IMPROVEMENT IN TABLE-LEAF SUPPORTS.

Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 200,954, dated March 5, 1878 application led May 4, 1877.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, GEORGE T. WALLACE, of Manseld, in the county of Richland and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Table-Leaf Supports; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, and in Which- Figure l is a side elevation of my device attached to a table, and Fig. 2 is an inverted plan view of the same.

Similar letters of reference indicate like parts in the several figures.

My invention has for its object to provide an improved support for table-leaves; and it consists, essentially, in the novel arrangement of a brace, a slotted or notched guide, and a spring, said brace being pivoted at one end to the table-rail in such manner that its opposite end moves freely in the guide which isa-ttached to the table-leaf, and adapted to catch into the slot in said guide for holding the table-leaf in a horizontal` direction, all as will be hereinafter more fully described, and pointed out in the claim.

Referring to the drawings, A represents the metallic brace or arm, pivoted or hinged at one end to the support B, attached to the table-rail, as shown. C represents the metallic slotted guide or way attached to the under side of the table-leaf, and providedavith a slot, H, at its inner end. At the upper end of the brace or arm A is pivoted a catch or key, E,

which slides in the open groove of the guide C, and is adapted to catch or drop into the slot H, to hold the table-leaf in a horizontal position when desired.

D represents a spring attached to the under side of the table-leaf, and which is adapted to force the catch E into the slot H.

The construction of my invention being as already described, it will be observed that as the table-leaf is raised the catch E on the arm A slides in the guide C until the said catch drops into the slot H, thereby holding the table-leaf in a horizontal position, the catch E being held in place bymeans of the spring D. To lower the leaf the hand is passed underneath, and sufficient pressiue exerted upon the upper end of the brace to overcome the resistance of the spring, thereby releasing the catch E, and allowing the leaf to descend by its own weight.

I am aware of the patent granted to C. H. Rohde, under date of March 13, 1877, and numbered 188,414, and hereby disclaim the construction shown therein.

What I claim as new and useful is The combination of the pivoted brace A, having the pivoted catch E, with the slotted guide C, provided with the notch or slot H and spring D, the several parts being constructed, arranged, and combined to operate substantially as and for the purpose described.
