CENTER DRAWER HOUSING FOR PEDESTAL TYPE DESKS Filed Fen,v 1s; 1947' ATTORN EYS.
Patented Sept. 20, 1949 enn'rnn, DRAWER noUslNef Fon] 'PEDEsTAL TYPE masks Y erbert W. Bcutemeier, Cincinnati. Ohio, assign orte The Globe-Wernicke Co.,
a corporation ofohio Application February 18, 1347, Seral'No. 729,362 'y t? Claims, (Cl. 457-1-93) l This invention relates to a'eenter drawerhousing 'for pedestal type. deskjandjhas to do with' certain features of construction whereby the housing is removable. c Y Y The lmofzlern metal' pedestal type desk is made up generally of two pedestals'one or these beine aright and enea left'pedestal and these pedestals are provided on the side, which willbe in the knee hole space with a ner., sjueh desks` may or may not have aF skirt across the knee hole. space on the, side opposite the user, and' a separate top is Iaid. on the pedestals and fastened/tlieretc.'A
Because of 'the fact'that the ycenter drawer housingshave heretofore been permanently secured tothe pedestal walls the pedestals themselves have always4 been unsymmetrieal and' it has alwaysbee'hee'essaiy to provide rights and iefts. Y
Frein the standpoint of production it is desirable that, all pedestals be, the same, gsc that. any two pedestals` can be, usedY together in' a.. desk without regard to winatner they are rights. or Iefts.
It istherefore an objec'tjonxy invention topra-v vide a'construction by which all desk pedestals may be uniform., softhat any pedestal may either be a' right' or a" left pedestal depending upon which side of the pedestal:V the housing for the center drawer is mounted.
It is another object of my uiventi'onto provide a housing as a separate unit whichrnayea'sily'a-nd quickly be, attached tothey pedestal;v
It is a further object of my invention to make the housings in rights and Yhefts `.but to provide the pedestals withl means whereby'either a lefthousingcanY be used* on one'side'thereof, orY arig-ht housing onrtheother side sc that given a pairoi housings (right andleft) and a pair of pedestals (identical) either of the pedestals may be made the right pedestal or left pedestal.
It is a still further object of my invention to provide a construction whereby the housing is caused to hug the pedestal wall tightly so that it will be free of rattles.
These and other objects'of my invention which will be pointed out in more detail hereinafter or which will be apparent to one skilled in the art upon reading these speciiications, I accomplish by that certain construction and arrangement of parts of which I shall now describe an exemplary embodiment.
Reference is made to the drawings forming a part hereof and in which:
Fig. 1 is a front elevation of a. deSk 150 which my invention may be applied.
center rdrawer housing. or run- Y Norwood;A Ohio,
Fig. 2 is ai plan view of thesame with part of the top broken away to show the construction. ljFig. 3 is a fragmentary view` with parts in cross section on the line 3-'3 of Fig. 1 and with the center drawer removed, on an enlarged scale. Y Fig. 4 is-a fragmentary crosssectional view taken*v on the line 4-4- of Fig. 3 on av still larger scale Fig. 5 isafragmentary'perspectiveview of the upper portion of a pedestal.
Fig. 6 is a vpartial perspective viewoi a hanger for a housing.
Briefly in the practice of my invention I mount a conventional drawer housing or runner on a hanger. The housing and hanger together form as a unit, either a rightk hand` housing or left hand housing. The hangers are provided with hook members by means of vwhich they may be removably securedeither to the right hand side y portion I3 as clearly or the left hand side of a pedestal.
Referring moreparti'cularly to the figures, the housing proper, or guide, is indicated at I0. Sincev the particular guide does not' form a part of mv invention, I will not describe" it further. The guide is secured as by spot 'welding toa hanger indicated generally at4 II. The hanger itself, best seen in Fig. 6', has a lower portion l2 to'which thev guide IB is fastened as by spot welding, for example.
The upper' portion of thel hanger is4 bent at a slightV angle tothe portion l2 as' indicated at t3; so, that the portions I2 and l'3 arev not in the 'same plane.V At the upper edge ofthe portion I3 are provided two or more hook members I4, which are bent back to occupy a position substantially parallel to the portion vI 3 and spaced therefroml by thet'hickness of a pedestal wall'.
' Also formed along the` upper edge ofthe portion I3 are one or more wings I-Ewhch arebent in the opposite direction to the hook members I4 to substantially a right angle With respect to the shown in Fig. 6.
The desk itself may be of conventional construction having pedestals I6,which are identical and interchangeable. The deskwill be provided with a top II and may or may not be provided with a skirt I8 across the knee hole portion at the side opposite that on which the user will sit. A center drawer is indicated at I9. The pedestals themselves may be of any desired design or construction, except that if, as is usually the case, the pedestal walls are flanged at the top as indicated at 20, two or more slots 2| will be provided on both walls of the pedestal to accommodate theV hook members I4.
The desk top may be of any desired design or 3 construction and will have usually one or more stiffening channels 22. n
The guide I and its associated hanger II is mounted on a pedestal wall, as best seen in Figs. 3 and 4 by hooking the hook members I4 over the top of the pedestal wall through the slots 2| if that pedestal wall has a top flange. By virtue of the slight angle between portions I2 and I3 of the hanger, together with the fact that the hook member I4 is substantially parallel to the portion I3 and fits tightly over the top of the pedestal wall, the hanger will be urged to hug the pedestal wall closely. This action is further enhanced by the wings I5, which are abutted by the stilening channels 22 when the top is placed on the desk. The desk top bearing on the wings I5 tends to rotate them a small amount in a clockwise direction, as seen in Fig. 4 and this, of course, tends to cause the portions I2 and I3 to be firmly pressed against the pedestal wall with a slight flattening of the angle between the portions I2 and I3. By this construction the housing bears quite tightly against the pedestal wall, so that rattling of the housing is substantially eliminated.
It will be clear to one-skilled in the art that numerous modifications may be made without departing from the spirit of my linvention and I therefore do not intend to limit myself, except as pointed out in the claims which follow.
Having now fully described my invention what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is: Y
1. A center drawer housing for a pedestal type desk, comprising a drawer guide and a hanger therefor, said hanger comprising a metallic strip having at least two hook members along its upper edge by means of which it may be hung over the top edge of a pedestal wall, and said drawer guide being permanently secured to said hanger, said hanger being of a width to space said drawer guide, below the top edge of said pedestal wall to provide clearance for a drawer mounted therein, the portion of said hanger above said drawer guide being disposed at a slight angle to that portion to which said drawer guide is secured, whereby the central portion longitudinally of said strip tends to lie away from the pedestal wall to which it is `removably secured, and means for urging said stripY against said pedestal wall.
2. A device according to claim 1, in which said hook members comprise tongues Yreversely bent with respect to said strip so as to lie parallel to the plane of the upper portion thereof .and spaced therefrom by-the thickness of the pedestal wall.
3. A device according to claim 2, in which there are two hook members, disposed respectively adjacent each end of said strip.
4. A device according to claim 3, in which said strip is provided with a, wing member extending from its upper edge at substantially a right angle in a direction opposite to said hook members, said wing serving as a lever to cause said hanger to hug said pedestal wall when a top is resting onsaid ,desk and bearing on said wing.
5. In combination a desk pedestal and a removable housing for a center drawer, said pedestal being symmetrical side for side, and having at least portions of'both side wall tops exposed for engagement, said removable housing comprising a drawer guide and a hanger therefor, said hanger comprising Ya metallic strip having at least two hook members along its upper edge by means of which it m'ay be hung over the top edge Yof a pedestal wall, and said drawer guide being permanently secured to said hanger, said hanger being of a width to space said drawer guide below the top edge of saidpedestal wall to provide clearancefor a `drawerrmounted therein, the portion of said hanger above said drawer guide being disposedat a slight angle to that portion to whichsaid drawer .is secured, whereby the central portion longitudinally of said strip tends to lie awayfrom the pedestal Wall Vto which it is removably secured, and means for urging said strip against said pedestal wall.
6.1AV structure according Yto claim 5, in which said hookmembers comprise tongues reversely bent with respect to said strip so as to lie parallel to the plane of the upper portion thereof and spaced therefrom Aby the thickness of the pedestal wall. t
