1 Claim.
My invention relates to an improvement in window locking devices, and my object in general is to provide a simple device of inexpensive construction adapted to lock a pair of slidable window sashes together when in fully closed position.
A more specific object is to provide a device of this kind which cannot be surreptitiously unlocked from the outside by a person breaking or cutting an opening in the glass adjacent the lock through which the lock may be reached.
As constructed the device includes two separate members, one adapted to be readily mounted upon the meeting rail of the lower window sash and the other upon one of the side rails of the upper sash. Pivotally connected to the member which may be readily mounted upon the upper sash is a locking hook adapted for cooperative locking engagement with the other of said members, means being provided for rendering the disengagement or unlocking of said hook difficult, if not impossible from the outside.

The locking device comprises a latch member I and a bolt carrying member 2 respectively mounted upon the horizontal meeting rail 3 of lower sliding sash 4, and the vertical side rail 5 of the upper sliding sash 6 of a window 1.
Member I consists of a base part 8 secured to the rail 3 by means of screws or other suitable fastening means 9. A dome shaped bolt receiving member ll) is rotatably mounted upon and for slight vertical movement away from and toward the base. To this end member I0 is provided with a centrally disposed depending headed pin II which passes loosely through an opening l2 in the raised portion l3 of the base, a coil spring l4 bearing at opposite ends against the head l5 of the ,pin and the bottom of the raised portion l3, resiliently resists movement of the member ID in a vertical direction away from the base.
The member 2 comprises a strap hinge IS the upper arm I! of which is secured to the vertical rail 5 previously referred to by means of screws 8, while the lower arm I!) of the hinge rests upon the meeting rail 3, also previously mentioned, when the window 1 is closed, it being noted that members 1 and 2 are respectively located adjacent the upper and lower right hand corners of the sashes 4 and 5. A hook shaped bolt 20, pivotally secured at its inner end to the arm I9 of hinge l6, by means of a pivot pin 26 is provided at its outer hooked end with an upturned lip 2|, adapted to be snugly inserted through a small slot or cut out portion 22 in the rim of dome shaped member ill, when the latter is pulled upwardly against the tension of spring l4. When the member I0 is released spring l4 pulls the former back into engagement with the base 8, and withdrawal of the hook bolt will be prevented in an obvious manner, by the lip 2|.
In order to make unlocking more difficult a locking finger 23 is pivotally mounted upon the hinge pin 24 in position to normally prevent movement of the hook bolt in an anti-clockwise direction. A star wheel 21 mounted on the hookbolt pivot pin 26, is provided with. a plurality of star points or fingers 28, which overlie the looking finger and prevent its being elevated out of the path of movement of the hook bolt. However when the wheel 21 is rotated to bring a single point or finger 29 int-o register with a notch 30 in the locking finger, the latter can be swung upwardly on its pivot from behind the hook bolt, thus permitting the device to be unlocked. When the lock is not in use, the arm l9 of strap hinge l5 together with the hook bolt 20 and locking finger 23, may be swung upwardly against and parallel with the arm ll, thus permitting opening or closing of either window sash. The parts can be locked in the folded position just described by swinging the hook bolt on its pivot into frictional engagement with a resilient locking lip 3|.
Assuming an attempt is made to unlock the device from the outside by a person reaching through an opening in one of the window sashes, it will be noted that this can only be successfully accomplished with the greatest difiiculty, if at all. Both hands must be employed, one to elevate member ID and the other to manipulate star wheel 21, elevate locking finger 23 and finally to move the hook bolt out of its locking engagement with member II]. This will be practically impossible due to the location of the device, and the difliculty of observing the relationship of the various co-related parts.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim is:
A locking device for slidable window sashes comprising a pair of cooperating locking members secured to said window sashes and movable therewith, one ofsaid members embodying a strap hinge havingits one arm secured to the respective sash and its other arm pivotally supporting a locking hook, the other of said members embodying slotted means adapted to interlock with said locking hook, a notched locking arm for said locking hook hinged to prevent pivotal movement of said hook, when interlocked with said slotted means, and a rotatable star Wheel having one of its points fitting the notched portion of said locking arm adapted to hold said arm in locking engagement with said hook and permit release of said locking arm in predeter- 10
