it is desired to include all forms which come within the scope of the appended claims.

What is claimed, is:-- g 1. In an ornament, a base member having an opening therein, an insert having prongs thereon adapted to be bent to lie against the back of rear face of said base member having spaced indentations receiving said prongs, when bent to hold the insert in place, and-means carried by said base member and projecting into said opening, said means engaging the'rear facel'ofp said insert and limiting its rearward movement through said opening.
