11 Claims.
This invention relates to paper files, and especially tov files of the class commonly known as visible indexes in which there is a series of sheets supported by carriers in a panel, drawer or rotary support, and having identification receiving margins arranged in overlapped relationship. More specifically, the invention is concerned with a novel, relative arrangement of a folded, main sheet, an auxiliary sheet or sheets and a sheath for their exposed margins. The invention will be understood by reference to the following description when taken in connection with the accompanying drawing of certain specific embodiments thereof, while its scope will be pointed out more particularly in the appended claims.

Referring to the drawing, and to the embodiments of the invention illustrated therein by way ofV example, and having reference, at first, to. Figs. l and 2, there is shown a main sheet 8 folded at IIl to present two leaves I2 and I4, having margins I6 and I8, respectively. The sheet is supported by a carrier, herein a wire 20 extending lengthwise of the fold and suitably secured tothe sheet as by providing the latter with two perforations 22 adjacent to the fold, through which perforations the wire is threaded, with the principal portion of the wire within the fold. The wire has appropriate terminals such as trunnions 24 to be received'in channels of a panel or drawer and to determine the exposure or overlap of the margins, as in Quigley Patent No. 1,450,304.
A sheath 26, made of suitable material such as transparent celluloid, is folded to present two walls 28 and 30 between which the margin I8 is received (seeFig. 6). In the example shown, the wall 30 is folded at 32 downwardly to present a lip 34 spaced from the remainder of the wall and the margin I8 is folded at 36 upwardly to present a lip 38 which interlocks with the lip 34, thereby to lock the sheath onto the margin and to prevent removal of the sheath except by sliding the latter lengthwise of said margin.
The main sheet and the sheath cooperate in a novel manner to support an auxiliary sheet which may take various forms. According to one form, there is an auxiliary sheet 40 folded at 42 to present two leaves 44 and 46, the leaf 44 having a margin 48 opposite the fold, and the leaf 46 hav- 5 ing a margin 50 (best shown in Fig. 6) received within the sheath between the margin I8 and the wall 28.
The auxiliary sheet is received within the main sheet, and where the auxiliary sheet is folded, 10 the fold of the auxiliary sheet is within the fold of the main sheet (see Fig. 7). The auxiliary sheet shown in Fig. 2, for example, has its leaf reduced in length (considered with reference to the lengthwise dimension of the wire) and it has two edges 5I between and adjacent to the perforations 22, respectively.
In Fig. 3, there is shown an auxiliary sheet 52 folded to present two leaves 54 and 56, and held in place within the main sheet and within the sheath go in the manner described in connection with Fig. 2, and the leaf 54 has two oblique edges 58 between the perforations of the main sheet. In this case, the leaf 54 is rather small and hardly more than a large tab. 25
In the form shown in Fig. 4, there is an auxiliary sheet 60 folded at 62 to present two leaves 64 and 66 having margins 68 and l0, the latter extending into the sheath. In this case, the auxiliary sheet is provided with two perforations 12. and the wire extends through these perforations as well as through the perforations of the main sheet.
In the form shown in Fig. 5, there is an auxiliary sheet I4 having two margins 16 and 18, one 35 received within the fold of the main sheetadjacent to the wire, and the other within the sheath 26, along with the corresponding margin of the main sheet. In this case, when the main sheet is folded, its fold limits movement of the auxiliary l sheet upwardly out of the sheath, so that, when the main sheet is inverted (with the sheath above the wire) in manipulating the sheets, the auxillary sheet, being restrained between the foldv of the main sheet and the sheath, cannot fall out. k
as it is then being supported mainly by and within the fold of the main sheet. At this time, of course, the leaf I2 of the main sheet overlies the auxiliary sheet.
In each of the examples shown, there is a signal element B0 folded as at 82, wrapped about the adjacent margins of the main and auxiliary sheets within the sheath, and having another portion, herein a, manipulating tab 84, which is received between and protected by the leaves 01155 the main sheet, and lying between the front face of the auxiliary sheet and the rear face of the 1eaf I2. Lifting the leaf l2 exposes the tab 84, whichmay then be grasped to slide the signal element lengthwise within the sheath. The signal element is provided with a usual aperture 86 through which indicia on the auxiliary card may be vewied.
Having thus described certain embodiments of my invention, but Without limiting myself there-V to, .what I claim, and desire by Letters Patent to secure is:
1. In a paper file, the combination of a foldable and unfoldable main sheet normally folded to present two hingedly connected leaves connected to each other only by the fold, Aeach having a margin opposite the fold, a folded sheath within whichvone of Y said margins is received, a sheet carrier extending lengthwise of and adjacent to the fold, and an auxiliary sheet disposed between said leaves and having a mar- 'gin also received within said sheath, said auxiliary sheet having-a portion received within the fold of said main sheet adjacent to said carrier, said auxiliary sheet being accessible for the making of records thereon and for the inspection of said records by merely unfolding said main sheet.
2. In a paper file, the combination of a foldable and unfoldable main sheet normally folded to present two hingedly connected leaves connected to each other only by the fold each having a margin opposite the fold, said sheet being provided with perforations adjacent to the fold, a folded sheath within which one of said margins is received, a sheet carrier extending lengthwise of and partly within the fold of said main Vsheetand through said perforations, and an auxiliary sheet disposed between said leaves and hav- Y ing a margin also received within said sheath,

In a paper file, the combination of a. foldable and unfoldable main sheet normally folded to present two hingedly connected leaves connected to each other only by the fold, each having a margin opposite the fold, said sheet being provided with perforations adjacent to the fold, a folded sheath within which one oi' said Vmargins -is received, a sheet carrier extending lengthwise of and partly within the fold of said main sheet ('00.

In a paper file, the combination of a foldable and unofoldable main sheet normally folded to present two hingedly connected leaves connectedA to each other only by thefold, each having a margin opposite the fold, said sheet being provided with perforations adjacent Vto the fold, a folded lYI sheath within which one of said margins is received, a sheet carrier extending lengthwise of and partly within the fold of said main sheet and through said perforations, and an auxiliary sheet folded to present two leaves, each having a margin opposite the fold, the margin of one of the last-mentioned leaves being received within said sheath, the other of the last-mentioned leaves having two lateral edges between and adjacent to said perforations, respectively, and the fold of said auxiliary sheet being within the fold of said main sheet, said auxiliary sheet being accessible for the making of records thereon and for the inspection of said records by merely unfolding said main sheet.

In a paper file, the combination of a foldable and unfoldable main sheet normally folded to present two hingedly connected leaves connected to each other only by the fold, each having a margin opposite the fold, a folded sheath within which one of said margins is received, a sheet carrier extending lengthwise of and adjacent to the fold, an auxiliary sheet disposed be- 5 tween said leaves and having a margin also received within said sheath, and a folded signal element having a portion received within said sheath and wrapped about both of said margins which are received within said sheath, said auxiliary sheet being accessible for the making of records thereon and for the inspection of said records by merely unfolding said main sheet.
