Application April 12, 1934, Serial No. 720,268
Claims.
The invention relates to spark arresters, and has for its object to provide a device of this character which will effectively trap and extinguish sparks issuing from a chimney without 5. lessening the efiiciency of the chimney.
A further object is to provide a device of this character having novel means for mounting it on a chimney.
A further object is to provide a device of this character with a novel supporting and reinforcing member.
A further object is to provide a device of this character with an open ended screen member whose sides comprise a plurality of relatively angularly disposed portions which increase the area thereof without decreasing the efiiciency of the chimney.
With theabove and other objects in view, the invention resides in the combination and arrangement of parts as hereinafter set forth, shown in the drawing, described and claimed, it being understood that changes in the precise embodiment of the invention may be made within the scope of what is claimed without departing from the spirit of the invention.
In the drawing:
Figure 1 is a top plan view of the device illustrating the outer screen member cut away on line aa.
Figure 2 is a view of the device in side elevation illustrating the outer screen member cut away on line bb.
Figure 3 is a fragmentary perspective view of the outer screen member.
Figure 4 is a perspective view of the base of the inner screen member.
Referring to the drawing, which illustrates the preferred embodiment of the invention, the numeral 5 designates a chimney, on the upper end of which the spark arrester is adapted to be mounted.
The spark arrester comprises an outer member 6 and an inner member 1. Outer member 6 comprises a plurality of vertical side members 8 and a top member 9, all of which are formed of a suitable metal or wire screen. A heavy metal or wire bar I I] is bent to a configuration (preferably rectangular) conforming to but larger than the configuration of the lower end of member 6, the ends of said bar It] being angularly outwardly extended at H. The lower ends of the sides 8 of the outer member 6 are disposed within and bent around bar ID to secure said bar thereto, although the same may be secured in any suitable or desired manner; and bar I0 thus forms a supporting and reinforcing frame for outer member 6. At each of its sides the frame bar IE3 is provided with an upwardly di rected intermediate off-set portion l2, for purposes to be hereinafter set forth. A plurality of a; vertical plates I3 are secured to each of the sides 8 of member 6 to project below frame It. Plates I3 extend within member 6 and bear against the sides 8 thereof, and are secured to place by bolts M which pass therethrough and through the 10 screen and a suitable washer or plate l5 which bears on the screen side member 8 exteriorly thereof. The projecting lower ends of the plates l3 engage the outer sides of chimney 5 and are preferably secured to said chimney by bolts I6 15 to support said outer member 6 in operative rela- I tion thereto with the frame It disposed substantially in the plane of the upper end of the chimney and off-sets 12 thereof disposed above the upper end of the chimney.
The inner member 1 of the device comprises a rectangular base ll, preferably formed of sheet metal, which is disposed in face contacting engagement with the upper face or end of chimney 5. Base H has a central opening therein of a size and shape conforming substantially to that of the chimney opening, which base opening is defined by angularly upwardly and inwardly directed flanges 58. A screen member I9, 01 general rectangular plan outline, is fixedly secured to base ll and flanges i8 by soldering or other suitable means. Member I9 is formed of a shape wherein its sides taper inwardly and upwardly at 2B, thence outwardly and upwardly at 2|, thence inwardly and upwardly at 22, and terminate in outwardly and upwardly directed portions 23. Member I9 is open at both of its ends, and its upper end is spaced below top membar 9 of outer member 6 when the device is operatively positioned on the chimney. The lateral dimensions of member l9 are less than ofv member 6 at all points thereof, whereby said member is spaced inwardly of said member 6 at all sides thereof. The major portion of the inner screen member H3 is disposed inwardly of a vertical projection of the inner edges of base 1'! and of the inner faces of the walls of the chimney.
In its use, the device serves to arrest passage of sparks issuing from the chimney, the inclined sides of screen member l9 serving, when wind 50 blows sparks and soot thereagainst, to stop or catch the same, while the top 9 of outer member 6 serves the same purpose where the sparks or soot are not directed against or caught by the sides of member I9. Soot may also pass up- 55 1y between member l9 and sides 8 of outer member 6 and out beneath the off-set 12 of frame It]; this same passage through the device to the atmosphere assuring the necessary chimney draft at all times, whereby chimney efficiency will not be lowered by the device when the same has collected large amounts of soot thereon. The off-set l2 also provides a passage between outer member 6 and the chimney through which wind may pass to clean the device of soot col-.
lected thereon. The extended end portion ll of bar frame l0 may be connected with a suitable electrical conductor 25 leading to the ground, whereby the device serves as a lightning conductor as well as a spark arrester.
