SLOTTED CLIP FOR HOLDING TYPE.

This invention relates to printing devices, and has for an object the provision of a resilient clip within which selected printing stamps may be positioned so that a plurality of such stamps can be utilized at one time to reproduce upon a surface a copy of the characters printable by the stamps in selected arrangement.

Another object of the invention is to provide a clip as above described and a block of resilient material of dimensions similar to those of the printing stamps intended to be used with the clip and insertable in the clip to position the printing stamps in respect thereto.

Another object is the provision of a device as above described which is very inexpensive to manufacture, simple in its operation and which has no parts susceptible to wear'or breakage resulting from ordinary use. The clip is designed primarily for use in conjunction with the printing frame disclosed in my co-pending application, Serial No. 250,474. filed January 30, 1928, but it is to be understood that the clip of the present application is adaptable also for handling printing stamps of a wide variety whether used in conjunction with the above mentioned printing frame or not.

The-invention possesses other objects and features of advantage, some of which, with the foregoing, will be set forth in the following description of the preferred form of my invention which is illustrated in the drawings accompanying and forming part of the specification. It is to be understood that I do not limit myself to the showing made by the said drawings and description, as I may adopt variations of the preferred form within the scope of my invention as set forth in the claims.

In its preferred embodiment, thedevice of my invention comprises a clip designated in its entirety at 6, which is preferably formed from a strip of suitable resilient material such as spring brass or its equivalent. The clip is formed to provide a back 7 having sides 8 extending downwards therefrom. Each side 8 is provided adjacent its lower edge with an inwardly extending head 9. The clip 6 is designed to be usedin con-' junction with selected printing stamps 16 each of which comprises a body 1'? having a rubber or other character 18 in reversed relationship to its true form upon the bottomthereof, in accordance with *the usual practice in constructing rubber stamps. The printing stamps are intended to be used in conjunction with the conventional inking pad to moisten the characters 18 with ink, after which by applying the printing stamp 16 to a surface'the character in its true form may beproduced upon that surface. In order to aid in the selection of the desired printing stamp 16 each of the stamps preferably has reproduced upon the back thereof a copy 19 of the designor character print able thereby. V

To use the device of my. invention certain of the printing stamps are selected and placed within the clip 6 between the sides 8 in the necessary arrangement to produce the grouping desired. The natural resiliency of the material of which the clip is made will serve to retain the printing stamps 16 in position, or, if it be desired, a conventional elastic band 21. may be slipped over the grouped printing stamps 16 tohold them together as clearly shown in Figures 2 and 3. The provision of the slot 11 permits observation of the copies 19 of the characters printable by each of the printing stamps 16 so as to readily determine the word group of letters or designs printable as a result of the particular arrangement of printing stamps selected. After the printing stamps 16 have been so positioned Within the clip 6 they are intended, to be applied to an inking pad and applied to the surface upon which the design is to produced, in a manner similar to that in which the conventional rubber stamp is used. The presence of the inwardly extending bead 9 serves the double purpose of aiding in retaining the printing stamp 16 within the clip by presenting a restricted area of contact between itself and the stamps, and aiding in holding the clip and the assembled printing stamps 16 as the result of the groove 22 on the outside of the clip, which provides a convenient finger hold.

The modification shown in Figures 5 and 6 comprises a clip 26 comprising a back 27 having sides 28 extending downwards therefrom similar to the sides 8 and similarly provided with inwardly extending beads 29. In addition, however, the clip 26 is also pro vided with ends 31 extending downwards from the back 27. A block 82 of resilient material and of breadth similar to the corresponding dimension of the printing stamps 16 is provided. When using the block 32 the selected group of printing stamps 16 is inserted into the clip 26 so that one of the outside blocks bears against one of the ends 31. The block 32 of resilient material is then placed into the clip and slid longitudinally thereof until bearing closely against the other outside printing stamp 16. Thus means are provided for efi'ectually retaining the printing stamps 16 in their proper positions within the clip 26.

I claim:

1. A printing device comprising in combination a plurality of printing stamps, each of said stamps having reproduced upon the back thereof a copy of the character printable thereby, a retaining clip for releasably holding certain of said printing stamps in selected arrangement, said clip being formed from a strip of resilient material to provide a back having sides and ends extending therefrom between which selected printing stamps may be clamped, said back being provided with a longitudinally extending slot through which said character reproductions may be viewed, and a block of resilient material receivable between said sides to position said stamps within said clip.

2. A printing device comprising in combination a plurality of printing stamps, each of said stamps having reproduced upon the back thereof a copy of the character printable thereby, a retaining clip for releasably holding certain of said printing stamps in selected arrangement, said clip being formed from a strip of resilient material to provide a back having sides and ends extending therefrom between which selected printing stamps may be clamped, said back being provided with a longitudinally extending slot through which said character reproductions may be viewed, and means for positioning said stamps within said clip.

A printing device comprising in combination a plurality of printing stamps, each of said stamps having reproduced upon the back thereof a copy of the character printable thereby, a retaining clip for releasably holding certain of said printing stamps in selected arrangement, said clip being formed from a strip of resilient material to provide a back having sides and ends extending therefrom between which selected printing stamps may be clamped, said back being provided with a longitudinally extending slot through which said character reproductions may be viewed.

4. A printing device comprising in combination a plurality of printing stamps, each of said stampshaving reproduced uponthe back thereof a copy of the character printable thereby, a retaining clip for releasably holding certain of said printing stamps inselected arrangement, said clip being formed from a strip of resilient material to provide a back having sides extending therefrom between which selected printing stamps may be clamped, said back being provided with a longitudinally extending slot through which said character reproductions may be viewed, and means for positioning said stamps within said clip.
