IMPROVEMENT IN LAMP-EXTINGUISHERS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent N 0. 201,411 dated March 19,1878; application filed February 8, 1878.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ALBERT HALL, of Oypress Hill, in the county of Kings and State of New York, have invented a new and Improved Extinguishing Attachment to Lamp Burners, of which the following is a specification:
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 represents a side elevation of a lamp-burner with my improved extinguishing attachment. Fig. 2 is a vertical transverse section on line 1 w a, Fig. 3; and Fig. 3 is a top view of the same with cone removed.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts.
The object of this invention is to furnish for lamp-burners of all kinds an improved extinguishing attachment that may be readily placed on the wick-tube or detached therefrom, and be sold separately from the burner, it accomplishing the extinction of the flame in a perfectly reliable manner.
The invention consists of a slide-tube placed over the wick-tube, and having a cap or cutoff hinged by a lever-frame thereto, and operated by bottom cams, a crank-lever, and a string passed through one of the holes of the bottom plate of the burner.
Referring to the drawings, A represents a -slide-tube, that is fitted over the wick-tube of the burner, and which has hinged to its lower end a lever-frame, B, to the upper part of which the cap or cut-01f O is applied. The lever-frame B is extended below its hinge, and formed in the shape of cams, or inclined or rounded-01f portions a, which bear on the bottom plate of the burner when the extinguisher is in position on the wick-tube, and throw the lever-frame and cap sidewise of the same, as in Fig.1. Acrank-fiame,l),is firmly attached to the lever-frame, and extended in front of the slidetube A, an operatingcord, E, being applied to a central eye, I), of the le= ver frame, and passed through one of the per forations of the bottom plate of the burner, so that by pulling thereon the leverframe and slide-tube are readily raised on the bottom cams by the leverage of the crank frame, and thereby not only the slide-tube raised above the wick-tube, but simultaneously the cap or cut-oft swung over the upper end of the slidetube, so as to reliably extinguish the flame.
By releasing the operatingcord the cap and lever-frame drop back by their own Weight, and return the slide-tube into the lower position. on a level with the wick-tube.
The entire extinguishing device may be readily removed for cleaning the lamp-burner and replaced in position for use, being com plete in itself, and not attached in any part to the lamp-burner. It has, therefore, the advantage of being sold separately from the burner, and applied to any lamp-burner in use, provided that a size fitting the wicktube is obtained.
Having thus fully described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- The combination of the-slide-tube A, the lever-frame B hinged to its lower edge, having cam a at one end, the eye b at the middle, and the cut-off O at the other end, the crank-frame D attached to the frame B, and extended in front of slide-tube, and the operating-cord E passed through a perforation in the bottom plate of burner, as shown and described, to form a detachable extinguisher for lamp-burners.
ALBERT HALL.
