Description

Aug. 27, 1935. H. B. BROWN COMBINED THERMOMETER AND SUPPORT Filed June 5, 1934 INVENTOR .H.' BRAINABD Bnowu BYAQWM ATTORNEY Patented Aug. 27, 1 935 COMBINED THERMOMETER AND SUPPORT H. Brainard Brown, Rochester, N.'Y., assignor to Taylor Instrument Companies, Rochester, N. Y., a corporation of New York Application Jun, 1934, Serial No. 729,106
2 Claims- This invention relates toa thermometer and more particularly to a combined thermometer and support.
For many purposes, especially in a refrigerator,
it is desirable to suspend a thermometer from a shelf made of spaced bars or rods. In the past, it has been the practice to provide a. thermometer designed for such use, with a single hook for suspension from a bar or rod of the refrigerator shelf. However,'a thermometer sus-- pended in this manner is not securely held in position and consequently is easily dislodged and broken.
In accordance with the main feature of the.
present invention, it is proposed to provide the thermometer with a hanger having spaced resilient arms terminating in hooks to engage the spaced bars or rods of a shelf.
This and other features of the invention will appear from the detailed description and claims when taken with the drawing in which Fig. 1 is a front elevation of a combined thermometer and support of the present invention; Fig. 2 'is a 3 side elevation of the combined thermometer and support of Fig. 1 with the thermometer also in-' dicated in dotted lines in a different position of adjustment; and Fig. 3 is a view of the hanger or support detached from the thermometer.
Referring to the drawing, 5 designates a thermometer of any well-known construction, but as herein shown, it is provided with a metal scale plate 6 having side flanges 1. These flanges at a point above the center of gravity of the thermometer, are provided with an integral ear 8 which ears serve as a mounting for a hanger or support 9 of the thermometer. 9 is pivoted on these cars by means of hollow rivets l0 so that the thermometer can be moved to various positions about a longitudinal axis. This hanger is preferably made of a somewhat resilient strip of metal and is provided with spaced arms II and i2 terminating, respectivethe support, the thermometer is frictionallyheld The hanger ly, in hooks l3 and I4 formedby bending the end i portions of the strip back upon itself until these hooks extend in a direction generally parallel to the arms II and I2. It will be noted that the hooks l3 and. H are provided, respectively, with '5 a rounded portion I 5 and I6 adapted to grip round bars of small crosssection, while the hooks proper are adapted to engage shelf bars R of relv ,atively large rectangularcross-section, Y
When using the combined thermometer and 10 support, the hanger! is sprung until the hooks l3 and I4 pass between the adjacent bars or rods of a shelf. Thereafter the natural resilience of the arms H and I2 causes these hooks to. engage the mentioned rods or bars. Since there 15 is a pivotal connection l0 between the hanger or support 9 and thermometer 5, the thermometermay be moved to various positions of adjustment best suited-to easy reading, of which one position is indicated in full lines-and another 20 in broken lines. It will be appreciated that owing to the friction existing between the cars a of the thermometer and the arms ll and I2. of
in the position to, which it is adjusted.
The present disclosure is given by way of il- 1 lustration and the invention is not to be limited 7 thereby, except as specifically defined in the following claims.
I claim: t 30 1. In combination, athermometer including a backing plate provided with side flanges, and a U-shaped' hanger formed of resilient material and mounted on said sideflanges, the free ends of said hanger terminating in spaced hooks; 35 2; In combination, athermometer including a I 1 backing plate provided with rearwardly proyjecting ears, a U-shaped'hangerhaving its'arms pivoted on said ears, the free ends of said arms 40 having integral hooks.
