This invention relates to an automatically operable mechanical thermostatically controlled structure adapted for association with a flue, stove pipe or chimney for regulating the draft 5 and at the same time taking care of and relieving the system of dangerous coal gases.
In the art to which the invention appertains, we find numerous types and styles of dampers and check draftdevices. As a general rule the most commonplace type is a flat disk or plate pivotally mounted at diametrically opposite points and adapted. to swing from a horizontal to vertical position to function either as a cut oil or a regulating valve for the draft. By way of contrast, one feature of the present invention is predicated upon a new form or kind of damper expressly designed for trapping coal gases and concentrating and releasing the gases to pass upwardly through the smoke stack or pipe into the chimney.
The chief feature of the invention which serves to accomplish the result I seek to attain is the association with said damper of a door which serves to allow air to be drawn in by the natural suction in order to propel the coal gases upwardly into the chimney and thereby to relieve the system of dangerous and obnoxious odors and gases.
This damper and associated door arrangement while separate mechanical features are associated collectively and operable in unison so that each part is detailed to perform its proportionate and appointed share in accomplishing the desired result, whereby to allow the damper to serve in its usual capacity and to further serve in conjunction with the obnoxious gas control door.
Other features and advantages will become more readily apparent from the following description and in the accompanying illustrative drawing.

Figure 4 is a fragmentary detail sectional and elevational View showing the adjustment means.
By way of introduction, it is to be pointed out that the invention is of a combination type in that it embodies a draft control or check device which serves as a damper, and further includes a complementary hinged'door cooperating with an opening in the pipe and operating in unison with the damper to take care'ofand re lieve the system of obnoxious and dangerous gases. It is to be further pointed out thatthe damper as well as the door is controlled by mechemical means connectible with temperature actuated thermostatic means (not shown) Therefore the description will be directed primarily to the particular construction and arrangement of the damper and its associated door arrangement.
It is understood that the invention is primarily adapted for association with a stove pipe, smoke stack, or the like connectible with a chimney (not shown). The pipe section is denoted in the drawing by the numeral 8. On the interior thereof is the raft check device generally referred to as the damper. This is denoted by the numeral 9. As shown in the drawing, it is of frusto-conical form. This provides a truncated apex which defines a discharge orifice or port H3 through which the coal gases pass upwardly into the chimney. On the lower edge portion and at the front is an enlargement l i which constitutes a counterweight and tends to swing the damper downfrom its level horizontal or closing position. Then, as shown in Figure 4, the damper is provided at diametrically opposite points with bearings which receive short stub axles or trunnions l3 as shown in Figure 3, these being rockably mounted for oscillation in bearing holes in the pipe section B. The numerals l4 merely designate set screws for attaching the shafts it to the damper. Thus, we have very much the conventional type of damper with the exception that it is conical and formed with a weight H, detachably mounted on the rocker shafts l3 and provided with an orifice or port so to relieve and take care of the discharge of coal gas. In Figure l, the numeral l5 designates a rocker arm and a wire or equivalent element I6 is attached to' this arm and at its opposite end is attached to a thermostatic control device (not shown) which serves to control the damper according to the heat conditions existing in the system. So far as the matter of thermostatic control is concerned, it is immaterial. It is the particular construction of the damper which is important. It may be said however, that the left hand rocker shaft l3 as shown in Figure 3 has an adjustable connection l! which allows the position of the damper to be controlled so that it will respond with requisite accuracy.
I next call attention to the coal gas relief means and by referring to Figure 1 it will be observed that a principal part thereof may be designated as a suitable mounting frame [8. This frame is of any appropriate construction and attached to the pipe section around a square opening which is formed in the pipe section. This frame serves to permit a rectangular plate l9 to be hingedly mounted thereon as at 2B. The plate is, in a sense, a valve or door which serves to let air in above the truncated apex of the damper. The door contacts the marginal portion of the frame when closed, said door being closed at the time the damper is open or substantially open. Or stated otherwise, when the damper is closed, the door i9 is open to relieve the coal gases. 7
By preference, the door is provided with an operating bar 2| suitably fastened thereto and there is an actuating arm 22 adjustably connected as at 23 to the outer end of this bar. The arm 22 'is provided with a loop 24- which is adjustably connected with the nut-equipped threaded end portion 25 of the operating link 26. The link 26 is pivotally connected to the rocker arm I5 and therefore operates in conjunction with said rocker arm. The control of the door is adjusted through.
the instrumentality of the nuts and threads and the arm 22 as well as its adjustable connection 23 with the bar 2|. Hence, adequate means is provided here to provide the necessary attributes for adjustment. Moreover, the adoption and allocation of a frame and the fiat door is believed to be more satisfactory as a fresh air inlet valve than would be the case if the valve were made arcuate to correspond in contour to the cylindrical shape of the pipe section 8. That is to say, the frame l8 and its flat rectangular door is is believed to be a novel and dependable means for controlling the intake of air to assist the discharge of dangerous coal gas. Although it is of no particular moment, it will be observed in Figure 1 that the numeral 21 designates a vent designed to overcome the presence of vacuum in the pipe section.
In taking into consideration the features and advantages which accrue from the combination of structure illustrated, it will be at once apparent that although the damper 9 is separate, it is collectively usable with the air intake valve or door l9. Thus these features operate in unison and each is detailed to perform its proportionate and appointed share in accomplishing the desired successive result, whereby the door i9 does not alter or materially effect the operation of the damper but the damper, when closed, cooperates with the door 19, which is then open, to take care of and discharge undesirable coal gas.
It is thought that persons skilled in the art to which the invention relates will be able to obtain a clear understanding of the invention after considering the description in connection with the drawing. Therefore, a more lengthy description is regarded as unnecessary.
Minor changes in shape, size, and rearrangement of details coming within the. field of invention claimed may be resorted to in actual practice, if desired.
What is claimed is:
In a structure of the class described, comprising a pipe section having an air inlet opening therein, a pivotally mounted closure for said air inlet opening, a pivotally mounted damper in said pipe section, said damper being mounted on a rod, one end thereof projecting beyond said pipe section, an arm adjustably mounted on said rod, an arm pivotally and adjustably mounted on said closure, the upper portion of said arm being provided with a longitudinal slot therein, a link having one end pivotally connected to the arm on said rod, the other end being adjustably secured in said longitudinally extending slot of the other arm.
