Abstract

An apparatus designed to horizontally suspend a speed bag frame and striking bag without permanent attachment to a wall or a ceiling. The apparatus consists of a support bar which can be mounted horizontally within any doorframe. The speed bag frame is affixed to the support bar via several knobs, which minimizes physical alterations to walls or ceilings.

Description

    BACKGROUND OF THE INVENTION
  • 1. Field of the Invention
  • The present invention relates to personal fitness devices and more specifically to a portable speed bag apparatus, which can be mounted in a door frame. The apparatus consists of a support bar which can be mounted horizontally in any door frame. The speed bag apparatus is affixed to the horizontal support bar via several knobs, thus allowing for the speed bag apparatus to be suspended in the air for use, without attaching to a wall or ceiling.
  • 2. Description of the Related Art
  • Various types of apparatus are identified in prior art for supporting a striking bag. U.S. Pat No. 5,733,193 describes a system for providing entertainment by allowing a user to hit a speed bag. Speed bags are commonly used by boxers and martial arts practitioners as a training apparatus and as a source of exercise or hand-eye coordination enhancement. The existing speed bag art generally requires the mounting of a base to a ceiling or wall by bolts or other similar securement means or to another structure which is similarly bolted to a ceiling or wall. Mounting such a structure is cumbersome and difficult because the structure must be held in place against the ceiling or wall in order to be mounted. Furthermore, bolting the speed bag structure to a ceiling or wall essentially renders the speed bag structure a permanent fixture. U.S. Pat. No. 5,788,613 has an apparatus providing for portable and adjustable use of a speed bag which can be secured to a base such as a boxing heavy bag.
  • While these respective apparatus meet their particular objectives and requirements, the need remains for a device which allows for greater portability of speed bags during travel and flexibility for installation of speed bags in homes, other dwellings or buildings with limited space for exercise machines.
  • SUMMARY OF THE INVENTION
  • The present invention meets the needs described above, by providing a speed bag apparatus which can be mounted to a support bar which can be secured to hang from any door frame, with minimal assembly by an individual. The apparatus comprises means for supporting a speed bag foundation to a support bar which is horizontally fixed within any size door frame. The invention comprises approximate L-shaped brackets which are mounted to a circular base, to which is attached a speed bag. The approximate L-shaped brackets can be attached, via knobs, to the frame support bars which are secured horizontally within the frame of a door.
  • BRIEF DESCRIPTION OF DRAWINGS
  • Having described the invention in general terms above, reference will now be made to the accompanying drawings, which are not necessarily drawn to scale
  • FIG. 1 shows a top down view of the speed bag apparatus
  • FIG. 2 shows a frontal view of the invention
  • FIG. 3 shows a left side view of the invention
  • FIG. 4 shows a bottom up view of the speed bag apparatus
  • DETAILED DESCRIPTION
  • As follows, a detailed description that represents the greatest contemplated modes of function for use of this invention. The purpose of said description serves to illustrate the general use and principle of the invention as a portable means of physical exercise.
  • Referring to the attached pictures, the invention may be temporarily affixed in a residential doorway utilizing the front support bar (#3), and the back support bar (#5) and adjustment knobs (#6), allowing for adjustment to fit virtually any wall thickness inside of a residence. The back doorframe support (#4) would then be placed atop the door trim or molding. This particular configuration may require the door to be removed from the hinges, but allows for a non-permanent installation method, not requiring anchors, screws or bolts to be required which would damage walls or surfaces.
  • In the event it would be necessary or not possible to remove the door from its hinges, the optional flat back support bar (#5 b), can be used to brace the invention in the space between the door and frame between the hinges. This allows for use in places where the user may not have the ability to remove the door, along with the optional longer door support (#4 b), allowing for variation in door opening sizes.
  • The front support bars allows the base (#1), to extend past the door opening, hence increasing the range of mobility and operating area. The top base also serves as support and as a surface for the operating of the speed bag attachment (#15). The speed bag can be removed from the base to allow for storage in a portable case for later use or for travel.
  • The tubular supports and bracing, is constructed of lightweight ¾″ pipe, allowing for strength and support while performing exercises, while remaining durable and lightweight for convenient portability. The initial assembly of the invention requires a limited number of tools, wrench and screwdriver, which should be included in simple form, and takes approximately 7-10 minutes to assemble. Once assembled, the installation into a location for use takes approximately 2 minutes and requires no tools or permanent apparatus for attachment to surfaces.
  • While the invention has been detailed in description and depiction, it will be understood by those skilled in design and development that the changes and improvements may be made without loss of original form, functionality, or design intent.

Claims (8)

1. An apparatus for suspending a speed bag circular frame without permanent attachment to a wall or ceiling; comprising such circular frame orthogonally attached to one of several support bars having a width and length to be disposable between the frame of a door.
2. 2 approximate “L” shaped brackets attached orthogonally to the top of the circular frame holding the speed bag
3. The 2 approximate “L” shaped brackets are attached orthogonally to said support bars by adjustment knobs depicted in such drawings
4. The front and back support bars are flat bars having a width which will fit virtually any wall thickness inside a residence.
5. An optional flat back support bar allows for such bar to be affixed horizontally between a door and frame, between the hinges, thus eliminating a need to adjust or remove the door from said hinges
6. adjustment knobs are utilized to affix the support bars to the doorway, thus eliminating the need for any screws, anchors or bolts to alter or damage any walls or surfaces
7. The speed bag is removable from the support base, thus allowing for easy portable storage of said speed bag.
8. The approximate “L” shaped support bars are constructed of lightweight pipe of approximate ¾″ width, which allows for strength, durability and portability of the apparatus
