UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
HENRY HAWKINS AND MARY HAWKINS, OF SEDALIA, MISSOURI.
IMPROVEMENT IN MEDICAL COMPOUNDS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 201,010, dated March 5, 1878; application filed October 16, 1877.
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that we, HENRY HAWKINS, and MARY HAWKINS, of Sedalia, in the county of Pettis and State of Missouri, have inventeda new and useful Compound, which compound is fully described in the following specification.
This invention relates to that class of com- 7 positions used as medicine both internally and externally; and consists of the ingredients hereinafter named, and in substantially the proportions mentioned.
To prepare the compound, take one (1) quart of alcohol, one and ahalf (1%) ounce of chloroform, two (2) ounces tincture of capsicum, onefourth (i) ounce of tincture of aconite-root, five-eighths g) of an ounce of oil of sassafras, one-eighth (g) ofan ounce of oil of winter-green, three-fourths g) of an ounce of gum-camphor, three-fourths (i of an ounce of sweet spirits of niter, one-eighth (g) of a dram of oil of cajeput, one-eighth (g-) of a dram of oil of origanum, and two drops of dissolved aniline, or sufficient to give the desired color.
This may be applied externally as a liniment, or taken in sweetened water in doses of from ten drops to a tea-spoonful, according to the urgency of the symptoms. For toothache, cotton may be saturated and placed in the tooth, and for wounds or sprains the bandages may be wet with it.
