SAFETY LOCKING DEVICE FOR HOOKS Filed July 5, 1934 Patented July 30, 1935 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE SAFETY LOCKING DEVICE FOR HOOKS Lester W. Manbeck, Lewistown, Pa. Application July 3, 1934, Serial No. 733,641
4 Claims.
This invention relates to a safety locking device for hooks, and it is an object of the inven: tion to provide a device of this kind which can be readily and conveniently applied to any standard hook.
Another object of the invention is to provide a device of this kind which when in applied position effectively operates to prevent accidental separation of the hook from its work and also to provide a device of this kind which may be easily applied to the hook or removed therefrom. e
The invention consists in the details of construction and in the combination and arrangement of the several parts of my improved safety locking device for hooks whereby certain important advantages are attained and the device rendered simpler, less expensive and otherwise'more convenient and advantageous for use, as will be hereinafter more fully set forth.
The novel features of my invention will hereinafter be definitely claimed.
In order that my invention may be the better understood, I will now proceed to describe the same with reference to the accompanying drawing, wherein:-
Figure 1 is a view in side elevation of a safety device constructed in accordance with an embodiment of my invention and in applied position, the associated work engaged with the hook being shown in section;
Figure 2 is a sectional view on the line 22 of Figure 1;
Figure 3 is a view in elevation of one of the members comprised in my improved safety looking device as herein set forth;
Figure 4 is a view in elevation from the inner side of the second member or plate comprised in the device as herein set forth.
As disclosed in the accompanying drawing, H denotes a standard or conventional type of hook with which is adapted to be employed a safety locking. device constructed in accordance with an embodiment of my invention. My improved device as herein disclosed comprises two members A and B. The member A comprises in its structure the body portion I which is insertable within the hook H from a side thereof, said member being substantially cylindrical in form and of a major diameter in excess of the space between the taken substantially .outer portion of the bill 2 and the shank 3 of the be engaged, said work being herein disclosed as a rmg. One side of the body member I has extending therearound from opposite sides of the notch 4 an outstanding flange 5, said flange increasing in width from opposite sides of the notch 4 to a point substantially diametrically opposed thereto, said flange at opposite sides of the notch 4 being substantially flush with the periphery of the body portion I. The flange 5 provides a stop to limit the extent of insertion of the body portion I laterally through the hook H so that when the second member or plate B is engaged with the opposite end of the body portion I the device is effectively held against accidental displacement or removal with respect to the hook H.
The member or plate B when appliedis concentric to the flange 5 and has in a marginal portion thereof a notch or recess 6 for registry periphery of the body portion I for coaction with the adjacent side of the hook H to prevent retraction of the body portion I after being placed through the hook H.
Extending from the inner face ofthe member B eccentric to the'axial center thereof but at substantially the transverse center of the notch 4 is an elongated pin I welded or otherwise secured to the member B. This pin 1 is of a length to freely extend through the body portion I and project a distance therebeyond. The body portion I is provided therethrough' with an opening 8 eccentric to the axial center of the body portion I but at substantially-the transverse center of the notch 4 and throughwhich the pin I is inserted. With the body portion I placed within the hook H and after the pin I has been directed through the opening 8 of the member A a retaining ring 9 or the like is inserted through an opening In in the extended end portion of the pin I to hold said pin I against withdrawal from applied or working position. However, when the ring or member 9 is removed the member B may be readily separated from'the member A to eifect aconvenient and quick removal of my improved safetylocking device.
The periphery of the body portion I at a desired point intermediate its ends aas determined by the notch or recess 4 is provided thereacross with an outstanding lug II. This lug I I, when the device is in applied position, has contact with thebill 2 or the shank 3 of:the hook whereby the extent of rotation of the applied device is inserted'through the hook for holding positively limited so as to prevent the notches or recesses 4 and 6 to register with the space between the outer end portion of the bill 2 and the shank 3 which would permit separation of the work W from the hook H and which separation it is the purpose of my improved device to prevent.
In practice the work W is engaged with the hook H whereupon my improved safety locking device is applied to the hook with the work received within the notches or recesses 4 and '6. My improved device as herein disclosed when applied is allowed to have limited oscillation within the hook and this is of. advantage when the hook is employed with heavy work, suchas inconnection with a crane or the like, as such oscillating movement will allow certain freedom of the work with respect to the hookH to faci1i-' tate the desired operations of the crane.
The shank 3 as herein disclosed has disposed through its outer portion adjacent a margin thereof a member [2 having eyes H5 at its extremities. To one of these eyes M is attached a chain I 5 or kindred fiexible member of desired length and which member has its opposite .or outer end portion se'cured to the peripheral portion of the member-B, saidimember B being provided-therethrough with a suitably located opening 16 to'facilitate such connection.
'The secondeye l i has secured thereto an end portion of the elongated chain or flexible member 11 which has its outer end portion connected to the peripheral portion of the flange 5 of the member -A, said fiange having therethrough an opening [8 tofacilitate such connection. Connected to-the "chain or member ll intermediate its ends is the extremity of a third chainv or flexible member l9 which has its opposite or outer extremity suitably connected, as at 29, to the retaining ring 9. The chains or flexible members 15, and 19 are provided .to prevent misplacement-or loss-of the'members A3and B and ring 9,
it being understood of course that suchechains or flexible members are of a length sufficient to offer no hindrance orobstruotionto the-desired manipulations of the members lA:andB and the ring 9 in either a'pplying the device 'to the :hook
or removing the device therefrom,
- From the .foregoing description 'it 'is. thought to 'be obvious that asa fety locking 'device' for hooks constructed inaccordance with my invention is particularly well adapted. for use by reason 'of the convenience and'facility with'w'hich .it may be assembled and operated, and it will'also :be
obvious that my invention is susceptible of some change and modification without departing from theprinciples-and spirit thereof-an'd'for thisreason I do not wish to be -understood as limiting myself to the precise arrangement and 1 formation of the several parts herein shownin carrying out my invention'in practice except as hereinafter claimed.
