.v invention relates to ironing machines having cooperative; rolly and chest parts-and known Such a machine includes as elementary combination of ironing parts, a heated metal chest having an ironing face, and a padded rollr bearing thereupon. The ironing face is of :generally cylindrical characteristics to fit the roll, butthe Achest `has a lip both ahead andbehind thefroll by which the ircning'face is extendedto support `the Work'as the latter enters yand leaves respectively between chest` and'roll. The
'- roll is driven, to bear the work against the ironing face and to cause the work to progress thereover and thus accomplish the ironing operation.
Such an ironing machine usually has more than onepair of cooperative elements as described, but
" this inventionrelates primarily to that pairof roll and chest parts between which the work is first fed. `It has been found that insuch a machine, and particularly where there is a hem on the leading edge of the work, there is a decided tendency of the work to turn under and rollback upon itself,`between the 1011 and chest parts of the ironer. Such malfunction is frequent when handkerchiefs andthe like, which are hemmed all around, are being ironed Aand especially4 when these have narrow rolled hems. In many cases the work is damaged and in some case even the padding of -the ironing roll itself has been damaged. l
y It is the objectof this invention to prevent such malfunctioning, and further objects are to ac-` complish this by simple and inexpensive means. r The exact nature of this invention together with 'further objects and advantages thereof will be apparent from `the following description taken r in' connection-With the accompanying more or Yless conventional drawing, wherein corresponding parts have corresponding referencecharacters, and in which Figs. l and 2 are details in plan and typical'seetional elevation of pertinent parts of an ironing machine in which an embodiment of the invention has been incorporated; Fig. 3 is a view corresponding to Fig. 2 but showing a preferredf form of the invention; Figs. 4, 5 and 6 are details in sectional elevation, front elevation and plan respectively; of another embodiment of the invention; and Fig. 7 is a sectional detail illustrating the characteristics of the malfunction which this invention is designed to overcome.
With reference now to the drawing and rst .to Fig. 7 thereof, l and 2 represent the chest and rollrespectively of an ironing machine. The roll 2 is driven as indicated bythe arrow and the Achest I has a lip part 3 to which the work is fed by ymeans, of `a travellingbelt 4, therusual ngers 5; extending from the belt `to assist in the feeding operation. The position ofthe leading edge of the Work as it contacts with the chest is indicated 'at a. As the work advances over the ironing face of the chest and contacts with the roll, its position is indicated by the dotted line b. At'this instant as indicated at b, the leading edgeonly of thework may be bearing againstthe chest, and tends to stick uponthe ironing surface. The roll, however, engaging the work immediately back of its-leadingedge, forces the work between roll and lll? chest, causing the Work to roll upon itself as indicated at c. As the work progresses the'tendency 'of the chest to drag upon it, plusthe tendency of the roll to advance it, makes the work continue rolling about itsleading edge as at d.
With reference now to Figs. l and 2, the chest la and roll 2a are arranged and related as before, as arel the parts by whichthe work is fed Tonto the lip'of the chest, these parts including the feed belts 4a and ngers 5a. It will be appreciated that vthe chest la islhollow as yindicated, that it may be heated by steam conductedtherethrough; and the roll 2a is driven asindicated by'the arrow, is caused to bear against the polished ironing surface ill of the chest, and isperipherally. padded, all as will be appreciated'by one familiar withthe art. V f f According to this invention I provide a number of members arranged inspaced relation and;` extending over the ironing face ofthe lip 3a, `in
the"directi'on oftravel of the work, up to andE` slightly under the roll 2a..` These members 6 `are secured against travel with the work. They may be of sheetmetal, integral with a frame or backing part 'i which is turneddown over the edge of the li'p 3a, of the chest andthere'secured as by screws 8. By this simplearrangement the members 6 are of course integral with each other as l well as firmly securedwith the chest, the relation of the members 6 being that of teeth in a comb.
`'Ihe free ends of the members 6 extend but The resultis that` the Work vkwill have slight de` formations yextending in the direction of fits' travel, and will bestiffened against rrollingas described in connectionzwith'liig. 7. Also, the leading edge ofthe work will not touch the hotter ironing surface of the ironing 'chest so thatits tendency lto stick will be' materially decreased.
Consequently oncefthe work .touches the roll 2a itwill be moved by the latter, from the members t 6, over the ironing surface I0. of the chest and onto the next chest lzfof the ironing machine.
`With reference now to the preferred modifica- A tion of Fig. vv3 the arrangement is as before except'f that the intermediate parts of the membersibjy areraised somewhat fromfthe lip' 3b of the chest by the simple expedient of making thel frame part 1b with`V which 'the members Bbw-fare integral,
slightly wider.r The'frame partis secured LVwith"` the lip of the chest by screws 8b aslbefore.f.;,.'Ihe.
free extremities 9b `of the-members 621 slightly underliethe roll Zbas beforeandhave feathered*r extremities. vAs compared with `the'arrangement Ycf Figs. 1 and`2, the arrangement offFigS differsY in effect that the spaces between the members 6b'- are'deeper than before,s o' that `the* entire leading edge of the Work is engagedfbyl the roll 2b before itpasses off' the'memb'ers. 6b and .engages the ironing surfacelb. Y." 51...? i' .With "reference now to the-modifications" of Figs.k 4 6, an arrangement is' shown wherein the ironing face of the lip 3cof Ythechestlc is provided with narrow spaced grooves I Ic, the` grooves commencing at V`theendof the ironing facezand extending, in the direction of travel of lthe Work,
upto the roll,2c`, where they terminate. graduallyk vas indicated in Figs. 4 and 6.
It will 'be apparent that so faras concerned, the effect of the arrangement offlr'igs. 4- 6 is substantially theisame as of that of Figsnl and 2; the principal difference being that in thek former case the deformation of thevwork' yis ac complished by means .integrali with vthe chest;
rWhereas in lthe latter case itis accomplished' by separate meansv attached t'orthehest;
What I'claim is: i
