The invention in certain of its aspects relates to inking pads adapted to be used for supplying ink to stamps in the Well known manner, and in certain other aspects the invention relates to having a cover construction and releasable catch to receive the inking pad above described. Inking pads have heretofore been proposed wherein` the absorbent material was contained Within metal frames adapted to be inserted in suitable containers, but such metal frames have substantialy reduced the active area of the pad over which the stamp could be electively inked, and one of the objects of the present invention is to provide an inking pad of the above type which will avoid this objection. Other objects of the invention are to provide an inking pad and container therefor of such construction that the pad will be securely and yet removaby held in proper position with respect to the container in a simple manner; and to provide a container torted portions, will assist in maintaining the necessary tautness.
In the use of an inking pad of the above nature the ink will permeate throughout the entire outer surface of the pad, and the stamp 5 will be adequately inked even though applied adjacent the edge of the pad, as often happens when stamps are operated rapidly. The padk also is exceedingly simple and economical in construction, and the two inking surfaces made l0 up by the envelope 3 are kept smooth, and the absorbent pad 2 is kept in proper shape by the frame I, over long periods of use.
An inking pad of the above type may be placed in a container which, as shown in Figs. 3 and 4, 15
is preferably made of rubber or rubber-like material, and provided with a base I having a somewhat yieldable ange 8 projecting up from its upper surface to provide a recess 9 adapted catch I1 is reinforced by a exible metal piece 20 as shown in Fig. 4.
The cover l2 is preferably provided with a raised portion or rib 2| conforming in shape to the iiange 8 which encloses the pad, and pressing down on such flange when the cover is in closed position, to seal the pad from the air, and insure that the cover does not press down on the pad and thereby become soiled.
Whenever the pad is to be used, it may be easily exposed by drawing back the catch l] which will cause the cover l2 to ip to open position.
While a specific form of the invention has been described above, it will be understood that lmany changes may be made therein without departing from its principles as set forth in the appended claims.
What I claim is:
1. A stamp pad having a relatively stiff frame open on both faces, absorbent material enclosed by said frame and having its opposite faces lying substantially in the planes of the respective faces of the frame, and a fabric sheath enclosing said frame and overlying the opposite faces of said absorbent material to hold the absorbent material in its aforesaid position, said frame having one or more resilient portions exerting tension on the fabric envelope to hold the latter taut.
2. A stamp pad having a relatively stiff frame, `absorbent material enclosed by said frame, and a fabric sheath enclosing said frame and absorbent material to hold the absorbent material in position therein, a rubber like base having a recess adapted to receive the pad and the frame of the pad being provided with one or more projections adapted to engage the Walls of the base which bound said recess to hold the pad removably in position.
3. A pad holder having a base provided with 5 a flange adapted to enclose a pad, and a cover associated With said base and adapted to overlie a pad contained in the base when the cover is in closed position, said cover having side- Walls adapted to enclose said ilange When the l0 cover is in Vclosed position and also having a vraised portion engaging the top of said flange when the cover is in closed position, to space the part of the cover enclosed by said raised portion, lfrom the area of the base which is enl5 closed by said ange.
4. In combination a stamp pad having a relatively stiff frame, absorbent material located within and bounded by said frame, a base member having a recess adapted to receive Said pad 20 and provided With elastic Walls surrounding said recess which are stretched around said frame when the pad is placed in position in said re- VSESS.
