Description

Patented Sept. 8, 1925.
UNITED` STATES 'SAM W. SHER, 0F CHICAGO', ILLINOIS LAMP-SHADE SUPPORT.
Application filed November 20, 1922, Serial No. 601,987. :Renewed April 9,V 1925.
To all who/m, it may concern.'
Be it known that I, SAM W. SHER, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of the city of Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in a Lamp- Shade Support; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear,'and exact description of the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the numerals of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
This invention relates to a lamp shade support and particularly to a type of lamp shade support which is of simple construction and which may be economically manufa'ctured.
It is an objectof the present invention to provide a lamp shade support wherein the shade supporting arms are constructed from a single continuous strip of material which is secured to an attaching means by an improved method which eliminates thenecessity ofsoldering, brazing and the like.
It is also an object of this invention to provide a lamp shade support wherein the sup porting arms may be readily yadjusted to support lamp Shades of various constructions and sizes.
It is an important object of this invention to provide a device of the kind described which is durable, which maybe easily attached and adjusted, and which may be economically manufactured.
Other and further important objects of the present invention will be apparent from the disclosures in the specification and the accompanying drawings.
The invention (in a preferred form) is illustrated in the drawings and hereinafter more fully described.
On the drawings: Y
Figure 1 is a fragmentary side elevation, with parts broken away, showing a lamp shade support embodying the principles of this invention in use.
Figure 2 is a plan view of the lamp shade support.
Figure 3 is a section on the line 33 of Figure 2.
Figure 4 is a view similar to Figure 3 illustrating a modified form of lamp shade support.
As shown on the drawings: v
The improved lamp shade support of this invention comprises a threaded metal annulus 1 in which the threads are preferably formed by stamping and which is provided at its upper end with a flange 2, said flange 2 being provided with a plurality of inwardly extending notches or cut out portions 3. The lamp shade supporting arms are formed from a continuous wire member 4 which is engaged around the annulus 1 directly beneath the flange 2 and which is secured in association with said flange and annulus by bending 'back portions 5 of said flange be tween the cut out portions 3 in the manner indicated in Figures 2, 3 and 4. The lamp 'shade is supported on arms 6 which are formed from the continuous wire mem'- ber 4 and which extend outwardly from said member and are preferably bent upwardly in the manner shown in Figures 1 and 3. Said arms 6 are adapted to be engaged underneath and outside a ring 7 which is ordinarily formed in the top of a lamp shade 8. The annulus 1 is ordinarily screwed on the top of a lamp supporting portion 9 of the lamp base 10, although said annulus Ina-y of course be secured to said portion 9 in any suitable manner. To facilitate the engagement of the arm 6 with certain types of rings 7 it is often desirable that the outerl ends of the arms be bent to form suitable hook portions, one form of said hook portions being designated by the reference numeral 12 in Figure 4.
It will be apparent from the foregoing description that this invention provides a very inexpensive lamp sha-de support which may be easily attached to usual forms of lamp bases and which may be easily adjusted for various size rings 7 by simply bending the arms 6 upwardly and inwardlyor downwardly and outwardly. The improved securing means afforded by the. portions 5 eliminates the necessity of soldering, brazing or similar operations. Making the arms 6 from a continuous wire member affords an inexpensive and effective construction therefor.
I am'aware that numerous details of construction may be varied through a wide range without departing from the principles of this invention, and I therefore do not purpose limiting the patent granted heregaged around said annulus, the portions of on otherwise than necessitated by Jdie prior the flange between the notches therein being 10 art. bent around said member, the ends of said I claim as my invention: member being disposed Within one of the A device v-of the class described, `comprisbent .portions l'of Asaid flange.
