My invention relates to sash holders. An object of the invention is to provide a device for holdingthe window sash in any desired position whereby the use of pulleys, weights, and cords now in common use or of suspension springs may be dispensed with. In carrying out my invention, I provide a recess in the side of the window sash with a resilient member in the recess for applying friction between the sash and the Window jamb and means for adjusting the tension of the resilient member. A particular object of the invention is to provide a construction such that the adjustment can be quickly made without removing the sash or holder.
The full objects and advantages of my invention will appear in connection with the detailed description thereof and the novel'features embodied in my inventive idea will be particularly pointed out in the claims.
In the accompanying drawing which illustrates a practical embodiment of my invention, Fig. 1 is an elevational sectional view showing the device applied to a window. Fig. 2 is a view in vertical section on the line 22 of Fig. 1. Fig. 3
is a side elevational view showing the device before application to a window. Fig. 4 is a View in vertical section on the line 4-4 of Fig. 1.
My invention is shown in connection with a window sash S supplied with glass G and slidably mounted in the customary guides secured to the jamb J. The sash S in one of its sides is provided with a recess in which is placed a retainer box I0, one end of which is closed except for an internally screw-threaded boss [2. Slidably mounted in the box I 0 is a cup-shaped member [4 having a closed outer end and an inner open end provided with an inturned flange l5 within which is a plate It. Compression-springs l8 are interposed between the plate l6 and the closed end of the member I4. A screw threaded member 20 is threaded through the boss I2, the outer end of the member 20 having secured thereto two spaced washers 22 which engage opposite sides of the plate IS. The inner end of 5 the member 20 is provided with a notch by means of which a screw driver may be readily employed for turning the screw. The inner end of the hole in the sash through which the screw passes is finished ofi with a bushing 24.
50 The operation and advantages of my invention will be readily understood in connection with the foregoing detailed description and the accompanying drawing. It is obvious that with the springs l8 under compression as shown in Fig. 1,
55 the member M will engage the jamb J and force the sash into close frictional engagement with the jamb at the opposite side of the window. It is also obvious that the member 20 may be readily turned by engaging the notch in its head by means of a screw driver or similar implement. When the member 20 is turned in the direction to feed it outwardly, the springs l8 will be placed under greater tension, and when the member 20 is turned in the opposite direction, the tension of 5 dow sash may be accomplished with the least possible effort for this type of holder. When the device is installed, the tension of the springs may 5 be easily adjusted for each particular window according to the space between the sash and jamb in order to bring about the desirable condition just mentioned above. Furthermore if the sash should swell or shrink, the same desirable 20 result may be readily accomplished. The adjustable feature therefore provides for holding the sash in desired position and for easy operation for all conditions which may be encountered. It is further apparent that the holder will 25 keep the sash from rattling in the wind. It is obvious that the recess in the sash, the retaining member and the jamb engaging member may be made of any desirable shape.
I claim: 30
1. In a window sash having a recess in its side, a retaining member mounted in said recess, a window jamb engaging member slidably mounted in said retaining member and smoothly guided thereby, said engaging member having a closed 35 outer end and an open inner end provided with an inturned flange, a plate within said flange, compression springs interposed between said plate and said closed end, a member screw threaded through the inner end of said retaining mem- 40 ber, and two spaced washers secured to the outer end of said member engaging opposite sides of said plate.
2. In a window sash having a, recess in its side, a retainer box having an open outer end mounted in said recess, a cup shaped member telescopically mounted in said retainer box, said cup shaped member having a closed thin outer end which frictionally engages the window jamb when the cup shaped member is partly extended out of said retainer box, a plate adapted for in and. out movement within said retainer box, a compression spring device interposed between said plate and said closed end of the cup shaped member, and an adjusting member screw threaded through the inner end of said retainer box and having its outer end rotatably engaging said plate.
