Description
E. WILSON. Spring-Back for Vehicle-Seats.
No. 200,960. Patented March 5,1878.
WITNESSES UNITED STATES PATENT ()FFICE.
EBENEZER WILSON, OF OTTO, NEW YORK.
' IMPROVEMENT IN SPRING-BACKS FOR VEHICLE-SEATS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 200,960, dated March 5, 1878; application filed October 6, 1877.
To allwhom it may concern:
Be it known that I, EBENEZER WlLsoN, of Otto, in the county of Oattaraugus and State offlew York, have invented a new and Improved Spring Back for Vehicle- Seats, of which the following is a specification:
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 represents a side elevation, and Fig. 2 a rear elevation, of my improved spring-back for carriage-seats.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts.
This invention relates to an improved springback for carriage'seats that may be conveniently adjusted as to height and tension of the supporting-springs; and it consists of a second back, supported on adjustable side springarms, and on C-shaped rear springs, that admit, on being turned, the raising or lowering of the back.
In the drawings, A represents a seat for buggies and other vehicles, which is provided at both sides with sheet metal plates A, screwed to the sides of the seat.
The plates A support, on posts B and O, the side spring-arms D, that carry on their inwardly-bent rear ends the back E.
The front ends of the side arms D are bent into U shape, and the bent ends made to slide in the fixed front posts B, being adjustable therein and firmly clamped by set-screws a. The rear posts 0 are adjustable in slots b of plates A, whereby the springs formed by the side arms are weakened or stiffened according as the posts are moved forward or back.
The adjustment of the side arms in the w front posts lengthens or shortens the springs formed by the side arms, and increases or decreases the strength of the same in conjunction with the movable rear posts 0.
The back E is further supported on C- shaped springs F, that are secured by screwnuts at their lower arms to brackets or rests d of the fixed back of the seat, while the threaded upper arms screw into the lower part of the upper or second back E. The C- springs serve to raise or lower the back by being screwed out of or into the back, the joint movement of both springs being necessary to raise or lower the back. The C- springs act in conjunction with the side-arm springs, so as to give perfect accommodation to the occupants of the seat whenever they lean back against the spring-back.
The tension of the side springs and the position of the back may be conveniently regulated as required by the party using it.
The spring-back forms a comfortable attachment to buggy and wagon seats of all kinds.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- 1. A spring-back for vehicle-seats, consisting of a second back supported on adjustable side spring-arms and C-shaped rear springs, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
2. The combination of seat A, having fixed front posts and adjustable rear posts, with the side spring-arms D and second back E, the side spring-arms being made adjustable in the posts to regulate tension of side spring-arms, substantially as specified.
3. The combination of the second back with the adjustable side spring-arms and the C- shaped rear springs that rest on brackets of the seat, and turn by their threaded upper arms into the back, to regulate the height of the same, substantially as set forth.
EBENEZER WILSON.
