Description

RAYMOND. Device for Splicing Carriage Shafts.
Patented April 2, I878.
UNITED. STATES PATENT OFFICE.
SILAS H. RAYMOND, OF GRAND RAPIDS, MICHIGAN.
IMPROVEMENT IN DEVICES FOR SPLICING CARRIAGE-SHAFTS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 201,892, dated April 2, 1878; application filed J annary 17, 1878.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, SlLAs H. RAYMOND, of the city of Grand Rapids, in the county of Kent, in the State of Michigan, have made certain Improvements in Shaft-Sockets designed to be used on the front end of carriage and buggy shafts, of which the following is a specification:
The nature of my improvement over my old patent of August 31,1875, No. 167,196, is substantially as set forth in the following specification.
The object of my invention is to make a stronger splice than any heretofore made. The sockets now in use are entirely too weak where the filling meets the front end of the carriage-shaft. When it is trodden on by a horse, or has any strain on it, it breaks very easily, as the sockets, being made of sheetiron, are entirely too light.
The nature of my invention now is to make a shorter socket, and to have it heavier, and the filling to be of second-growth hickory, or any wood equally as good.
The socket A, is six inches in length, made the same taper as that of a carriage-shaft, with a partition about an eighth of an inchinthickness firmly attached to the walls of the socket A, two and a half inches from the small end, with awedge about an inch in length attached to the partition and walls of the socket A, so as to split the back end of the filling B and form a dovetail splice. On the opposite side of the partition is a dowel, three-quarters of. an inch in length by three-eighths of an inch extended over the socket to the shaft, entirely hiding the socket from View, and making a complete finish, so that no person can see there is any splice on said shaft.
I deem malleable iron the most desirable metal, but do not confine myself to that alone, as other metals may be used; also, the wedge for splitting the wood filling B may be of wood.
Having thus described my improvement, I
claim to have invented and desire to secure by Letters Patent- The metal socket A,provided with the hickory or wooden filling B, in combination with the wedge, partition, and dowel O, and the front end of the carriage-shaft D, when constructed substantially as and for the purpose described.
I SILAS H. RAYMOND. Witnesses:
JAS. H. SMITH, O. F. RAMSEY.
