Patented Sept. 10, 1935 UNETED STATES PATENT OFFICE COVERED CONTAINER WITH SEALING CLOSURE THEREFOR Claims.
My present invention relates to covered containers generally, wherein substances of different kinds may be stored and confined even so closely as to be hermetically sealed therein.
5 The specific form of embodiment of my invention herein illustrated is a tilted glass display jar fitted with a special cover and its appurtenances .for securing it to the jar, but, as indicated in the foregoing general statement, my invention is not restricted even to a display jar, and may be varied somewhat widely in respect to the cover and the details of mechanism for effecting operative assemblage of the cover and jar.
In another aspect, my invention comprehends broadly a novel sealing closure for a container and its cover when closed, in order to form between them a substantially air tight joint.
What constitutes my present invention, in its various aspects, will be hereinafter described in detail and succinctly defined in the appended claims.

Figure I is a diametrical vertical section of the upper portion of a container, showing its cover closed thereon, and mechanism for operatively uniting the cover and container.
Figure II is a plan view, on a reduced scale, of the band and hinge shown in Fig. I, and showing bends that are included, but not shown, in the band indicated in Figure I.

Referring to the numerals on the drawings, l indicates, by way of example of any specimen of its class, the body of a tilted display jar or con- 10 tainer which is preferably made of glass.
In the form illustrated, the container is provided with a wide mouth, which in that or in any other form of container, is preferably surmounted by an annular rim 2 that is made in- 1 tegral with the body I. In respect to the specific form of container illustrated, the rim 2 is superposed upon a neck 3 which, being of shorter diameter than the rim 2, defines, in part, an annular recess which constitutes one element of 20 means for uniting a cover 4 to the container.
The definition of said recess may be completed by an annular flange 5, projecting outwardly beyond the upper part of the neck 3. The said flange surrounds the mouth of the container and serves with the neck 3 to support the rim 2.
Over an external face or zone 6 on the rim 2, fits loosely an annular peripheral flange i that is provided about the periphery of the cover 4 from which it depends.
The flange I and cover 4 may be made in one piece, of any suitable material, preferably sheet metal that may be stamped, pressed, or otherwise shaped into desired form.
An annular gasket-seat 8 is, by any suitable method, formed in the top of the cover so as to form, in part, means for securely incorporating an annular gasket 9 that is made of soft india rubber or other suitable yielding substance, with the cover, whose peripheral flange 1 serves to support the outside of the gasket when it is fitted in place on the seat 8. The height of the flange i is substantially equal to that of the gasket 9. An inturned and then everted annular flange i9, extending from the flange 1 partially across the width of the gasket, tends to confine the gasket against the seat 8, but leaves one projecting corner Ii, or curved edge, as its shape may be, exposed within the inner circular edge of the flange l 0. By the means just described, support for the gasket is provided on three sides of it.
On its fourth side, the gasket is supported by an annular plate l2 which is secured to the cover 4 as by an annular base l4, andcooperates with the flanges l and ID to form a chamber so as to 2 I I I 2,013,855
confine securely at all times and firmly support the body of the gasket upon the seat 8 within the cover 4. The height of the plate i2 is such as to leave exposed below the corner I l a part of the surface of the contiguous gasket that is substantially equal in height to the width of the surface of the gasket left exposed by the transverse extent of the flange H], as above described.
The exposed portion of the gasket at its corner II or the like, substantially as specified, constitutes a yielding elastic annular cushion, which, when the cover 4 is forcibly closed over the rim 2, makes contact at all points of its periphery with the annular bevel face or zone 6 on the outside of the rim 2. A cam-acting latch-lever l6, pivotally mounted on a bail II that is suitably hinged at its opposite ends to the cover 4, as indicated at l8, serves, by engagement with the bottom of the flange 5, as shown in Figure I, to compress, with hermetically sealing effect when desired, the corner ll of the gasket 9, or its equivalent, against the outside face of the zone 6, the curvature l9, preferably provided at the base of the zone Where it meets the flange 5, contributing to said sealing effect. The presence and sealing function of the gasket 9 might be dispensed with if hermetical sealing were not essential, but they are generally preferred because they render the container available for all purposes instead of for restricted use only.
For hinging the cover 4 in operative disposition to the container I, I prefer to employ ametallic flexible band that encircles the neck 3, and which, when snugly secured about the neck, is confined thereon by the extending of the flange over the neck or by substantially equivalent means. 7
The said band may be made of a length of flat or ribbon-like metal, for which the illustrated form of neck 3 is specially adapted, subject to modification to correspond with other form of band, or of a length of round wire, or of plural lengths of wire coordinated in parallel relationship. The ends of the band, of whatever description employed, are united by means of variable description, such, for example, as those suggested below.
In Figure III, a complementary pin and loop connection 2| is shown as one example of means for holding together the united ends of a flat band 22. For use with such a band, a hinge member having knuckles 2 3 for hinging the cover i to the band, may be employed, it having a flat plate 25 for insertion and confinement between the outside of the neck 3 and the band 22.
Figures IV and V show a loop and band connection 26 as a substitute for the pin and loop connection 2].
Figures VI and VII show at 2'! a modified form of hinge member having a knuckle 29, and comprising parallel keeper-plates 30 and 3|. Over one edge of one of said plates, for instance plate 30, a bend 33 of a flat band 34 is hooked. Over the oppositely disposed edge of the plate 3!, in Figure VI, the band 34 is passed, which, after being drawn taut, is fastened by the bending of the band indicated at 35. The band 34 is finally secured by a terminal bend of it, indicated at 36, over the edge of the plate 3| that is opposite to that in Figure VI already indicated.
Figures VIII and IX show a modification of the subject matter of Figure VI in which a band 38, made of wire instead of flat metal, is hooked to a hinge member 31, in a manner similar to 'that shown in Figure VI.
Figures X and XI show a slight modification of the hinge member at 39; Figure XII shows a further modification thereof; and Figures XIII and XIV show a still further modification.
The different modifications above referred to 5 are deemed to be readily comprehensible upon comparison of the several figures of the drawings without further description.
In the various forms of bands shown in Figures IV to XIV, inclusive, a manual pull, aided by use of a pair of pliers upon the end of the band shown therein, respectively, may be employed, mainly, if not entirely, for exerting tension upon the band after it is fitted in place on the neck 3, or the like, of a container.
In Figure II, transverse bends 30 of the band are shown as means for tightening the band about the neck 3. For that purpose, sides of the respective bends 49 may be squeezed together in permanent flexure by use of a pair of pliers.
In Figure XII, a wire band 4|, as an example of any wire band, may be tightened by the twisting of a loop 42 provided in the band, which twisting may be effected by a pair of pliers.
In view of the foregoing, further description of I the operation of my invention, in respect to its various forms of embodiment, is believed to be unnecessary in order to enable one skilled in the art to fully comprehend the same.
What I claim is:
1. The combination with a container, and a. cover hinged thereto, of a mouth-defining neck on the container, a yielding annular gasket substantially rectangular in cross section, exposed at its inner corner and, fixedly secured to the cover, and means for detachably securing the cover in gasket-compressing position over the neck, and means for securing the gasket to the cover consisting of an annular flange on the cover, an inturned flange thereon engaging the gasket on three sides, and an annular plate fastened to the cover and supporting the fourth side of the gasket.
2. An article of manufacture consisting of a round metallic cover for a container comprising 45 an annular gasket-confining chamber, and an annular yielding gasket having a portion thereof protruding between separated adjacent walls of said chamber, said gasket-confining chamber comprising an annular flange about the perimeter of the cover, an annular inturned flange on said flange, and an annular plate of a height less than that of the gasket secured to the cover against the gasket.
3. The combination with a container, and a cover hinged thereto, of a mouth-defining neck on the container surmounted by an annular rim having an external inclined continuous zone, a yielding annular gasket substantially rectangular in cross section and having its inner lower corner protruding fixedly secured to the cover, and means for detachably securing the cover in gasket-compressing position over the zone.
4. The combination with a container, and a cover hinged thereto, of a mouth-defining neck on the container surmounted by an annular rim having an external inclined continuous zone, a yielding gasket, partly exposed, fixedly secured to the cover, and means for detachably securing the cover in gasket-compressing position over the zone, the means for securing the gasket to the cover consisting of an annular flange on the cover, an inturned flange thereon engaging the gasket on three sides, and an annular plate fastened to the cover and supporting the fourth side of the gasket.
5. The combination with a container having a neck surmounted by an annular rim having an external, inclined, continuous zone, of a cover hinged to the container, an annular gasket, means for securing the gasket to the cover so as to present one corner only of the gasket in position to make contact with the zone aforesaid, and means for forcing the said corner of the gasket against the inclined face of the zone and thereby compressing the gasket in a direction diagonal to a cross section of the gasket.
