The invention entirely eliminates the long lasting-and in` accurate stretching of skins or hides by hand as now practiced. Stretching apparatus'has been used, which. however, causes the skin to stretch 10 to a larger degree on the outer than in the middle portions; the-latter disadvantage is valso eliminated by the present invention whichfor the reasons set forth is of great value in glovemaking.

The connecting screws of the various bars of the lowerframe 2 form the pivots and are provided with, a slightly rounded projecting head1 which is roughened on the surface in order to firmly grip vthe skins andrprevent thesame from slip '15 ping. When tender skins are to be stretched it is advisable to provide the screws 6 with a rounded rubber head in order to prevent any damage to' the skin. The actuating bars 5 of each frame are provided at each end with a hole I I through which a pin (not shown) -may be passed in order to hold the. frames in register. It is, of course,- also possible to provide any other means serving the same purpose.

both frames are then actuated slightly beyond the desired degree of stretch to eliminate any back-movement of the skin. The frames are then secured in their adjusted position by passing bolts through the desired holes I4 in thegauge so that the frames may be maintained in said adjusted position.

Due to the equal spacing of the connecting screws of the various bars and due to the firm clamping of the skin between the frames, the skin is forced to uniformly follow the slightest movements of the frames in exactly the same manner and thereby an absolutely equal unidirectional stretching of the skin in its smallestv Many modifications may, of course, be provided,

without departing from the spirit of the invention.

What 'I claim is: 1. A device for stretching skinsor hides in a predetermined direction, said device comprising two registering frames eacli consisting of a set of parallel bars and a second set of parallel bars crossing the bars of said first set, pivots connecting the bars in each of said setsto the bars in the other at the crossing points, and projections on said pivots in the adjacent faces of the frames to engage and firmly hold the skin therebetween. 2. A device for stretching skins or hides in a predetermined direction, said device comprising two registering frames each consisting of a set of parallel bars and a second set of parallel bars crossing thebars of said first set, pivots connecting the bars in each of said sets to the bars in the other at the crossing points, projections on said pivots in the adjacent'f'ac'es of the frames to engage and flrmly hold the skin therebetween,

3. A device for stretching skins or hides-said device comprising two registering frames each consisting of a set -of parallel bars and a second set of parallel bars crossing the bars of said firstv set, pivots connecting the bars in each ofsaid sets to the bars of the other at the crossing points,

A device for stretching skins or hides, said device comprising two registering frames each consisting of a set of parallel bars and a second set of parallel bars crossing the bars of said first set, pivots connecting the bars in each of said sets to the bars of the other at the crossing points, the-center bar in each of. the sets of bars in the frames extending beyond said frames and constituting an actuating bar therefor, projectionsl onthe pivots in theadjacent faces of the frames to engage and rmly hold the' skin therebetween, and means for maintaining the frames in stretching position.

A device-for stretching skins or hides, said device comprising two registering frames each 5 consisting of a set of parallel bars and a second set of parallel bars crossing the bars of said first set, pivots connecting the bars ineach of said sets to the bars of the other at the crossing points, the center bar in each of the sets of bars inthe 10 frames extending beyond said frames and constituting an actuating bar therefor, projections on the pivots in 'the adjacent faces of the frames to engage and firmly hold the skin therebetween, and means associated with said actuating bars 15 for determining the degree to which the skins are stretched.

A device for stretching skins or hides, said device comprising two registering frames each consisting of a set of parallel bars and a second set of parallel bars crossing the bars of said rst set and pivotally connected thereto at the crossing points, one of the bars in each of said 'sets o being of greater cross section area than the others and extending beyond the frames constituting an actuating bar therefor, and means for maintaining the frames invstretching position.

A device for stretching skins or hides, said 5 device comprising two registering frames each consisting of a set of parallel bars and a second set of parallel bars crossing the bars of said rst set and pivotally connected thereto at the crossing points, one oi' the bars in each of said sets w being of greater cross section area than theothers and extending beyond the frame constitutinglan actuating bar therefor, and mea'ns associated with said actuating bars for determining the degree to which the skins are stretched.

A device for stretching skins or hidesin a predetermined direction, said device comprising j two registering frames eachconsisting of a set of parallel 'bars anda, second set of parallel bars crossing the bars of said rst set, pivots connectw ing the barsv in each of said sets to the bars in the other set at the crossing points, projections on said pivots inthe adjacent faces, of the frames, and resilient means mounted inthe projections of the pivots in oneof said frames arranged to u cooperate with the projections on the pivots of the other frame and engage and firmly hold the skin therebetween', the projection on the pivots in' said other frame being rounded.
