With the foregoing and other objects in view, The flange 2 is adapted o be disposed withreference is now made to the following specificain the neck of the bottle with the bead I4 thereof positioned in continuous peripheral contact against the inside surface thereof and with the bead l3 seated upon the rim defining the mouth of the bottle. The bead 14, when in engagement with the inner surface of the neck of the bottle, functions to compress the flange inwardly at an angle thereto so that the outer peripheral face l5 ,of the flange above the bead I4 is maintained in spaced relation from the inner face of the neck of the bottle to hold the bead I3 under tension and in sealing relation upon the rim of the bottle and the lips of the slit l l in resilient abutting relation to prevent accidental spillage of the contents of the bottle therethrough.
The combined bottle closure and wiper, illustrated in Figs. 5 and 6, includes a flat flexible resilient member cut, molded or stamped from a sheet of semi-vulcanized rubber or other equivalent resilient material and which member comprises an end portion l8 adapted to cover the mouth of a bottle to close the same and is provided with an elongated slit l9 therethrough for the insertion of a comb into the bottle to receive an application of the liquid contained therein and to remove the excess liquid therefrom when the comb is withdrawn from the slit.
The member also includes an apertured portion 20 of a size to snugly engage about the neck of the bottle and which portions 58 and 29 are connected by a bight portion 2i and have outwardly extending tab portions 22 and 23 respectively provided with interengageable fastening means such as snap fasteners 24 and 25, for connecting the ends of the member together with the portion I8 thereof in stretched condition upon the rim of the bottle to cover and seal the mouth opening thereof and functioning to hold the lips of the slit l9 under tension and in abutting relation.
In the form of the invention illustrated in Figs. 7 and 8 of the drawing, the combined bottle closure and comb Wiper includes a flat flexible resilient member 28 which is cut or molded from semi-vulcanized sponge rubber or other equivalent material and which is adapted to engage over the mouth of a bottle for closing the same. The member 28 is provided with an elongated slit 29 adapted to receive a comb inserted endwise and flatwise therethrough so as to receive an application thereto of the liquid contained in the bottle and to wipe the excess therefrom When the comb is removed from the slit. The member 28 is removably secured in covering relation with the mouth of the bottle by means of a metal clamp 30 having a pair of oppositely disposed spring leg members 3| outwardly flared at their free ends and adapted to engage against the inside face of the neck and breast of the bottle.
The clamp 30 also includes a bight portion 32 adapted to engage over the upper surface of the member 28 with the slit 29 exposed through the elongated aperture 33 therein with the opposite ends 34 thereof being bent to clampingly engage about the opposite edge portions of the member 28 with the inturned portions 35 thereof embedded in the undersurface of the member 28 so that the spring leg members 3| function to maintain the member 28 in sealing relation on the rim of the bottle, while the bight portion 32 and the end portions 34 and 35 of the clamp 39 function to maintain the lips of the slit 29 in abutting relation.
What is claimed is:
1. In a combined bottle closure and comb wiper, a flat flexible resilient member having an elongated slit extending therethrough adapted to receive a comb for the application thereto of the liquid contained in the bottle, and for wiping the excess liquid therefrom when the comb is removed from the slit, and said member having a flexible resilient peripheral flange provided with a pair of outwardly extending spaced peripheral beads, said flange being adapted to engage within. the neck of the bottle with one of said beads overlying the rim of the bottle and the other bead engaging against the inside face of the neck thereof for removably securing the said member in covering relation with the mouth of the bottle for sealing the same and for maintaining the lips of the siit in close relation to prevent spillage of the contents of the bottle therethrough.
2. In a combined bottle closure and comb Wiper, a flat flexible resilient member having an elongated slit extending therethrough adapted to receive a comb for the application thereto of liquid contained in the bottle and the wiping of excess liquid therefrom when the comb is drawn through the slit, said member being adapted to engage about its peripheral edge with the rim of the neck of the bottle to close the mouth opening of the bottle, and tension means associated with said member and adapted to engage against the inner face of the neck of the bottle for drawing and maintaining the said member in resilient sealing relation on the rim thereof and for maintaining the lips of the slit in close relation.
3. In a combined bottle closure and comb wiper, a flat flexible resilient member having an elongated slit extending therethrough adapted to receive a comb for the application thereto of liquid contained in the bottle and the wiping of excess liquid therefrom when the comb is drawn through the slit, said member being adapted to engage about its peripheral edge with the rim of the neck of the bottle to close the mouth opening of the bottle and said member having a flexible resilient peripheral flange provided with a peripheral bead at its free edge, said flange being adapted to be disposed within the neck of the bottle with the said bead engaging against the inside face of the neck thereof and with the flange compressed inwardly to provide a space between the outer peripheral face thereof and the inside face of the neck of the bottle above the said bead so as to provide a suction to maintain the said member in scaling relation upon the rim of the bottle and for maintaining the lips of the slit in close relation.
