Platen machines.-In stamping- apparatus for endorsing &c. of the type comprising a hand-stamp supported by parallel links 8, 9, so that it can swing over from an ink-pad 2 on to a stamping base 3 and combined with counting- apparatus for registering the number of impressions, mechanism is provided for preventing fraudulent, unauthorised, or harmful use of the apparatus. A visible counter 36 is advanced each time the stamp is swung back after an impression, and ratchet-and-pawl mechanism is provided to prevent the stamp being returned to the base- 3 from an intermediate position to print impressions without registering them. A ratchet 20 and a segmental guide plate 22 are fixed on the pivot shaft 11 of the link 9, and, as the stamp moves over to the left; a spring pawl 21 mounted on the machine frame first of all rides over a plain part of the ratchet 20, then a pin 25 on the pawl rides over the back of a catch 24 so that the pawl is raised off the ratchet, next. the pin 25 engages a groove 23 on the outer edge of the guide 22 to keep the pawl disengaged, and finally drops through a radial slot 27 into an inner groove 26 so that the pawl engages the ratchet teeth and locks the stamp against backward movement. Towards the end of the return stroke, the pawl 21 escapes from the groove 26 by raising the catch 24 and returns to normal position. The stamp is in two parts, an inner part 30 carrying the usual dies and an outer casing 31 normally projected beyond the dies by means cf springs 32 and adapted therefore to clamp the sheet on the base 3 and prevent its withdrawal until the pawl 21 is in proper engagement with the ratchet. The apparatus is enclosed in a casing comprising a fixed part 14 and a hinged part 60 adapted to be secured in the closed position by a pin 64 locked in position by a padlock. Slits 65 are provided in the two parts of the casing for the introduction of the sheet, and the top of the casing has a slot 66 for the movement of the stamp-handle 5. Also, a bar 74 adapted to obstruct the stem 4 of the stamp and prevent use of the apparatus may be pushed through the casing and locked by a padlock against removal. Auxiliary parallel links 15, 16 connected by a link 17 may be provided outside the casing, a lug 18 on the link 16 forming a stop for the link 17 to prevent the stem 4 dropping down on to the ink-pad 2 and damaging it if the stamp should be removed. Counting-apparatus.-The counter 36 is actuated by a cam 40 engaging the forked end 39 of a lever 37 pivoted at 38, the cam 40 being fixed on the pivot shaft 10 of the link 8. Number-printing apparatus.-Number wheels form part of the stamp 30, and these are advanced through the intermediary of a slide, which is reciprocated in a guide by a pawl pivoted to the stamp. The pawl carries a pin 53, which ridesover the outer surface of a cam 54 on the link 9 when the stamp is swung over to the left and so raises the pawl out of action, and, when the stamp swings back rides over the inner surface of the cam, operates the pawl, and advances the number wheels.
