This invention relates to a device oi the kind mounted together with perforating blades in the form of a printing machine for operating said blade in co-operation with an impression cylinder (for instance as indicated in the co-pending application Serial No. 726,187) or other suitable ele- -ment, and the invention consists in the provision of a casing containing a spring-controlled operating bolt Which operates the blades and which for this purpose is advanced at each printing operation or periodically by a cam Wheel mounted on a rotary shaft, the latter being rotated intermittently through the medium of a pawl and ratchet mechanism and a plunger which is depressed at each printing operation and which also acts directly on the bolt for advancing the latter Whenever such movement is initiated by the cam wheel.

The device comprises a casing I iitted with a cover 2 and adapted to be mounted in the forme of a printing machine together with perforating blades by means of which the printed Web is perforated. The blades are normally maintained in inoperative position Within the form and are moved into operative position as they pass under the impression cylinder. This is eiected by means of a plunger 3 which projects from' the casing I for contact either with the impression cylinder or other suitable element and which advances an operating bolt I5 for the displacement of a slide by means of which the appertaining blade or blades are brought into operative position. The slide is held between guides 23 which engage in a recess 22 in the casing I in register with an aperture through which the reduced end I6 of the bolt is adapted to advance. A spring I8 bears against a shoulder I'I on the bolt and tends to maintain it in retracted position. The
regular or periodic advance of the bolt is effected through the medium of a cam wheel I 3 which is exchangeably mounted on the free, hexagonal end of a shaft 5 supported rotatably in a H partition 6 and in one of the walls of the casing. 5 The cam Wheel is provided with teeth adapted to engage a shoulder I9 on the bolt. The shaft is also fitted with a ratchet wheel I having twelve teeth for engagement with a pawl 8 pivotally connected to the plunger 3. A spring I0 bears l0 against the ratchet Wheel and acts as a detent. Another spring II bears against the pawl and holds the latter in contact with the wheel. Both springs are fastened by means of screws 9. The plunger 3, which is controlled by a spring 4, car- 15 ries a bevelled member 2| which is normally in position to engage in a notch 24 in the bolt I5. The latter has also an inclined cam face 20 with which the member 2 I is adapted to co-operate for advancing the bolt after it has been started by 20 the cam Wheel.
The plunger 3, on striking against its abutment, Will be depressed by the latter, and the movement of the plunger will be initially transmitted by the pawl 8, shaft 5, and cam Wheel I3 to the bolt I5. 25 After a partial movement of the latter the cam face 20 of the bolt will be engaged by the bevelled member 2I of the plunger, ,and the further advance of the bolt will thereupon be effected by the plunger directly, thereby relieving the pawl 30 and the cam Wheel of Work and preventing undue Wear oi. the teeth. When the plunger recedes after having passed the abutment, the cam wheel Will be retained by the spring 4IIl in its advanced position, and the shoulder I9 is then free to move 35 over the back of the tooth which advanced it, so that the bolt can be restored by the spring I8 to its initial position (see Fig. 4)
In the arrangement shown in Fig. 2, the cam Wheel I3 is provided With the same number of 40 teeth as the ratchet wheel 'I, and the bolt will therefore be advanced for perforating the web at each printing operation. Cam Wheels of diiferent shapes may be employed so that the perforation will be eiected periodically in various 45 Ways. Fig. 8 shows a Wheel I3' presenting double spacing of the teeth so that perforation of the web will take place at every other printing operation. Where there is no tooth on the cam Wheel for engagement With the shoulder I9, the 50 cam Wheel moves idly, and the member 2| of the plunger enters the notch 24 in the bolt and secures the latter against displacement. Fig. 9 shows another form of cam Wheel I3 by means of Which every third printing operation is carried 55 out without perforation, and Fig. 10 shows a Wheel I 3" by means of which two successive printing operations accompanied by perforation, are followed by two operations without perforation. Other arrangements may be resorted to.
Figs. 1l and 12 show an arrangement wherein the pawl and cam wheel are relieved of work from the commencement of the movement. This Y is eiected by providing the plunger 3 with a slidable cam member 25 which is supported by a spring 26 and which remains in permanent contact with the cam face 2Q of the bolt I5. The spring 26 is too weak to move the bolt initially `by itself, and therefore, if the cam wheel should move idly during a printing operation, the member 2| of the plunger enters the notch 24 in the bolt and secures the latter against displacement. Otherwise the movement of the bolt will be initiated by the joint action of the cam wheel and of the member 25, and further movement will be carriednout by the engagement of themember 2| with the cam face 2Q.
The cam wheel is covered by a sliding door I4 which can be removed for an exchange of wheel.
Owing to the simplicity of the device it can be made very small and yet strong enough to meet all requirements.
I claim:
1. A device for operating perforating blades mounted in the form of a printing machine, comprising a casing, a spring-controlled operating bolt in said casing, a shaft in the casing, a'ratchet wheel on the shaft, a spring-controlled plunger projectingY from the casing, a pawl on the plunger `adapted to co-operate with said ratchet wheel for imparting partial rotation to the shaft at each depression of the plunger, a toothed cam wheel mounted exchangeably on the shaft, a shoulder on the bolt adapted to co-operate with the teeth of said cam wheel for advancing the bolt, and means enabling the plunger to act directly on the boltfor advancing the latter whenever such advancing movement is initiated by the cam wheel.
2. A device for operating perfor-ating blades mounted in the form of a printing machine, comprising a casing, a spring-controlled operating bolt in said casing, a spring-controlled plunger projecting from said casing, a rotatable shaft in the casing, a ratchet wheel on the shaft, a pawl on the plunger adapted to co-operate with said ratchet wheel for imparting partial movement to the shaft .at each depression of the plunger, a toothed cam Wheel mounted exchangeably on the shaft, a shoulder on the bolt adapted yto- `co-.operate -with the teeth of .said cam wheel for advancing the bolt, a bevelled member carried by the plunger, and a cam face on the bolt I adapted to be engaged by said bevelled member for advancing the bolt after Vits movement has been initiated by the cam wheel, the bolt having a notch adapted to be engaged by said bevelled member for locking the bolt if no movevment is imparted to the latter by the cam Wheel EUGEN FRLICH.
