Description

G. FIGHTER. Hasp -Look.
No. 20l,877. Patented April 2,1878.
if" I 1v VEN TOR IV/ rA/Ess ES NKFEIERS. PHOTQ-I-ITHOGRAPHER, WASHINGTON. D C.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFIC CONRAD FIGHTER, OF SYRACUSE, NEW YORK, ASSIGNOR-OF ONE-HALF HIS RIGHT TO JOHN LIGHTON, OF SAME PLACE.
IMPROVEMENT IN HASP-LOCKS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 201,877, dated April 2, 1878; application filed November 2, 1877.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, CONRAD FIGHTER, of the city of Syracuse, in the county of Onondaga, in the State of New York, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Hasp-Locks,
of which the following, taken in connection.
with the accompanying drawing, is a full, clear, and exact description.
This invention consists in a novel construction of a lock combined with a hasp, and in its combination with the staple, whereby not only the use of padlocks is dispensed with, but which also renders'the lock comparatively secure against malicious tampering therewith.
The invention is clearly illustrated in the accompanying drawing, wherein Figure 1 is a top view of the hasp-lock complete; Fig. 2, a view of the lock with the cover of the case removed to show the lock mechanism; Fig. 3, a longitudinal section of Fig. 1 ,andFig. 4, a view of the lock-bolt inverted, to show part of the devices for preventing the opening orretraction of the bolt without the proper key.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts.
H represents a hasp, constructed at one end in the usual manner, for its attachment to the door. a circular case, a, in which is arranged the lock mechanism hereinafter described. The case 0 has an aperture near the inner edge of its back plate, through hich the staple enters.
An annular lock-bolt, b, fitted to the interior of the case a, and having an opening, a, for the passage through it of the staple, is provided on its inner periphery, opposite the opening a, with cogs or teeth t. Directly in front of these cogs the cover or front plate of the case is provided with a. key-hole of suitable shape to admit a key with a projection on its side. At the opening a of the bolt the front and rear plates of the lock-case are provided with an aperture for the passage of the staple s, which is of sufficient length to project at the front of the lock-case, and has an eye, 6, at the inside of the case, for the passage through it of the bolt 6, and an eye, 0, at the outside, for the fastening of the ordinary hasp-hook h. By passing the staple s through the lock-case and Its opposite end is constructed to form around under that portion of the bolt 12 which contains the aforesaid teeth.
Each of the arms r is provided with two notches, n, at such relative position that when the bolt is in a locked position one of the notches in each arm 1" will be brought directly opposite a guard, g, affixed to the lock-case. A spring, 12, at the rear of said arms or tumblers forces them forward and causes the guard g to engage the notches n, thereby preventing the retraction of the bolt without the proper key, which, bya projection on its side, forces the arms rearward and releases them from the guard g. This done, the key next engages one of the teeth tof the bolt 12, and thereby moves the same in the direction desired.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim is-- 1. The combination and arrangement of the circular case 0, having the staple-entrance near the inner edge of its back plate, the annular bolt b, having opening a, and, opposite the same, the teeth t, the tumblers 1', pivoted to the bolt and having notches a, the spring c at the rear of the tumblers, and the stationary guard g at the front of same, all constructed and arranged to operate substantially as specified and shown.
2. The staple s, protruding through the cover of the case 0, and provided with eye 0 at the outside thereof, and the hook h, pivoted to the cover of the case, constructed and arranged gs (iiescribed and shown, for the purpose speci- CONRAD FIGHTER.
