Description

H. PFEIFER Aug. 13, 1935.
CUSPIDOR Filed Sept. 7, 1934 5 Sheets-Sheet 2 I 'rwentor #any Pf6/'Igor' s By @nos Attorney H. PFEIFER Aug. 13, 1935.
CUSPIDOR 3 Sheets-Sheet I5 Filed Sept. 7, 1954 Atto'mey Patented Aug. 13, 1935 UNITED sr'rss PATENT QFFICE 2 Claims.
This invention appertains to new and useful improvements in receptacles such as are employed as cuspidors, the principal object of the invention ybeing to provide a cuspidor which'is both sanitary and convenientJ to use.
Another important object of the invention is to provide a cuspidor which requres a minimum amount of space to occupy.
Another important object of the invention is to provide a cuspidor which is normally closed and which will present a neat and attractive appearance from the outside.
These and various other important objects and advantages of the invention will become apparent to the reader of the following specification.
In the drawings:
Figure 1 is a front elevational View of the device.
Figure 2 is a side elevational View of the receptacle.
Figure 3 is a vertical sectional View through the structure.
Figure 4 is a bottom plan view of the cuspidor.
Figure 5 is a horizontal sectional View taken substantially on line 5 5 of Figure 3.
Figure 6 is a vertical sectional view through a modified form of cuspidor.
Figure 7 is a horizontal sectional View taken substantially on line '1 -I of Figure 6. Y
Figure 8 is an end elevational view of the con duit section.
Referring to the drawings wherein like numerals designate like parts, it can be seen in Figures 1 to 5 inclusive that the type of cuspidor employed is primarily intended for automobiles and railway rolling stock, that is, where the refuse is permitted to dump onto the street or railway trackage Without collecting this refuse as in the home or oiiice type shown in Figure 6.
, By referring to Figures 1v to 5 inclusive, it can be seen that the cuspidor consists of a tubular upright conduit 5 having a flared bottom portion 6 which is adapted to be disposed over an opening through which the refuse is to be discharged.
'Ihe head portion of this structure consists of an inclined back wall 1 provided with a flange 8 around the perimeter thereof, said'flange having openings 9 therein for receiving suitable securing elements. The wall 'l is provided with a side wall IIJ at opposite sides thereof and with a bottom wall II. The bottom wall has a depending annulus I2 for receiving the upper end of the conduit section E, while hingedly connected as at I3 is the bowl Ill having a bit l5 in its upper portion engageable by the spring detent I6 carried by the upper portion of the back Wall l. The hinge I3 has the spring Il associated therewith for`l throwing the bowl I4 to an open position when the detent I5 is released. A spring clip I8 is provided on the inside of the back Wall structure 'I for supporting a cake of disinfecting substance I9.
The hinged portion of the bowl I4 is provided with a tongue 26 which substantially closes the upper end of the conduit 5 if the bowl I4 is moved to open position. f
The head portion of the cuspidor is the same in Figures 6 to 7 inclusive, the change being that the conduit 5a is provided at its lower end with trunnions lia-lia which engage into thebayonet slots 20a of the neck portion 2l at the top of the container 22.
In this form of the invention, the container 22 collects the refuse and obviously by giving the conduit 5a a quarter turn onvthe neck 2l, the head portion and conduit can be removed fromy the receptacle 22 so that the receptacle can be easily emptied.
While the foregoing specification sets forth the invention in specific terms, it is to be understood that numerous changes in the shape, size, and materials may be resorted to yWithout departing from the spirit and scope of the invention as claimed hereinafter.
Having described the invention, what is claimed as newvis:
1. A cuspidor comprising a base portion having an upstanding tubular conduit, a back wall at the top of the conduit, and a swingable bowl mounted at the lower portion of the said Wall and being swingable to close against the said back Wall and over the upper end of the conduit, and a tongue carried by the swingable bowl and adapted to close said conduit when the boWl is in open position.
2. A cuspidor comprising a base portion having an upstanding tubular conduit, a back wall at the top of the conduit, a swingable bowl mounted at the lower portion of the said wall and being swingable to close against the said back wall and over the upper end of the conduit, and spring means for throwing` the said bowl to an open position.
