u rrEb STATES PATENT OFFICE 2,016,269 I HOLDER FOR TOOTHPASTE TUBES Minor W. .Iohnson' and James J. Lester, Nashville, Tenn., assignors, by direct and mesne assignments, of one-half to said Lester and onehalf to A. L. Hanover .Refiled for abandoned app ication Serial No. 708,178, January 25, 1934. This application June 11, 1935, Serial No. 26,066
2 Claims. (Cl. 221'60) and this application is a reflle of forfeited application, Serial No. 708,178, which was allowed May 3, 1934.
An object of the invention is to provide a. holder of this character which can be economically and cheaply constructed, which can be readily secured to a wall or other suitable support and which will be practical and efiicient in operation.
The invention together with its objects and advantages will be best understood from a study of the following description taken in connection with the accompanying drawings wherein:
Figure 1 .is a front elevational view of the holder.
Figure 2 is a side elevational view thereof.
Figure 3 is an elevational view of the opposite side of the holder.
Figure 4 is a top plan view thereof.
Figures 5 and 6 are sectional views taken substantially on the lines 5-5 and 6-6 respectively of Figure 1.
Figure 7 is a perspective view of a roller shifting member. A t
Figure 8 is a perspective view of a spacer plate to be hereinafter more fully referred to.
Figure 9 is a plan view of the blank from which the holder is formed, and
Figure 10 is a perspective view of a tooth brush holder forming part of the invention.
Referring to the drawings by reference munerals it will be seen that ill indicates generally a metallic or other suitable blank which is cut, shaped and dimensioned to provide a holder having a back plate or wall, H and opposed sides l2 formed by folding the blank on the parallel fold lines I 3. At the upper and lower ends of the back plate or wall II are provided apertured attaching flanges l4 whereby provision is made for securing the holder on the wall or other suitable support by suitable fastening elements l5.
Supported between the side members 12 are corrugated rollers l6, l1. Roller is has pintles l8 provided therefor in the sides l2 of the holder while the roller I! has its pintles journalled in slots l9 provided on extensions 20 formed on the outer edges of the sides I2.
For turning the roller IS in the proper direction there is provided on one end thereof a suitable handle 2| and for transmitting movement of the roller IE to the roller I! there is provided on the end'of the roller l6 opposite to the handle 2| a gearwheel 22 that is in mesh with a gear wheel 23 provided on a corresponding end of the roller H. In this connection it will be noted that the teeth of thegear 23-are longer than the teeth of the gear 22 so as to preclude disengagement of the gears as a result of a spacing of the roller I'I relative to the roller l6.
The roller I1 is yieldably urged toward the 10 roller I6 through the medium of plates 24 that are provided with apertures 25 through which extend the pintles of the roller IT. The plates 24 are provided with spaced parallel coextensive arms 26 that'are provided at their free ends 15 with hooks 21. Engaged with the hooks 21 are one end of coil springs 28. The coil springs 28 have their free ends provided so as to engage suitable hooks 29 struck out from therear wall or back plate II. It will be apparent that the springs 28 will normally urge the plates 24 toward the back plate H of the holder and consequently corrugated roller l1 toward the roller 16 to engage between the rollers the paste tube 30 in a manner clearly suggested in Figure 5. In 25 this connection it will be noted that corrugations on the rollers I6 and I! so engage the tube 30 that when the handle 2| is turned in one direction for rotating the rollers l8, I! in relatively opposite directions tube 30 will be 30 drawn upwardly between the rollers in a manner to press the tube as suggested in Figure 5 for forcing the contents of the tube from the neck thereof.
The sides l2 of the holder are secured in fixed 85 spaced relation through the medium of a. spacer plate 3| and the ends thereof are provided with suitable slots 32 through which are passed lips 33 which are subsequently flattened out in a manner .to secure the ends of the plate 3| to the sides l2 as suggested in Figures 1 and 4.
In actual practice, the holder is secured to a wall or other suitable support and the sealed end of the tube 30 is inserted upwardly between the rollers l6, l1 and is secured in position therebetween by reason of the roller ll under action of the springs 28 on the plates 24 being forced toward the roller I6. when it is desired to force some of the contents from the tube 30 thehand wheel 2| is rotated in a clockwise direction causing the rollers l6, II to rotate in reverse directions relative to one another for drawing the tube 30 upwardly between the rollers to thereby compress the tube in a manner. to force some of the contents of the tube through the outlet neck 01' the tube on to the tooth brush or the like. i
A suitable casing or pocket forming member 34 is also provided, and at the open side thereof (which side is disposed against the rear plate ll of the holder as shown in Figure 4) the lateral flanges or sides of the casing 34 are provided with laterally projecting lugs 35 that engage in notches 36 for securing the casing 34 in position on the holder and in a manner to accommodate the tooth brush or brushes 31 as shown in Figure 5. The notches 36, as shown in Figure 9, are provided in the upper edges of the sides l2 immediately adjacent to, and at one side of the crease lines l3.
To prevent retrograde movement of the rollers l6, I! the handle equipped end of the roller I6 is provided with a ratchet wheel 38 with which is engaged the end of a dog 39 pivotally mounted on the adjacent side member I2 of the holder as shown in Figure 2.- Yieldably engaging the end of the dog 39 with the ratchet wheel 38 there is provided a suitable spring lo'which is connected at one end to said side l2 and has a free end engaging the dog 39 as also shown in said Figure 2.
Having thus described our invention, what we claim as new is:
1. A holder tor'toothpaste tubes comprising a back plate having spaced parallel side members projecting'therefrom, a pair of rollers iournaled between said side members, one or said rollers mounted for lateral movement toward and away from the other or said rollers, plates engaging 6 the pintles or said one roller, springs'connecting said plates with the back plate 01' the holder in a manner to urge said one roller toward said other of said rollers for engaging and compressing between the rollers the tube, gearing con- 10 necting said rollers in a manner to cause the rollers to rotate in relatively opposite directions to cause the paste tube to move upwardly between the rollers, and means connected with said other of the rollers for rotating it. 15 2. A holder for toothpaste tubes comprising a supporting structure, a pair of rollers Journalled in the supporting structure, one 01' said rollers mounted for lateral movement toward and away from the other of said rollers, plates ens s ns 80 one roller, springs connecting said plates with vthe supporting structure in a manner to urge said one roller toward said other of said rollers for engaging and compressing between the rollers the tubes, and means whereby the rollers may 25 be rotated in relatively opposite directions to cause the tube to move upwardly therebetween.
