Description

Aug. 27, 1935. RQGNERUD 2,012,521
MOBILE APPARATUS FOR BURNINGYAND HEATING PURPOSES Filed May 13, 1935 UNITED STATES OFFl MOBILE APPARATUS FOR BURNING AND HEATING PURPOSES Truls Rognerud, Hunsdalen, near Hen St, Norway Application May 13, 1933, Serial No. 670,981 In Norway February 1, 1933 3 Claims.
This invention relates to improvements in portable burners, particularly adapted for destroying weeds and other noxious plants or surface refuse as for instance required in reforesting 5 operations to prepare the ground for useful growing plants. The principal object of the invention is to provide a device provided with a fuel container which is carried on the back of the operator and is connected by a flexible hose with a manipulating bar which serves as a fuel feed conduit for a of said manipulating bar.
burner attached on one end This manipulating bar has a handle on its other end and is connected near its central part to a flexible member secured to one of the shoulder straps of the device which secures the fuel container to the back of the operator.
In this way the manipulating bar is suspended in front of the operator and can conveniently be manipulated by one hand of the same, the other hand being free to do other work.
Anotherobject of the invention is to provide a device which can conveniently be transported and operated by a. single person and may be used at any accessible location. The flame of the burner is adapted to be applied to the ground at a suitable distance from the operator and the time may be in action for long time intervals without interruption.
These objects are obtained by suspending the manipulating bar from the operator in such a manner that he may manipulate the burner with one hand with- .out exhaustion even after the burner has been in operation for many hours.
that the burner is The bar assures always a suitable distance away from the operator. The manipulating bar may be straight or curved and preferably is suspended adjustably by means of a chain or a strap from one of the shoulder straps of said fuel container holding d evice.
This arrangement is very practical in spo burning as it allows the operator to burn the surface of the ground without assuming an inconvenient position.
The device may be used on any kind of ground which is accessible at all or for burning certain spots as long as the operator is able to find a sufficiently secure footing near the same.
A regulating valve which is placed within the range of the operator's free hand allows a convenient control of the flame.
A suitable form of the device of my invention is illustrated by the accompanying drawing showing the device in action.
In the drawing designates the fuel container the joint 5 to the burner III which is attached 5 to the forwardly extending end of the bar 8. The rearwardly extending end of the bar 6 is provided at a handle. A chain I is fastened with one end to a convenient point on the bar 6, preferably at the central part of the same, and the other end of the chain 1 is attached to one shoulder strap 9 of the device which enables the operator to carry the fuel container on his back. In this-way the manipulating bar 8 with its burner In is freely suspended in front of the operator and need not be carried by his hands.
The effective length of the chain 1 is adjustable in that a suitable link of same can be fastened to a hook 8 on one of the shoulder straps 9 which is connected to a supporting frame of the fuel container I. A manually controllable valve II on the tubular portion of the bar 6 serves for regulating the fuel feed to the burner l0 whereby the flame can be adjusted.
The device described can easily be manipulated by one hand of the operator. With the other hand the operator can adjust the valve H and consequently the size of the flame or this hand may also be used for other work during the burning operation.
I claim:
1. In an apparatus of the class described, the combination with a fuel container, of a tubular manipulating bar having a burner at one end and a handle at the other end, a flexible hose connecting the fuel container with said manipulating bar at a point near the central part thereof, means to enable the fuel container to be fastened to the back of the operator including shoulder straps, a flexible member adapted to be adjustably secured with one end to a portion of a shoulder strap on the front side of theoperator, the other end of said flexible member being attached to the central part of said manipulating bar whereby the latter is suspended in front of said operator, and manually operable means on said manipulating bar for regulating the supply of fuel to the burner.
2. In an apparatus of the class described, the combination with a fuel container, of a manipulating bar having a burner at one end and a handle at the other end, a flexible hose connecting the fuel container with said manipulating bar at a point near its central part, said manipulating bar being tubular from this point 'on toward the burner to form a fuel feed conduit, manually operable means on the tubular portion of the manipulating bar for regulating the feed of fuel to the burner, means to enable the fuel container to be fastened to the back of the operator including shoulder straps, and a flexible member connected with one end to a shoulder strap at a point in front of the operator and with its other end to the central part of said manipulating bar, whereby the latter is suspended from said shoulder strap.
3. In an apparatus of the class described, the combination with a fuel container, of a manipulating bar having a burner at one end and a handle at the other end, a flexible hose connecting the fuel container with said manipulating bar at a point near its central'part, said manipulating bar being tubular from this point on toward the burner to form a fuel feed conduit, manually operable means on the tubular portion of the manipulating bar for regulating the feed of fuel to the burner, means to enable the fuel container to be fastened to the back of the operator including shoulder straps, and a. flexible member connected with one end to a shoulder strap at a point in front of the operator and with its other end to the central part of said manipulating bar whereby the latter is suspended from said shoulder strap, one end of said flexible member being adjustably secured to its point of connection, so that the effective length of said flexible member can be varied.
