Description

N. FRETZ. Nipple-Guard for Fire-Arms.
No 200,999. Patented March 5; I878.
llllll'lllllllllll =E N PETERSA FHOTO-LITHOGHAFHER, WASHINGTQN. D. I
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
NATHAN FRETZ, OF CENTRE POINT, INDIANA.
IMPROVEMENT IN NIPPLE-GUARDS FOR FIRE-ARMS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 200,999, dated March 5, 1878; application filed October 29, 1877.
It; all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, NATHAN FRET-Z, of Centre Point, in the county of Clay and State of Indiana, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Guards for Gun- Locks or other Fire-Arms, the same being intended to guard the cap and thus prevent accidental discharge, of which the following is a specification:
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a side view of part of a gun, with my improvement attached. Fig. 2 is a reverse View of the inside of the lock, removed from the stock. Figs. 3, 4, and 5 are detached views.
My invention consists of a novel construction of guard, in combination with the lock of a gun, pistol, or other fire-arm, as will be fully understood by the following specification.
My improvement may be applied to guns or pistols of ordinary construction, as shown in the accompanying drawings, in which- A represents the gun-stock, ora part thereof; and B, a side view of the gun-lock, with the cock 0 down upon the nipple or cap in Fig. 1, and drawn back or cooked in Fig. 2. But it is not necessary to describe the ordinary parts in detail.
On the side of the stock A, in Fig. 1, is shown my improved cap-guard at G, held in place upon the stock by the pivot D. The upper part of guard embraces the nipple or cap, and thus receives the stroke of the hammer or trigger, completely guarding the cap. This guard is operated by means of a piv-. oted trigger, E, and sliding plate F, in connection with another plate, H, fastened to the stock by means of screws I and K. The plate H has attached thereto a spring, L, which works on the rod M, and the sliding plate F has a lug, f, which bears upon the spring. By this arrangement the guard G is pressed home upon the nipple, but by pulling upon the trigger E the guard is moved away from the nipple, as shown in dotted lines, Fig. 1. As the guard is thus drawn back, the nipple and cap are free, and at the same motion the hand moves the real trigger and snaps the same in the usual way.
I do not make any claim to the main look, as shown in the drawings; but
What I claim, andrdesire to secure by Letters Patent, is
The sliding plate F and spring L, in combination with the pivoted guard G and trigger E, substantially as set forth.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
NATHAN FRE'IZ. Witnesses:
ISRAEL KRY'rzER, WILLIAM MURBARGAR.
