Specification of Letters Patent.

To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, CLINTON H. LEGGETT, a citizen of the United States of America, residing in the borough of Manhattan, city, county, and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Powder-Distributers, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to powder distributers and similar apparatus, being especially designed for distributing insect powders on to plants, vines, trees andthe like.
The invention is an improvement upon that set forth in my United States Patent 'No. 950,931, dated March 1, 1910.
In my aforesaid patent the distributing nozzles are normally in front of the person operating the blower, who usually carries the device in front of him. The location of the nozzles in front of the operator has been found objectionable, especially when there is considerable wind, because of the fact that some of the powder is blown or falls upon the operator. The present invention provides a means whereinthe distributing nozzles are located at the rear of the outlet.
Other features of improvement will be pointed out hereinafter.
An embodiment of the invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawings where- 1n- Figure 1 shows a top plan view thereof. Fig. 2 is a side elevation with one of the distributing pipes broken away along the line 1-1 in Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a detailed view showing the support for the distributing pipes, the said support being shown as fastened in place upon the powder magazine or reservoir. Fig. 4 is a detailed view in section of the main powder reservoir and the auxiliary reservoir or magazine.
Referring to the drawings A designates a reservoir or magazine for carrying the powder to be used, which may be for example Paris green or sulfur powder.
B designates a fan or blower which is preferably operated by a crank O.
D designates the crank shaft of a valve in the magazine controlling the passage of the powder from the magazine into the tube E in communication with the blower. The crank shaft D is preferably connected to the mechanism for operating the blower, and is operated simultaneously with the blower.
The device is primarily intended to be carried by the-user, and for this purpose the casing of the blower may be provided with a hook G, adapted to engage a belt worn around the waist of the user, and straps H H, which are attached to the device and are adapted to pass over the shoulders of the user, are also preferably provided.
The general features of the foregoing con= struction are disclosed in my aforesaid atent, and also in my Patents Nos. 511, 81, dated January 2, 1894; 519,720, dated May 15, 1894; 535,113, dated March 5, 1895; 568,776, dated October 6, 1896.
For reasons set forth in my aforesaid Patent No. 950,931 the device is preferably provided with a detachable auxiliary reservoir P. The magazine A is preferably provided at its upper side with a filling openinga. The filling opening is preferably provided with a screw-threaded portion a and is also preferably in the form of inwardly and outwardly facing .funnels a w. The auxiliary magazine P is also preferably provided with a funnel-shaped filling opening 39 adapted to be closed by a suitable closure, and has an open funnel-shaped bottom portion [9 proat and p of the magazines A and P respec- I tively. The filling opening a may also be closed by a suitable cap or closure adapted to engage the threads w. The form of the filling opening a; of the magazine A facilitates the filling and emptying thereof, and
,the form of the bottom portion of the auxiliary magazine P facilitates the emptying of the auxiliary magazine into the magazine A. One or more flat shoulders of are formed upon the top side of the magazine A, for a purpose hereinafter described.
I, I are a plurality, preferably two, distributing pipes, which are preferably formed of sheet metal, and which are connected to the tube E in communication with the blower by means of a branch or Y- coupling J, and flexible tubular portions K, K, rubber hose for example. The hose is preferably wound withwire K to prevent flattening or kinking thereof. The branch coupling J preferably makes a slip-joint with the tube E as indicated at j. The distributing pipes I, I

such as the straps r, 1" adapted to encircle and hold the pipes I, I. The support is preferably laterally adjustable, and for this purpose, the straps 1" r are preferably mounted upon extension pieces 1' 7- which may be held in laterally adjusted positions by means of the wing-nut fastenings 1' 4". By adjusting the extension pieces the distributing pipes may be laterally adjusted to adapt themselves to variously spaced rows of plants or the like. The support R is preferably detachably connected to the device, and preferably to the magazine A. For this purpose the support is preferably provided with a yoke 7' adapted to fit over one of the fiat portions a, of the top of the magazine A and to embrace the magazine. The yoke is preferably faced with rubber r at the points where it comes in contact with the magazine. The support B may also be provided with a saddle 7" adapted to partially embrace the tube E at the lower part of the magazine A. The saddle is preferably faced with leather 1' or the like. The yoke r is preferably formed separate from the bar 1', and the yoke 1' and the bar 1' having the saddle r thereon are preferably fastened upon the magazine A by drawing them together by'means of the screw-blots In order to counteract swinging of the device as the person carrying it walks alon the straps H H are connected to eyes h attached to the corners of the magazine. These eyes it h are conveniently formed by looping the ends of a piece of wire, and

odifications and changes the embodiment illustrated may be made without departing from the spirit of the invention. What I claim is 1 A powder distributer, adapted to be carried by the user, comprising a powder magazine, a blower, and a distributing pipe, said distributing pipe being arranged with its outlet end extending rearwardly, and a support for said distributing pipe comprising a transverselyv extending arm, said support being detachably connected to said device.
2. A powder distributer, adapted to be carried by the user, comprising a powder magazine, a blower, and a distributing pipe, said distributing pipe being arranged with its outlet end extending rearwardly, and a support for said distributing pipe comprising a transversely extending transversely adjustable arm.
3. A powder distributer, adapted to be carried by the user, comprising a powder magazine, a blower, and a distributing pipe, said distributing pipe being arranged with its outlet end extending rearwardly, and a support for said distributing pipe comprising a transversely extending arm, and a yoke adapted to embrace a part of said device,
and means for fastening said yoke in place.
4. A powder distributer, adapted to be carried by the user, comprising a powder magazine, a blower, and a distributing pipe, said distributing pipe being arranged with its outlet end extending rearwardly, and a support for said distributing pipe comprising a transversely extending arm, a yoke adapted-to embrace a part of said device, and means for drawing said yoke and arm together to bind said support in place upon said device.
5. A powder distributer, adapted to be carried by the user, comprising a powder magazine, a blower, and a distributing pipe, said distributing pipe being arranged with its outlet end extending rearwardly, and a support for said distributing pipe comprising a transversely extendlng arm, a
yoke adapted to embrace said powder magazine, and means for drawing said yoke and arm together to bind said support in place upon said device, said arm having a saddle thereon adapted to embrace the lower partof said device.
