- 2. Description of the Related Art
- Generally, a dishwasher is an apparatus to enable sanitary and efficient washing of dishes, and functions to wash dirty dishes and dry the washed dishes.
- Such a dishwasher adopts a drying method in which an interior temperature of the dishwasher is raised during washing and rinsing via a rise in water temperature to facilitate evaporation of water present on dishes and to remove water vapor evaporated from the dishes via condensation in a cooling duct or using a dehumidifying material.

For example, the controller may increase the number of a washing or rinsing operation if the pollution level is high, and may decrease the number of a washing or rinsing operation if the pollution level is low. - A
drain pump 35 anddrain pipe 36 may be installed at one side of thesump 30 to discharge the polluted wash water out of thedishwasher 1. - The
door 40 may be pivotally rotatably coupled to thecase 10 to open or close the front side of thewash tub 20. A variety of electric elements and thecirculation duct 100 may be mounted in an interior space of thedoor 40. - Hereinafter, the
circulation duct 100 anddehumidifying material 130 will be described in detail. -
FIG. 2A is a perspective view illustrating the circulation duct within the door, andFIG. 2B is an exploded perspective view illustrating the dehumidifying material separated from the door. - As illustrated in
FIGS. 2A and 2B , thedoor 40 internally accommodates thecirculation duct 100 such that thecirculation duct 100 communicates with thewash tub 20 for air circulation. - The
circulation duct 100 includes aninlet 110 through which interior air of thewash tub 20 is introduced, anoutlet 140 through which the interior air of thewash tub 20 having circulated in thecirculation duct 100 is discharged, and a flow-path portion 120 connected between theinlet 110 and theoutlet 140 to enable air circulation. - The
inlet 110 is located at a relatively upper position of thedoor 40, and acirculation fan 112 is provided inside theinlet 110 to draw and circulate the interior air of thewash tub 20. Thecirculation fan 112 is rotated by a motor (not shown) to forcibly draw the interior air of thewash tub 20 into thecirculation duct 100. - The flow-
path portion 120 connected to theinlet 110 extends from the top to the bottom of thedoor 40 to allow the air to move along a flow-path defined therein. The flow-path portion 120 includes awater intercepting portion 123 inclined upward from around theinlet 110. Thewater intercepting portion 123 having an inclination serves to prevent water from entering the interior of thecirculation duct 100 even if water of thewash tub 20 is introduced into theinlet 110. If water enters the interior of thecirculation duct 100, thedehumidifying material 130 may absorb the water, thus having considerable deterioration in drying performance. Accordingly, thewater intercepting portion 123 serves to prevent deterioration in performance of thedehumidifying material 130. - The
circulation duct 100 includes adehumidifying material receptacle 122 into which thedehumidifying material 130 is centrally fitted, and adehumidifying material cover 124 to cover thedehumidifying material receptacle 122. Once thedehumidifying material 130 to remove moisture is fitted into thedehumidifying material receptacle 122, thedehumidifying material 130 is covered with thedehumidifying material cover 124. - The
dehumidifying material 130 has excellent hygroscopicity to absorb moisture contained in the air moving in thecirculation duct 100. Thedehumidifying material 130 may be selected from among zeolite, active carbon, super absorbent polymer, porous fiber, and the like. Zeolite is hydrated aluminum silicate mineral with alkali and alkali-earth metals, and is colorless transparent or white semi-transparent. Active carbon is an adsorbent having strong adsorption and mainly consisting of carbon materials, and is used to adsorb gas or moisture. Super absorbent polymer is a resin to absorb water as much as several tens to several hundreds times the weight thereof. Since active carbon itself sucks up water, it absorbs a greater amount of water than absorbent cotton or cotton fabric and does not discharge water under the influence of a moderate pressure. - The
dehumidifying material 130 has a shape suitable to be fitted into thedehumidifying material receptacle 122. In the embodiment of the present invention, thedehumidifying material 130 has a rectangular shape. Thedehumidifying material 130 anddehumidifying material receptacle 122 may have various shapes including, e.g., circular and square shapes, and are not limited to the rectangular shape. In addition, thedehumidifying material 130 may have various sizes, and a plurality ofdehumidifying materials 130 may be fitted into the singledehumidifying material receptacle 122. - The
dehumidifying material 130 takes the form of a cartridge to allow a user to easily exchange thedehumidifying material 130. Thus, the user may easily attach or detach thedehumidifying material 130 to or from thedehumidifying material receptacle 122 of thedoor 40. - The
dehumidifying material cover 124 covers thedehumidifying material 130 to isolate thedehumidifying material 130 from the interior of thewash tub 20. Thedehumidifying material cover 124 constitutes a part of an inner wall of thedoor 40, and the user may easily attach or detach thedehumidifying material cover 124 to or from thedoor 40 by inserting his/her finger(s) into acover recess 126. - A
moisture content display 135 is provided at an outer surface of thedoor 40 to inform the user of a moisture content degree of the dehumidifying material 130 (seeFIG. 1 ). Thus, the user may exchange thedehumidifying material 130 when thedehumidifying material 130 has a high moisture content degree. - Hereinafter, a drying operation of the
dishwasher 1 will be described. -
FIG. 3 is a block diagram illustrating a drying principle of the dishwasher. - As illustrated in
FIG. 3 , if thedishwasher 1 completes a washing operation, the interior air of thewash tub 20 and dishes received in thewash tub 20 contain a great quantity of moisture. Then, if a drying operation begins, thecirculation fan 112 is operated, causing the interior air of thewash tub 20 to be introduced into theinlet 110 of thecirculation duct 100 and then, after moving through the flow-path portion 120, to be again introduced into thewash tub 20 through theoutlet 140. That is, the air continuously circulates through thewash tub 20 andcirculation duct 100. During the air circulation, thedehumidifying material 130 placed in the flow-path portion 120 absorbs moisture contained in the air. - The moisture content degree of the
dehumidifying material 130 is represented on themoisture content display 135. If themoisture content display 135 informs that the moisture content degree of thedehumidifying material 130 reaches a level that necessitates exchange of thedehumidifying material 130, the user may exchange thedehumidifying material 130 with another dehumidifying material, i.e. previously dried dehumidifying material. - To exchange the
dehumidifying material 130, the user first opens thedoor 40 and pulls thedehumidifying material cover 124 from thedoor 40 in a direction designated by the arrow “A” by inserting his/her finger(s) into thecover recess 126 of thedehumidifying material cover 124. After taking out the saturateddehumidifying material 130 and putting the previously drieddehumidifying material 130 into thedehumidifying material receptacle 122, the user closes thedehumidifying material cover 124, completing exchange of thedehumidifying material 130. - Drying of the saturated
dehumidifying material 130 may be accomplished using various methods. For example, the saturated dehumidifying material may be subjected to natural drying using sunlight or wind, or may be dried using a drying appliance, such as a microwave oven. In addition, if thedehumidifying material 130 is contaminated by dirt, thedehumidifying material 130 may be washed using detergent, etc. In this case, thedehumidifying material 130 separated from thedoor 40 may assure very easy washing, differently from a conventional dehumidifying material permanently attached inside thedishwasher 1. - As described above, when the
dehumidifying material 130 is detachably provided within thedishwasher 1, separation and washing of the contaminateddehumidifying material 130 may be possible, enhancing the overall sanitation of thedishwasher 1. Further, theclean dehumidifying material 130 indirectly has the effects of enhancing the drying performance of thedishwasher 1 and reducing unnecessary energy consumption. Furthermore, since a heater to dry thedehumidifying material 130 is unnecessary, thedishwasher 1 may have reduced manufacturing costs and simplified configuration. - Hereinafter, a
dishwasher 2 according to another embodiment will be described. A description related to the same configuration as thedishwasher 1 according to the above described embodiment will be omitted. -
FIG. 4A is a rear perspective view illustrating the dishwasher according to another embodiment, andFIG. 4B is a view illustrating exchange of the dehumidifying material. - As illustrated in
FIGS. 4A and 4B , in thedishwasher 2 according to the present embodiment, acirculation duct 300 is attached to a side surface of awash tub 220 in a space between thewash tub 220 and acase 210, rather than being mounted within adoor 240. In the same manner as thecirculation duct 100 of the above described embodiment, thecirculation duct 300 includes aninlet 310, flow-path portion 320 andoutlet 340. Theinlet 310 is located on the top of thewash tub 220, theoutlet 340 is located on the side surface of thewash tub 220, and acirculation fan 312 for air circulation is located adjacent to theoutlet 340. - A
dehumidifying material receptacle 322 is provided at the center of the side surface of thewash tub 220, and adehumidifying material 330 is detachably attached through the space between thewash tub 220 and thecase 210. Specifically, thedehumidifying material 330 may be fitted into or separated from thedehumidifying material receptacle 322 through adehumidifying material hole 323 perforated in thecase 210 to communicate with the space between thewash tub 220 and thecase 210. After exchange of thedehumidifying material 330 is completed, thedehumidifying material hole 323 is covered with adehumidifying material cover 324. Thedehumidifying material cover 324 has acover recess 326 to assure easy handling of thedehumidifying material cover 324. - Other configurations of the
dishwasher 2 are identical to those of thedishwasher 1 according to the above described embodiment. - As is apparent from the above description, a dishwasher according to an embodiment of the present invention adopts a detachable dehumidifying material, to separate the dehumidifying material for washing and drying thereof.
- Thoroughly washing the dehumidifying material may enhance the overall sanitation of the dishwasher.
- Further, washing the dehumidifying material may effectively reduce energy consumption as compared to heating the dehumidifying material.
- The washed dehumidifying material is perfectly free from dirt residue, achieving enhancement in drying performance.
- Furthermore, eliminating a need for a heater used to dry the dehumidifying material may reduce manufacturing costs of the dishwasher and also, may simplify the entire configuration of the dishwasher.
- Although a few embodiments have been shown and described, it would be appreciated by those skilled in the art that changes may be made in these embodiments without departing from the principles and spirit of the invention, the scope of which is defined in the claims and their equivalents.
