Abstract

A smoking crutch. A spiral shaped smoking crutch cylindrical in overall shape and having one or more spiral groves or channels wound about a longitudinal axis, and disposed on an outer surface. The crutch material may be hard and impregnable, or alternatively semi porous for the addition of flavoring, dye and the like. The spiral groves are sized to prohibit smoking material from entering the crutch and eventually the smoker's mouth. The spiral groves tend to improve the flow of smoke delivered to a smoker.

Description

    CROSS-REFERENCE TO RELATED APPLICATION
  • This application claims the benefit of U.S. Provisional Patent Application No. 62/563,464, filed on Sep. 26, 2017, the contents of which are hereby incorporated by reference.
  • TECHNICAL FIELD
  • This description relates generally to smoking products and accessories, and more specifically to cigarette construction.
  • BACKGROUND
  • Crutches are smoking devices used in cigarettes much like a smoking filter, without substantially impeding the flow of smoke. The crutch is effectively a mouthpiece, and may serve multiple purposes: it keeps the end of the cigarette open, blocks bits of smoking material from getting in the mouth, puts distance between a smoker and the material smoked so that the smoker is not burned when attempting the smoke substantially all of the material. Many conventional smoking crutches tend to only put distance between the material smoked and the smoker without filtration. They can be a simple tube of rolled paper or the like, or other sort of baffle that keeps the smoker separated from the material which tends to be a chopped plant material-tobacco or the like. However, conventional crutches tend not to do a satisfactory job in blocking plant material from being sucked into the smoker's mouth, and do nothing to improve draw.
  • Filters on the other hand are porous devices often used in smoking to improve or add flavor, filter the smoke, keep the product smoked from entering the smoker's mouth, or the like as smoke is drawn through the filter. Filters may be also used in other smoking devices such as pipes that may use charcoal or the like to improve the taste of the smoke. Filters typically do not change or improve the smoke flow (or equivalently as used herein the “airflow”), they simply filter, add distance between the smoker and product, filter, and/or flavor the material smoked.
  • Because smoke is drawn through the filter, conventional filters accordingly tend to restrict smoke flow in a cigarette as they put a block between the smoker and the burning material, and require that smoke be drawn through the typically fibrous filter. Accordingly the smoker must puff a little harder to draw the material through the filter. As such it may be desirable to provide a device that tends to increase or improve airflow of smoke to a smoker without impeding the draw of a cigarette while still putting distance between the smoker and smoking material as well as blocking the particles of smoking material.
  • SUMMARY
  • The following presents a simplified summary of the disclosure in order to provide a basic understanding to the reader. This summary is not an extensive overview of the disclosure and it does not identify key/critical elements of the invention or delineate the scope of the invention. Its sole purpose is to present some concepts disclosed herein in a simplified form as a prelude to the more detailed description that is presented later.
  • The present example provides a spiral-shaped tip or crutch that functions as a strong breathable barrier with no loss of airflow to a smoker and tends to provide an enhanced draw when used in a cigarette. The spiral shaped crutch is generally cylindrical in shape and of a diameter typical of a desired cigarette and may be made from inert nonflammable or minimally flammable material. Voids impressed or formed into the spiral shape of the cylinder are spiral voids. That is, the spiral winds about the long axis of the crutch. The spiral-shaped tip or crutch may be used with a variety of loose leaf material (or equivalently “smoking material”) rolled into a cigarette. Alternatively, the spiral-shaped tip or crutch for loose leaf cigarettes may also be used between a smoker and the smoked substance in pipes or the like. The s spiral-shaped tip or crutch, when placed between the smoker and substance smoked in a cigarette, creates a vortex of airflow circulation within the cigarette when a smoker takes a draw. The increase in airflow allows for a bigger, clearer, fuller draw or drag of smoke from the cigarette without an excess of the loose material entering the user's mouth as the device blocks the loose material. As such, the spiral-shaped tip or crutch for loose leaf cigarettes tends to function as a filter and a draw enhancing device.

  • DETAILED DESCRIPTION
  • The detailed description provided below in connection with the appended drawings is intended as a description of the present examples and is not intended to represent the only forms in which the present example may be constructed or utilized. The description sets forth the functions of the example and the sequence of steps for constructing and operating the example. However, the same or equivalent functions and sequences may be accomplished by different examples.
  • The examples below describe a spiral-shaped tip or crutch. Although the present examples are described and illustrated herein as being implemented in a cigarette system (machine or hand rolled), the system described is provided as an example and not a limitation. As those skilled in the art will appreciate, the present examples are suitable for application in a variety of different types of smoking systems such as pipes, cigars and the like utilizing tobacco, marijuana and other smoking materials.
  • The present invention may be installed in a conventional machine constructed cigarette assemblage where a filter tip might be placed. Alternatively, the invention may be used in a hand-rolled cigarette or equivalent and being placed between the smoker and the substance being smoked within the cigarette paper that is rolled up.
  • The spiral shaped smoking crutch for loose leaf cigarettes solves four of the most common problems and negative aspects associated with loose leaf cigarettes by:
      • (1) Reducing the amount of loose leaf material from entering inside the user's mouth when inhaling and/or draw from the loose leaf cigarette.
      • (2) Providing a stable tip that is easy to handle and does not allow the cigarette rolling paper to collapse or fold back into itself under the pressure of the user's grip while holding the cigarette or the user's lips during the inhaling and/or draw on the cigarette.
      • (3) Increasing the smoke circulation within the loose leaf cigarette while lit and in use, and creates an unequalled amount of smoke for a cleaner and fuller draw without having any blockage of airflow due to accumulation of the loose leaf material.
      • (4) Removing any and all negative and unwanted tastes that are typically associated with a fiber type filter or cardboard/paper type filter.
  • The present example provides a spiral-shaped tip or crutch that functions as an internal tip/crutch that provides a strong breathable barrier with no loss of airflow to a smoker and tends to provide an enhanced draw when used in a cigarette. The spiral shaped crutch is generally cylindrical in shape and of a diameter typical of a desired cigarette. Impressed or formed into the spiral shape of the cylinder are spiral shaped voids. That is, the spiral winds about the long axis of the crutch. The spiral-shaped tip or crutch may be used with a variety of loose leaf material rolled into a cigarette.
  • The spiral-shaped enhanced draw tip/crutch for loose leaf cigarettes may be made from any suitable inert nonflammable or minimally flammable material. The spiral-shaped enhanced draw tip/crutch for loose leaf cigarettes is typically provided in a spiral shape, with either a right hand or left hand twist. The twist may be in a single spiral or a compound twist of two or more spirals (such as in a double or triple threaded screw). The length and diameter of the spiral-shaped enhanced draw tip/crutch for loose leaf cigarettes may be varied as desired. In alternative examples the diameter may vary. For example, the diameter may be gradually reduced from one end to the other, or the diameter may vary along the length.
  • The spiral-shaped enhanced draw tip/crutch for loose leaf cigarettes may be manufactured as a disposable, or alternatively, as a reusable item.
  • In alternative examples, the spiral-shaped enhanced draw tip/crutch for loose leaf cigarettes (0010) may be somewhat porous and impregnated or infused with a flavoring or other aromatic substance. The flavoring of the spiral-shaped tip/crutch provides a unique opportunity and added benefit to allow the loose leaf cigarette to be flavored to the user's popular/preferred taste.
  • In alternative examples, the spiral-shaped enhanced draw tip/crutch for loose leaf cigarettes may be colored in one or more decorative colors, with food coloring or equivalent. The coloring of the spiral-shaped tip/crutch allows the tip/crutch to be even more customizable and adds an overall distinguishable appearance that can be recognized.
  • FIG. 1 shows a spiral-shaped enhanced draw tip/crutch (“spiral shaped smoking crutch”) 0010 for loose leaf cigarettes with airflow shown with arrows. The crutch typically fits within a generally cylindrical shape 102. In alternative examples the overall shape of the spiral-shaped enhanced draw tip/crutch may have other general shape envelopes such as a truncated cone overall shape envelope 106, a barrel shaped envelope, or the like. Each example has a long axis 101 about which a single, or compound grove or spiral is wound by disposing a grove that extends to the outer surface of the spiral-shaped enhanced draw tip/crutch. Whatever the outward shape of the spiral-shaped enhanced draw tip/crutch a defining characteristic is the spiral passageways that give the desired draw effect. In further alternative examples of a spiral-shaped enhanced draw tip/crutch spiral shaped passageways may be disposed in the interior of the spiral-shaped enhanced draw tip/crutch in addition to or in place of the exterior spiral groves.
  • As can be seen the smoke pathway is a spiral 103 with one or more twists to create a vortex effect when taking a draw from a cigarette having the crutch 0010 installed. The smoke enters a first crutch end 104, and follows the spiral path 103, and exits at a second crutch end 105. The center is generally solid to make the spiral shaped smoking crutch rigid and so that the smoke is forced through the spiral when a draw is taken. In alternative examples the spiral shaped smoking crutch may be a solid cylinder in which one or more spiral shaped groves relative to its longitudinal axis 101 are disposed, typically by molding, extruding, twisting, cutting or the like. The groves typically extend along the entire length of the outer surface of the spiral shaped smoking crutch. One or more sets of parallel spiral groves may be disposed on the spiral shaped smoking crutch to create a compound spiral. The width and depth of the groves may be selected to produce a desired airflow by methods known to those skilled in the art.
  • The spiral-shaped enhanced draw tip/crutch can be made of various types of different materials from the standard of using a pasta noodle made of dough (fusilli, rotini, or any spiral noodle shape) to include materials like plastic, glass, wood, metal, gold, silver, titanium, marble, any type of molded rock, steel, hemp/cannabis, iron, bronze, ceramic, thermoplastic, paper, cardboard, or clay. The materials may be rigid and non-absorptive, or may in alternative examples, be rigid but slightly porous to accept flavorings or the like. It is worth noting that nonporous materials used for the spiral-shaped enhanced draw tip/crutch may be easily cleaned so that the spiral-shaped enhanced draw tip/crutch may be reused.
  • The spiral-shaped tip/crutch 0010 is advantageously shaped or formed to allow optimized or increased airflow circulation inside a rolled loose leaf cigarette. The spiral shape effectively creates a vortex of smoke when placed at the end of a rolled loose leaf cigarette. The spiral shape is generally similar to that of a pasta noodle called a solid fusilli or rotini that is formed into a helical (but not corkscrew) shape typically by extruding the pasta. The crutch may be similarly formed from plastic or the other previously described materials. Alternatively the crutch may be molded or formed by other methods known to those skilled in the art.
  • The size is not limited to the standard fusilli, rotini noodle size. While the standard size works well, the size can be modified to make a bigger sized spiral shaped smoking crutch 0010, or modified to make a smaller spiral shaped smoking crutch 0010. The length of the spiral shaped smoking crutch 0010 can be modified to produce a longer spiral shaped smoking crutch 0010 or modified to produce a shorter version. The spiral shaped smoking crutch 0010 can be made bigger at one end and smaller at the other end to give the appearance of a tornado type spiral shaped smoking crutch 0010. The standard of keeping the spiral shaped smoking crutch 0010 straight will tend to ensure the same vortex effect is created equally, even when the size changes. The spiral shaped smoking crutch 0010 can be made to accommodate all sizes of loose leaf cigarette rolling papers.
  • In alternative examples the spiral shaped smoking crutch 0010 can be dyed any color by adding typically FDA approved, food grade safe food coloring and/or dye. Coloring can be achieved by adding the food coloring and/or dye directly to the mixture used to create the spiral shaped smoking crutch 0010 prior to pressing, forming, extruding or the like, or by adding the food coloring and/or dye and applying it to the already created spiral shaped smoking crutch 0010 after formation (for porous materials). Variations of color are limitless, and can be achieved using the methods listed above. The variations in color from the food coloring and/or dye typically do not affect the taste of the spiral shaped smoking crutch 0010 as the increase in airflow circulation is generated by the form and shape of the spiral shaped smoking crutch 0010, since the smoke created does not physically penetrate through the spiral shaped smoking crutch 0010 material as it would tend to in a typical type fiber filter or cardboard type filter would in a standard cigarette. This means the smoke from the loose leaf material flows over and through the spirals of the spiral shaped smoking crutch 0010 without affecting the taste by the color added.
  • In yet further alternative examples, the spiral shaped smoking crutch 0010 can be flavored using typically standard FDA food grade safe flavoring, or by using all-natural extracts and oils, including non-THC CBD oils. The spiral shaped smoking crutch 0010 can be infused with any and all types of FDA approved flavoring/extracts to add an additional element to the spiral shaped smoking crutch. The flavoring can be provided by adding the flavoring to the mixture prior to pressing and creating the actual spiral shaped smoking crutch 0010, or can be applied to an already pressed and created spiral shaped smoking crutch 0010. The spiral-shaped enhanced draw tip/crutch 0010 can hold and sustain different flavors and deliver them to the user while the spiral shaped smoking crutch 0010 is in use. The smoke from the loose leaf material 0011 passes over the flavored spirals and at the final moment before reaching the user's mouth infuses into the taste of the smoke. This allows the user to taste the infused flavored smoke that is enhanced to a high enough degree where the user can enjoy the added tastes that the flavored spiral shaped smoking crutch 0010 provides to the loose leaf material 0011. The smoke does not flow through the material of the spiral shaped smoking crutch 0010 like a standard cigarette filter, however, because as the smoke passes over and through the spirals of the flavored spiral shaped smoking crutch 0010, the smoke takes a longer path becomes infused when the user inhales and takes a draw/drag of the cigarette.
  • FIG. 2 shows the general dimensions or form factor of a spiral-shaped enhanced draw tip/crutch for loose leaf cigarettes 0010. The spiral-shaped tip/crutch 0010 should be preferably constructed to have an outer cylindrical envelope (102 of FIG. 1) that is cylindrical and substantially straight along its length “l”. Typically the cylindrical shape is not tapered with diameter d1 being equal to d2. Although in alternative examples d1 may differ from d2 to form a tapered cylinder, or a cylinder having a reduced diameter at one end. In further alternative examples the ends of the cylinder may be rounded so as not to cut into the cigarette paper. In further alternative examples, shapes deviating from a cylinder such as a generally cylindrical form having a bulge in the middle with tapered ends or the like are also contemplated.
  • In an alternative example, a special sized spiral-shaped smoking crutch 0010, (tornado style) has a smaller end (“d1”) and a second larger end (“d2”), which can be constructed in order to allow for an even airflow to maintain an even pull/drag from the user while in use. Both the straight and spiral-shaped smoking crutch allows the loose leaf cigarette to be rolled into place without creating a bend or crease in the cigarette rolling paper.
  • FIG. 3 shows a first step in rolling a cigarette with the spiral shaped smoking crutch for loose leaf cigarettes 0010. The spiral shaped smoking crutch 0010 is placed at the very end of the cigarette rolling paper 0011 to allow an opening at the end of the cigarette. The spiral shaped smoking crutch protrudes 301 from the paper once it is rolled into place. The spiral shaped smoking crutch acts as an internal tip inside the loose leaf cigarette and allows for maximum airflow to be generated without compromising the taste of the later added loose leaf material, or getting the material into the user's mouth.
  • FIG. 4 shows a second step in rolling a cigarette with the spiral shaped smoking crutch 0010 for loose leaf cigarettes. The loose leaf smoking material 0012 is disposed on the rolling paper 0011 up to and abutting 401 an end of the spiral shaped smoking crutch 0010. The spiral shaped smoking crutch 0010 creates an effective breathable barrier to keep the loose leaf material 0012 from getting sucked into the user's mouth while the smoker is taking a draw/drag. The spiral shaped smoking crutch barrier holds the loose leaf material 0012 in place and creates airflow to pass smoke from the burning loose leaf material 0012 to the user's mouth as a vortex of smoke because of the spiral shape of the spiral shaped smoking crutch. The increase of smoke created from the vortex air circulation and the clean barrier it provides, allows for the user to take cleaner and fuller draws when the user inhales the smoke from the loose leaf material 0012.
  • FIG. 5 shows a top view of a cigarette prior to rolling including the spiral shaped smoking crutch for loose leaf cigarettes 0010; that is looking into the folded paper with the components in place prior to rolling. The spiral shaped smoking crutch 0010 is rolled into place with the loose leaf material 0012 at one end of the cigarette rolling paper 0011, and the spiral shaped smoking crutch 0010 on the other end of the cigarette paper 0011 where the user places their mouth to take a draw of smoke from the lit loose leaf cigarette. As can be seen, the spiral shaped smoking crutch provides distance 503 between the smoker and the burning material, as well as an open end 502 to further aid the flow of smoke. The loose leaf material 0012 can be molded into place 501 with the user's hands using a hand rolling method or alternatively the cigarette can be molded into place in a rolling press.
  • Alternatively, excess loose leaf material 0012 may be rolled up with a portion removed from the end of the cigarette rolling paper 0011 where the spiral shaped smoking crutch for loose leaf cigarettes 0010 may then be inserted.
  • In a further alternative example, an empty rolling paper 0011 can be wrapped around the spiral shaped smoking crutch 0010 for loose leaf cigarettes without any loose leaf material 0012 being present initially. The rolling paper can then be rolled up and sealed leaving an empty, open, pre-rolled loose leaf cigarette that can then be filled with the loose leaf material 0012 by methods known to those skilled in the art. The spiral shaped smoking crutch 0010 for loose leaf cigarettes holds the empty rolling paper in place and keeps it open to allow the cigarette to be filled.
  • FIG. 6 shows final rolling 602 of the cigarette including the spiral shaped smoking crutch 0010 for loose leaf cigarettes inside the rolled cigarette paper 0011. The spiral shaped smoking crutch is rolled 602 into place while rolling the cigarette at the same time. After the first initial roll, the spiral shaped smoking crutch 0010 will hold itself in place until the cigarette is completely rolled 602 and sealed by the user.
  • FIG. 7 shows a cross-sectional side view of a completed rolled cigarette including the spiral shaped smoking crutch for loose leaf cigarettes 0010 stopping the migration of loose smoking material 702 when rolled into the cigarette paper 0011. The spiral shaped smoking crutch 0010 effectively stops the loose leaf smoking material 0012 from entering the user's mouth during the user's pull/drag by trapping the loose leaf material 0012 within the ribs or groves of the spiral shaped smoking crutch 0010. This allows for smoke/airflow circulation and smoke to continue without creating blockage. Airflow is further aided by the open cigarette end 502 allowed by the use of the spiral shaped smoking crutch in the rolled cigarette.
  • FIG. 8 shows further details of the spiral shaped smoking crutch for loose leaf cigarettes 0010 as viewed from the end. The spiral shaped smoking crutch 0010 provides a strong and sturdy tip to allow for easy handling, both with the user's fingers while holding it, and the user's lips while they are pressed against the spiral shaped smoking crutch 0010 to create a pull/drag of the cigarette. The solid form keeps the opening in the cigarette end from collapsing into itself and maintains space to allow for the smoke circulation to continue throughout the time the cigarette is lit and in use.
  • The spiral shaped smoking crutch 0010 as described above can be modified to add text, print, patterns, or logos of any nature. This design feature allows the spiral shaped smoking crutch 0010 to include all different types of patterns, sayings, or variations in color, such as multi-colored designs, or the like.
  • Those skilled in the art will realize that the process sequences described above may be equivalently performed in any order to achieve a desired result. Also, sub-processes may typically be omitted as desired without taking away from the overall functionality of the processes described above.
