Description

Sept- 1935. B. w. GREENHOE 2,013,271
STAFF MOUNTING DEVI CE Filed April 27, 1954 device, whose middle portion 4 presses on the bars rear side and itsside portions 5, 5 press on Patented Sept. 3, 1935 Nr Price 3 Claims.
The present invention relates to mounting devices ior flag stafis and the like; and its object is to provide an improved device for detachably mounting such a staii on a horizontal bar.
This and any other and more specific objects hereinafter appearing are attained by, and the invention finds preferably embodiment in, the device particularly described in the body of this specification and illustrated by the accompanying drawing, in which:-
Figure 1 is an elevational view of a flag staii and a device for detachably mounting the same vertically on a horizontal bar;
Figure 2 is a front view thereof;
Figure 3 is a side view of the same;
Figure 4 is a top View of the device, the staff being sectioned on line 4--4 of Figure 2; and
Figure 5 is an axial sectional view of a portion of the device, illustrating a modified construction thereof.
In the drawing is shown a vertical staff l carrying a flag 2, detachably mounted on the horizontal bumperbar 3 of an automobile or the like, by means of my device.
This device is made of ,a continuous spring wire bent to form a helical middle portion 6 adapted to receive and tightly hold the lower end of the staff, and vertical side portions 5, 5 on the opposite sides of the middle portion, spaced therefrom and approximately parallel therewith, these side portions being connected by a bottom bight portion ii comprising an approximately horizontal middle part 1 and parts 8 at the opposite ends of part 7, this bight portion 6 extending rearwardly toward the middle portion 4 (as particularly well seen in Figure 3) so as to. engage the under edge 9 of the bumper bar 3 as shown in Figure 1. Preferably the bights parts 8 thus extend inclinedly rearwardly-downwardly so as to wedgingly engage said edge.
The side portions 5, 5 extend at I6, it over the upper edge I! of the bumper bar as seen in Figure 1. The helical middle portion 4 springs toward the plane in which lie the side portions 5, 5 so that the bumper bar is yieldingly held by the the bars front side. I
A screw I2 is desirably'provided ,for holding the staff in the helicalportion 4, being threaded in the lower end of the staff and its head engaging the lower end of said helical portion, As shown in Figure 5, the lower three or four coils l3 of the helical portion 4 of the device are of less diameter of the helix than are the upper coils, so
that the lower end of the staff may be screwed into said lower coils, such screwing process forming a shallow screw thread I4 in the stafis lower end. In this Figure 5, the screws head 15 extends over the entire lower end of the helical por- 5 tion.
Iclaim: i
1. A device for detachably mounting a staif in vertical position on a horizontal bar support, made of spring wire and comprising a helical 10 middle portion adapted to receive and hold the stafi, a pair of side portions parallel with, and spaced from, the middle portion and at its opposite sides respectively, a bottom bight portion connecting the side portions and spaced below the lower end of the middle portion, a horizontal portion extending between and connecting the upper end of the middle portion and the upper end of one of the side portions, and a horizontal portion extending from the upper end of the 20 otherside portion toward the upper end of the middle portion, both of said horizontal portions being adapted to rest on the upper edge of said bar support, the bight portion being adapted to engage said bar supports under edge, the bar support being pressed between the middle portion on one side of the bar support and the side portions on the other side of the bar support in the mounted position of the device on the bar support. 30
2. A device for detachably mounting a staff in vertical position on a horizontal bar support, made of spring Wire and comprising a helical middle portion adapted to receive and hold the staff, a pair of side portions parallel with, and 35 spaced from, the middle portion and at its opposite sides respectively, a bottom bight portion connecting the side portions and spaced below the lower end of the middle portion, a horizontal portion extending between and connecting the 40 upper end of the middle portion and the upper end of one of the side portions, and a horizontal portion extending from the upper end of the other side portion toward the upper end of the middle portion, both of said horizontal portions 45 being adapted to rest on the upper edge of said bar support, the bight portion being adapted to engage said bar supports under edge, the bar support being pressed between the middle portion on one side of the bar support and the side portions on the other side of the bar support, the bottom bight portion being downwardly-outwardly inclined to press the bar support between the bottom bight portion on the under edge of the bar support and the said two horizontal portions on the upper edge of the bar support in the mounted position of the device on the bar support. 7 I g I 3. Adevice for detachably mounting a stafi in vertical position on a horizontal bar support, made of spring wire and comprising a helical middle portion adapted to receive and hold the staff, a pair of side portions parallel with, and spaced from, the middle portion and at its opposite sides respectiyely, a bottorn bightportion connecting theside portions and spaced below the lower end of ithe'rriiddle portion, ahorizontal portion. extending between and connecting the upper end, of the middle portion and the upper end ofone of the side portions, and a horizontal portion extending from the up per end of the other 2,o13,271* Y i" F side portion towar portion, both of said horizontal portions being adapted to rest on the upper edge of said bar support,'the bight portion being adapted to engage said bar supports under edge, the bar sup port being pressed between the middle portion on one side of the bar support and the side portions theupper end of the middle on the other side of the bar support in the'mounted position of the device on the bar support, "the lower part of the helical middleportion being of less diameter than the upper part of said helical portion so that the 'staiis lower, end'inay be freely. slid intosaid upper part and then screwed into said lower part to securely hold the stafi.
