My invention relates to bricks and is particularly directed to corner brick used with facing brick in building construction and the like.
This invention is especially intended for use 5 with face brick of the type shovm in my copending application Serial No. 550,336 filed July 13, 1931.
The extended commercial adoption and use of face brick in place of the old full size brick for building purposes created a problem in connection with the use of brick for corners which would conform to, in point of space occupied, and appearance, the face brick used in the flat wall surfaces. To use a full size brick at the corners of a structure where facing brick was used for the wall surfaces in order to secure the proper full width appearance at such corners, meant the projection inwardly from the rear surface of the corner of approximately half of the width of the brick. This was objectionable because frequently face brick are used to cover over an old structure, perhaps of wood construction, and the space between the wall and the narrow face brick,
would not permit the use of a full sized brick at the corners.
To meet this problem I have provided a corner face brick which requires no more lateral space than do the narrow wall face brick and which can be made in the process of manufacture to conform in all respects to the appearance as regards surface, of the wall face brick.
My invention embodies not only the corner face brick itself but the method and apparatus for making the same.
Various objects and advantages in details will be apparent as the description proceeds, reference now being had to the figures of the accompanying drawing forming a part of this application and wherein like reference numerals indicate like parts.
In the drawing:
Figure 1 is a side view of a portion of my improved brick making apparatus illustrating one stage in the method of manufacture.
Figure 2 is a front view of the expressing and trimming dies through which the plastic brick material passes.
Figure 3 is a perspective view of a completed brick according to this invention, before separation for use.
Figure 4 illustrates the corner face brick with the section removed to adapt it for the purpose intended.
Figure 5 is a detail perspective view of the completed brick in a different position from that shown in Figure 3, namely, in the position and condition in which it passes through the die in strip form.
Figure 6 is a detail perspective view illustrating the use of corner face brick under actual conditions of construction.
The reference character I refers to a suitable container for the plastic brick material supplied by any suitable apparatus for mixing and forcing the plastic material therethrough. One end of m the container I is flanged as at 2 and removably secured to the flange as by the bolts 3 is the flange 4 of an expressing die 5 provided at its front end with a flanged plate 6. The die 5 is provided with a passage 1 therethrough which at the plate 6 1 defines the approximate size and shape of the brick to be formed, by the opening 8. This passage is wider at the rear end of the die 5, the side walls of the opening diverging rearwardly as at 9 so that at the point of communication with the discharge end of the receptacle 1, such passage is relatively large and then tapers down to the size of the opening 8.
Suitably provided, preferably integral with the sides of the die member 5 and centrally of the passage 1 therethrough and adjacent the point of communication with the end of the recess l, is a supporting bar H] to which is secured a member ll carrying a plurality of forwardly extending pins [2, in the instance here shown, 3 of such pins, which pins project through the passage 1 to a point just beyond the opening 8 in the plate 6, for a purpose to be described.
A ribbon of plastic brick material I3 is forced by any suitable means through the die 5 and outwardly through the opening 8 in the front end thereof on to a moving belt 14 preferably of an endless character, trained over a pulley wheel 15 and driven by any suitable means. This conveyor belt it may be supported at various points throughout its length as by additional idler rollers l6 mounted in suitable frames l1.
Secured to the front of the plate 6 as by screws l8 and stretching vertically on such plate across the ends of the opening 8, are the trimming wires l9 and 20. These wires are positioned just inside of the ends of the opening 8 whereby to trim off the extreme ends of the ribbon of plastic material l3 as it is expressed through the opening 8 and on to the conveyor belt 14. These trimming wires perform the twofold function of trimming the ends of the plastic material to exact size and also of providing the sides of the plastic material passing therethrough with the desired texture or a mat finish desirable in bricks of this type.
Likewise secured on the front of the plate 6 as'by the screws 2| and extending across the top of the opening 8 is a third trimming wire 22 so positioned as to trim off the top of the ribbon of plastic material also for'the purposes of governing size and providing the mat texture finish for the completed brick. The thin trimmings of the plastic material from the ends and top of the ribbon l3 may be guided away from the die and from the ribbon in any suitable manner, these trimmings being removed entirely from the plastic material.
In order'that these corner facing bricks may be of the same width or thickness except at one end; as the wall face brick such as-described and claimed in the above mentioned'copending ap-" ''plication, a fourth wire 23 is provided, secured at one end to screw 24 on the plate 6 and at the other end to-the end of one of the pins l2 extending through the die 5 and outwardly through v the opening 8. The selection of the pin l2 to which the inner end of the'wire 23 is attached depends upon the size of the portion of the brick it is desired to cut by this wire 23. 'Still another wire 25 is secured at one end by the screw 26 on the plate 6 and extends vertically and in parallel relation to the wire. 20 and is secured 'at'its opposite end to the same pin l2 to which the Wire 23 is anchored. Obviously therefore, as the plastic material I3 is expressed through the die and through the opening 8, the wires 23 and 25 cutthe same, the wire 23 cutting the ribbon of plastic material substantially centrally for a portion of the length of the opening 8 and the "wire 25 cutting the ribbon vertically at a point spaced from one end of the opening 8,, these two cuts joining at the opening 21 provided by the pin l2 as the material is pressed through the die.
It will be obvious, of course, the wires 23 and 25 may be a single length wire merely turned around the pin l2.
It will thus be seen that by thismeans the horizontal and vertical cuts made by the wires 23 and 25 define a portion of the brick which 7 is eventually to be removed before use, as shown clearly in Figures 3 and 5, leaving a brick of the shape shown in Figure 4 for use at the comers r of a building construction. The pins I2, of course,
all provide the openings 21 through the brick V 6 material which facilitates subsequent separation of the section to'be removed and which, of course,
i do not interefere with the appearance of the brick inasmuch as these openings are on the inside surface in use, as shown clearly in Figure 6. r
The ribbon of plastic material l3 after being so cutby the wires 23 and 25 moves alongwith the conveyor l4 as before described and due to pending upon the size of brick desired and these are then baked or otherwise hardened to form the finished product. When the bricks are ready.
for use, merely tapping the section defined bythe cutting operation of the wires 23 and 25 serves to remove such section leaving the brick as shown in Figure 4. V

will be seen that the outside appearance is that 01' a fullsized brick while as a matter of fact the corners are of the same thickness as the 2Q narrow face brick'used in the. wall surfaces;
The removable section of the brick has been esignated at 28 and the portion used in actual construction indicated at 29. By my process these sections are left intact with their cut surfaces 25 adhering together during all the steps of manufacture and transportation to the point of'use which serves as a protection to the corners and edges and greatly reduces loss through breakage, etc.
r 30 It will also be noted that by virtue of the trimming wires I9, 20, and 22, the surfaces of the corner face brick which are exposedare of the same texture and mat finish as the wall face brick as manufactured in accordance with said copending application Serial No. 550,336.
Of course, changes and modifications may be made by way of detail without departing from the spirit and scope of my invention. I do not shown and described other than by the appended claim.
I clalm: r A corner facing brick comprising a substantially rectangular block having a cut through its body for a portion of its length and a second cut at an angle to and intersecting said first cut, the portions of said block divided by said cuts adhering together and being separable by tapping, one of said portions extending from a point spaced from one end of said block and from substantially half the width thereof, for the rest of the length of the block and leaving a substantially L shaped corner facing brick.
