HINGE FOR TYPE CASTING MACHINES Filed June 29, 1933 {ride 212302 I J'farnag/ Patented Oct. 8, 1935 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE 3 Claims.
This invention relates to a stereotype casting machine, and particularly to a. hinge structure for such a machine.
As is well known, such casting machines comprise a pair of rather large rectangular plates which have comparatively fiat adjacent surfaces brought into close parallel relation when the plates are inclosed or casting position. One plate, usually the upper plate, is adapted to swing away from the other plate so that said plates extend at a wide angle when in open or discharging position. v It is an object of this invention to provide a simple, inexpensive and efi'icient construction of hinge for such a pair of plates.
It is a further object of the invention to provide a hinge for such a pair of plates constructed and arranged to hingedly connect said plates and insure that the plates will swing to open position smoothly and be held in proper open position.
It is more specifically an object of the invention to provide a hinge for such a pair of plates, comprising ings of novel construction projecting from adjacent ends of said plates connected by pintle means and cooperating with suitable stop means.
These and other objects and advantages of the invention will be fully set forth in the following description made in connection with the accompanyingdrawing, in which like reference characters refer to similar parts throughout the several views and in which:-
Fig. 1 is a vertical section taken on line I-I of Fig. 2 as indicated by the arrows;
Fig. 2 is a top plan view as seen from line 22 of Fig. 1 as indicated by the arrows;
Fig. 3 is a view similar to Fig. 1 showing the plates in open position;
Fig. 4 is a vertical section taken on line 44 of Fig. 6 as indicated by the arrows, showing a modified construction;
Fig. 5 is a. View of the plates shown in Fig. 4, swung to open position, an intermediate position being indicated in dotted lines; and
Fig. 6 is a plan view as seen from line 6-4: in Fig. 4 as indicated by the arrows.
Referring to the drawing, particularly Figs. 1 to 3, one plate I0 is shown as the upper plate of a stereotype casting machine as illustrated, which is superimposed on or engages the other plate I I. These plates are customarily of rectangular form and only one lower corner is shown in Fig. 2. A lug I2 projects from the end of plate I ll, said lug having its top surface substantially flush with the top surface of plate I0 and curving downwardly somewhat on its top at its outer end. The lower surface of lug I2 has'a flat or plane portion I2a at its outer end and said under side is curved at I21) and connected to the inner or bottom surface of plate ID by a small fillet. Plate II has a projection or lug l3 at one end which is below or alined with lug I2 longitudinally of said plates. Lug I3 has a flat outer surface I3a adapted to form a stop surface and to be engaged by surface 52a when plate I0 is in open position as shown in Fig. 3. As shown in Figs. 1 and 3, lug I3 has a top surface I31) extending substantially at a right angle to surface I312 and forming a corner with said surface. The surface Ito and said corner are adapted to be engaged by the under side of lug I2 as plate It] swings to open position. Another lug I4 is provided, carried by and projecting from one end of plate II. Lug M is disposed at one side of lug I2 and closely adjacent thereto. As shown in Fig. 1, lug l4 extends substantially to the top of lug I2, the same having a semi-cylindrical top and said lug has extending therethrough an elongated slot Ma. A pintle rod I5 is provided which extends through slot Ma. and also through an aperture formed in lug I2, which substantially fits said rod. A washer It encircles rod I5 adjacent the inner side of lug I4 and is held in such position by a split key I "Ia extending through rod I5. It will be understood that there is one of the lugs I2, I3 and I 4 at each side of the plates so that the parts shown in Fig. 2, which shows the lower left hand corner of the plates, are duplicated at the lower right hand corner of the plates.
In operation, when the plates are in closed or casting position, the parts occupy the positions shown in Figs. 1 and 2. When it is desired to open the plates, plate I 0 is swung about the axis of the pintle I5 and surface I 2b rides on surface I32) or the corner formed thereby and rod I5 moves in slot I ia. The swinging movement of plate I0 continues until surface I2a engages the surface I3a as shown-in Fig. 3 and plate I ii is thus held in this position by gravity.
Referring to Figs. 4, 5 and 6, plates I0 and II are shown and plate I0 has projecting therefrom, adjacent one corner thereof, a lug I'I. Lug I I has its top surface substantially flush with the top of plate I0 and curves downwardly somewhat at its top adjacent its outer end. A lower surface of lug I1 is substantially fiat and substantially fiush with the lower surface of plate I 0. Lug I8 projects from plate II beneath lug IT, or alined with lug I 1 longitudinally of the plates. Lug I8 has its bottom surface substantially flush with the surface of plate I I, said bottom surface of said lug curving upwardly towards its outer end. The top surface I 8a of lug I8 is disposed somewhat below the top or inner surface of plate II, the end of said plate adjacent said lug thus forming a shoulder constituting a stop surface Ha. Said top surface I8a curves upwardly toward its outer end terminating some distance inwardly of the end of lug I8, said lug thus having a fiat top portion lying closely adjacent and parallel to: the flat under portion of lug I! when the plates are in closed position. The distance between these two portions of lugs l1 and I8 will be determined by the thickness of the plate being cast between members In and II.
A lug i9 is provided carried by and projecting from the end of plate I I, said lug being disposed closely adjacent one side of lug I1 and as shown in Fig. 6, at the outer side thereof. Lug l9 has substantially vertical inner and outer sides and has a semi-cylindrical top. Lug I9 has an elongated slot 19a therein and as shown in Fig. 4, said lug projects somewhat above the top of lug I! when the plates are in closed position. A pintle rod 20 is provided, the same extending through slot I90. and through an aperture substantially fitting the same in lug ll. Rod 28 is threaded at its outer end to receive a nut 2|, which engages the outer side of lug [9.
The parts I! to 2| are reproduced at the other side of the plates. Fig. 6 shows the lower left hand corner of the plates and there will thus be lugs l1, I8 and I9 at the lower right hand corner of the plates and rod 20 will extend through the lugs I1 and I9 at the right hand corner of the plates and have another nut 2| threaded thereon engaging the outer side of the other lug l9.
In operation, when the plates are in closed position, the parts occupy positions as shown in Fig. 4. When the plates are to be moved to open position, plate It! is swung about the axis of pintle 20. The end of lug l'i swings inwardly and rides on the surface Isa. Pintle 2% moves vertically in slot Mia and plate Ill moves to fully open position with the lower flat side of lug ll engaging the stop surface I la and said plate is held in this position by gravity. In the modification shown in Figs. 1 to 3, plate in is swung back to closed position with surface l2b engaging the surface I3b and corner of lug I3, pintle rod [5 moving in slot [4a. In the form shown in Figs. 4, 5 and 6, the plate I!) swings back to closed position with the end of lug ll closely adjacent the end of lug l8 and rod 20 moving in slot l9a.
The slots [4d and 19a are provided to accommodate movement of pins l5 and 20 respectively. The stereotype plates cast between plates l and H are of diiferent thicknesses and filling strips of diiferent thicknesses are used between plates Ill and II. The pins I and 20 can take different positions in slots Ma and Na respectively in accordance with the plates being cast.
' From the above description it is seen that applicant has provided a simple and efiicient structure of hinge for the plates on a stereotype casting machine. The structure is easily and inexpensively made in connection with the plates and the swinging movement of the movable plate is controlled so that it swings easily and smoothly to open position. The swinging plate thus swings to open position without jar or shock and is held in open position by gravity. The novel structure has been amply demonstrated in actual practice and has been found to be successful and efiicient and the same is being commercially made. It will, of course, be understood that various changes. may be made in the form, details, arrangement and proportions of the parts, without departing from the scope of applicants invention, which generally stated, consists in a device capable of carrying out the objects above set forth, in the parts and combinations of parts disclosed and defined in the appended claims.
What is claimed is:--
1. A hinge for the plates of a stereotype casting of said plate and having a corner formed by said surface and another surface adjacent the top of said plate, said other plate also having a lug projecting from said end having a portion extending transversely of said first mentioned lug, said portion having an elongated slot therein extending substantially at right angles to the top surface of said other plate and a red extending in and substantially rigid with said first mentioned lug and passing through said slot, said curved surface of said first mentioned lug sliding over said corner on said other plate as said plates are swung to open position and said substantially fiat surface on said first mentioned lug engaging said inclined surface on said other plate when the plates are in open position.
2. A hinge structure for the plates of a stereotype casting machine, which plates have substantially flat surfaces and are arranged to be positioned with said surfaces parallel and in close proximity comprising a lug projecting from one plate and having an elongated slot therein, a pintlev extending through said slot, a lug projecting from the other plate and disposed at one side of said lug, said pintle extending into said last mentioned lug and substantially fitting therein, said last mentioned lug having a stop surface beyond said pintle, said latter plate being swingable and a third lug projecting from said first mentioned plate having a stop surface and an edge at one end of said surface, said third lug being alined with said second mentioned lug and said edge being engaged by said second mentioned lug as said last mentioned plate swings to open position, said step surfaces being in contact when said plates are in open position.
3. A hinge structure for the plates of a stereotype casting machine, which plates have substantially fiat surfaces and are arranged to be positioned with said surfaces parallel and in close proximity, one of said plates being movable and the other stationary, having in combination, a stop means on said stationary plate, a lug projecting from one end of said stationary plate and having an elongated slot therein having its longitudinal axis extending substantially perpendicular to the substantially flat surface of said plate, a pintle extending through and movable in said slot, a lug projecting from the end of said movable plate at one side of said lug in which said pintle is received and substantially fits, said latter lug having a stop surface at the side of said pintle remote from said plate, said movable plate swinging about the axis of said pintle, said stationary plate also having a portion engageable by said last mentioned lug as said movable plate swings to open position adapted to partially bear the weight of said movable plate, said stop surface on said second mentioned lug moving into engagement with said stop means to hold said plates in open position.
